5 Shows to Watch on 4th of July to Send You In the Patriotic Spirit: TURN Washington Spies, Veep and More

American Independence Day is coming soon, and that means fueling the patriotic spirit by watching movies and TV shows that showcase exactly that. The following shows to watch on 4th of July feature elements that include the government systems or the real lives of the people who live in this country. There are many shows that highlight the law and the crime happening in the country, but the ones mentioned in the list below are specifically curated to give you a feeling of the country strongly.

Some of these comedies satire the system and call out the inaccuracies, but some of these are serious with some action that sets the tone we look for in serious dramas. If this holiday is a time of chilling, why not chill with things that keep the spirit alive but also give you the entertainment you deserve? Without any further ado, here are some of the shows that emulate this vibe.

Shows to Watch on 4th of July

Space Force

While this is something that actually exists in the country, this show tries to satirise the setting and bring some personal stories into this. Following a military officer who has been made head of this arm of the government has things to do but has been stopped by bureaucracy. It does such a brilliant job of exploring how there is an inherent hierarchy within this well-regulated system, and how people can be cheated if the wrong people rise to power. Additionally, it also looks at the obsession of the American government with Space and makes fun of it by being entirely self-aware.

Starring Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz and others, Space Force is currently streaming on Netflix.

One Day at a Time

Following a Latinx family of four people, this series explores what it is like to be in a family with a veteran, coming to terms with identity in a country where half the people don’t accept you and how to continuously be a better person for this country by engaging in the democratic process meaningfully. Apart from being informative, this show is also incredibly emotional and hearty. It joins formal information with tools of storytelling to tell important stories that everyone should know.

Starring Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz and others, One Day at a Time is currently streaming on Netflix.

TURN: Washington Spies

If you’re looking for something nostalgic, this series will take you all the back. Since it came out in the early 2010s, the writing has been incredibly dramatic and includes some seriously close calls, romance, action and spectacle. There is a lot of tension that is built throughout the episodes in order to keep the pace going. Based in the year 1778, the period drama vibe is incredibly strong with the filming and the dialogue, but it also gives viewers the opportunity to see what the spy system was like at the time.

Starring Jamie Bell, Seth Numrich, Daniel Henshall and others, TURN Washington Spies is currently streaming on AMC+.

Patriot Act

Learning about the nitty gritty of a system is so tedious. However, the host of this show, Hasan Minhaj, tries to condense all the important information into a 30-minute package. Occasionally providing an update on the older episodes, most of the time, he explores new problems and phenomena in America through a mostly non-biased lens. However, what makes this series so interesting to watch is the comedy which is hilarious but always respectful of the people it speaks about.

This semi-documentary comedy show focuses on talking about things most media houses weren’t covering at the time. Patriot Act is currently streaming on Netflix.

Veep

Exploring the way the government system work, this show features a Vice President of the United States who wants to become the President. However, because of the way the system is set up, she never gets a chance, but she is able to be the second in command. It shows the people working behind the scenes, the ones who make everything function in the office. But it also shows how being a public figure almost always means swallowing your words and going by someone else’s rulebook. Adding comedy and drama to it, the cynicism of the series becomes the linchpin for hilarity.

Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale, Reid Scott and others, Veep is currently streaming on HBO Max or JioCinema (India).
