-Shrinking Episode 2 Recap Contains Spoilers-
Shrinking Episode 2 starts with Jimmy catching a glimpse of his daughter, Alice, and mistaking it for her late wife amidst the rays of sunshine (a reference made in the last episode). Moreover, we also get to see the duo finally having some sort of conversation, and awkwardly discussing the trajectory of their routine.
Determined to reconnect with her daughter and be more present in her life, Jimmy attends her school meeting. However, upon arriving, he finds that his neighbour, Liz, is already there, and realizes that she knows more about Alice’s subjects and interests than he does. This realization highlights the distance that has developed between Jimmy and Alice due to his grief and preoccupation with coping mechanisms.
In addition to his struggles with his daughter, we also see Paul trying to help Alice in his own way. He is hesitant to let Jimmy know about their secret supportive group meetings because he fears that Jimmy’s emotional state will make the interactions awkward and uncomfortable. Something which Paul finds completely futile.
As the episode progresses, we see Alice agreeing to have dinner together in an attempt to reconnect with his father. She even brings the wings for the both of them but Jimmy ultimately has to skip the dinner due to an unexpected reconnection.
This time around, it is with his longtime best friend, whom he had ghosted for a year. This scene highlights Jimmy’s inability to fully commit to and focus on rebuilding his relationship with his daughter, as he is still preoccupied with his own grief and the people from his past.

Throughout the episode, we also see Liz’s role in Alice’s life. Presumably, right after the death of Jimmy’s wife, she became a maternal figure for Alice and was determined to be there for her. However, as she starts to realize that she needs to give the father-and-daughter duo some space, her motherly instincts make her emotional.
Furthermore, during her interaction with Gaby, we get to see her emotional outburst which highlights her sacrifices for Alice. She further highlights Gaby’s taunt before the tragic event, and what impact it had on her.
The episode ends with Jimmy’s confrontation about forced optimism, and the reason behind his absence in the life of his friends and family. He mentions his then desire to not get over the feelings, and let it all out once and for all. Even though it might have been longer than usual, there is no time limit on grief.
