Emily in Paris Season 5 Review
It’s another year and another season of Emily in Paris has been released, with nothing new happening, and our protagonist STILL repeating the same old toxic cycles that she usually does. Joining her in the toxicity this season is her best friend, Mindy, who has now been roped into this unending men madness for some reason.
Emily in Paris‘s universe exists for the beautiful locations, the clothes and this notion that women are constantly dating without breaks and monkey branching from one person to another. Every woman in this series finds herself unable to stop and take a break for a moment, focusing on their own career and life without finding themselves confused about which man to date. It’s exhausting watching everyone do this in one way or another, from Emily herself to even Sylie.

The series finds itself progressively more lost as the years have gone on, and I feel like it’s turned into this show that doesn’t know what it’s doing and fills the runtime with childish drama that could be solved with one conversation. It’s soulless and derivative, with nothing that showcases Emily’s progress or makes us root for her. She dates the same, makes the same decisions and finds herself in easily avoidable disasters of her own creation. It’s so messy that it’s hard to believe that this is an adult; half of the time, I wondered whether Emily is supposed to be a teenager.
We are five seasons deep, and Emily’s life is no better now than it was years ago when she first moved to Paris. She’s still immature, thoughtless and jumps to conclusions far too early for her own good. From season 1, she has been facing emotional and professional hardships, and as the series ends this year, she’s nowhere near having sorted at least something out in her life. I won’t just blame Emily here – we have been seeing most of these characters for at least two seasons, if not more, and all of them are just as immature and insufferable.

The storyline this season is more of the same. There’s a work mishap, and Emily has to prove herself; she’s confused about the man she’s dating and makes a fool of herself in that aspect as well. The others exist to either fawn over her or validate her feelings, or to think about whom to date next. It’s just so surface-level and unserious that you wonder who the target audience is.
Every minute of the story has some conflict that is solved in the next minute. Things happen and are magically solved by Emily just wishing them to go away and pouting. People fall for her, fall for each other, fall for others and then come back in an exhausting and unending loop, and it just doesn’t seem like there’s any depth to anyone or anything.

However, I will give it to the series – even with all of its flaws, it’s very easy to binge. At 30 minutes per episode and the series pushing something to happen around every corner, you can’t help but be invested, regardless of how dumb things feel. You watch Emily in these gorgeous places, surrounded by beautiful people and wearing the most chic clothes, and, for a second, you get lost in this magical place where the most difficult thing is to wonder which of these hot men is your soulmate. It’s honestly sort of oddly calming because you mostly keep your brain off to get the best experience.
Final Thoughts

Emily in Paris Season 5 ends where it started years ago and leaves us with many questions that I am too scared to ask. Will there be another season where Emily stumbles around wondering whom to date? Possibly. But sometimes it’s nice to turn your brain off and watch absurd romance stories.
