Should I Marry a Murderer Review: A Chilling Love Story and a Moral Nightmare

Should I Marry a Murderer Review: This thrilling true-crime series thrives on shocking audiences after enveloping us in a warm and intimate hug. The limited docuseries is based on the headline-grabbing case and showcases the love, trust and, ultimately, betrayal that Caroline Muirhead faced. It’s more than just a retelling of a crime story; it’s an unsettling reminder that we don’t really know those we trust.

Plot & premise

The series follows forensic pathologist Caroline Muirhead, whose fairytale romance with Scottish farmer Alexander “Sandy” McKellar turns from magical to horrifying when he suddenly confesses to her that he had been involved in a murder. Along with his brother Robert, Sandy had been involved in a hit-and-run accident of 63-year-old Tony Parsons on the A82.

Although the red flags were glaring at first, Caroline had chosen to ignore them in lieu of their electric chemistry. But when the truth came out, she decided to work with the authorities to gather evidence against her fiancé instead of walking away. While the central narrative has been a topic of discussion in mainstream media, the documentary does a great job of consolidating the evidence and giving Caroline the chance to tell the story from her own mouth.

What works

The best part about this true crime show is its perspective. Caroline’s unique perspective and the way she narrates the series are absolutely terrifying. The tension builds constantly, and viewers will feel her unease and fear, as well as the emotions bursting out. We are made acutely aware of how she feels for Sandy, but also the moral obligation that is weighing her down as well. This perspective, the push and pull of her emotions and her heartbreak at having to do the unthinkable, gives the series its emotional weight and roots viewers in it.

The storytelling is tight and bingeable as a result, and it’s hard to stop watching. There isn’t any unnecessary padding, thanks to the tight episode length, and the tension that builds through Caroline’s retelling can be cut with a knife. It’s not about what happened, since that’s quite apparent, but how long Caroline can put up the act and gather evidence. The ethical dilemma is also one that will make viewers sit up and take notice, and make the show gripping and deeply uncomfortable.

The best part about Should I Marry a Murderer is that its focus is solely on Caroline and doesn’t veer from her at any point. Although it might feel a bit repetitive sometimes, the way she presents her feelings and the sequence of events are nothing short of terrifying, and viewers will be able to go on this emotional rollercoaster ride with her thanks to the director’s active efforts.

What doesn’t work

There are some dramatic moments in the series that take away from the rawness of Caroline’s emotions and retelling. There are long sequences where we see a dramatic retelling of the story that sometimes doesn’t sit well. Some moments also feel a bit too engineered instead of organic. Plus, there is a lack of context from anyone other than Caroline, so if you’re looking for a broader perspective, that is missing.

Final Thoughts

This is a psychological study wrapped in a real-life thriller than seperates this true crime documentary from others. With a story that feels straight out of a horror movie and the escalating tension, Should I Marry a Murderer is for every true crime fan who wants something bingeable. It’s gripping, disturbing and emotionally complex, constantly making viewers wonder about the moral implications of the situation.

Although it doesn’t dig as deep as it should, the docuseries explores human relationships along with the crime quite well, leaving a mark long after the credits roll.
