Apple TV+’s psychological thriller series Imperfect Women showcases two friends desperately trying to figure out who killed their third friend, but they must face their own hard realities as a result. We peel back layers of secrets and betrayals as they must confront how broken they all are to find the truth and peace. It’s a complex story of obsession and manipulation, as they end up committing some grave sins along the way, while learning the darker realities of their own lives.
What happens in the story?
At the centre of the story is Nancy, whose sudden murder triggers some shocking truths to come out that everyone has been trying to hide for so long. We immediately learn that Eleanor has been infatuated with Nancy’s husband, Robert, all her life. It’s a secret that all three friends have known, and Nancy’s death pulls the two close, resulting in them sleeping with one another. It leaves everyone shattered, including Nancy’s daughter, who blasts Eleanor online, resulting in Robert refusing to see her to benefit his family.
As the emotional boundaries blur between Eleanor and Robert, Mary starts to come unwound and spirals into destructive habits, increasingly relying on Adderall as the investigation into Nancy’s death consumes her.
Who was Nancy’s affair partner?
The identity of Nancy’s affair partner is one of the biggest talking points of the series throughout, and the biggest mystery as well.
In a shocking twist, we learn that Nancy’s affair partner was none other than Mary’s husband, Howard. He has been seeing Nancy after taking advantage of her vulnerability during a difficult time in her marriage. They got close during a ballet recital’s rehearsal and ended up sleeping with one another behind everyone’s backs. However, when things with Robert solved themselves, she immediately broke it off with Howard, realising the errors in her ways.
This, however, sets the stage for the series’ tragic outcome.
What is Howard’s truth?
As it turns out, Howard has been the central antagonist all along, with a history of abuse and manipulation.
First, he lied to Mary, painting his ex-wife, Jenny, as a derranged woman who refused to leave him, while presenting himself as a calm and supportive partner. In actuality, Jenny was a level-headed woman who left Howard after learning about his affair with Mary, his then TA. He had apparently been sleeping with all of his co-eds, but this broke the camel’s back for her.
However, when Jenny rejected him, he was unable to accept it and, at first, begged her to come back – promising to break it off with a pregnant Mary and leave their child behind to be with her. But when that didn’t work, he pushed her down the stairs, leaving a nasty scar. Throughout their lives, Howard has been manipulating Mary and taking advantage of her, dominating her into submission and chipping away at her morale. Thus, it reveals a nasty side to the seemingly ordinary and sweet professor, revealing him to be a monster.
Throughout the series, he continues to manipulate Mary emotionally, slowly eroding her confidence and controlling her.
How did Nancy die?
Nancy’s death, as it is ultimately revealed, is a result of Howard’s violent outburst.
Nancy died at Howard’s hands after Howard was unable to accept her rejection. Jenny’s words ring true as it becomes clear that he has a jealous and obsessive streak to him that doesn’t let him accept that anyone would leave him. Moreover, it appears that he has always had a thing for Nancy because he forced Mary to role-play the Hennessys with him. In the end, he shoved her against a pillar under a deserted bridge, which ended her life instantly, and then left her there.
The act confirms Howard’s obsession with being in control and his dangerous nature – something we had seen glimpses of throughout the episodes.
What happens in the end?
In the end, Howard’s truth is revealed after he is proven to be an abuser in court during his custody hearing with Mary, which sends him over the edge. He abducts Mary and almost kills her for revealing his real identity to the world, but thankfully, Eleanor saves her. The police eventually arrest him and use Scott, Nancy’s childhood abuser, as an eyewitness.
What happens to Mary and Eleanor?
In the aftermath, Eleanor opens up her heart and seems to be having a peaceful celebration with her family, while Mary celebrates her daughter’s birthday in peace. Even Robert and Cora are there beside her. The show reinforces its central theme throughout that people are rarely as perfect as they appear. There are cracks everywhere; one has to spend some time and look deeply to find them.
What does the ending mean?
The ending reinforces its central theme and title: no one is truly perfect. Beneath the surface of the perfect lives that we see outwardly, everyone is hiding secrets, insecurities and emotional scars. The series’s main motivation is to highlight how unresolved trauma can have disastrous results and how denial is never an option. To heal such wounds, one has to take the path of truth and confront their fears to finally have a free and happy life.
The series, thus, is more a drama about understanding human nature and its shortcomings rather than solving a murder.
