Shanty Town Season 2: Has Netflix Renewed the Crime-Riddled Drama Series?

While this show came out just a few days ago, there is already some hype for Shanty Town season 2. The series stars Ini Edo, Chidi Mokeme, Nancy Isime, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Peter Okoye and Richard Mofe-Damijo, among other cast members. The series has six episodes, each ranging from 30-45 minutes. It is created by Xavier Ighorodje and directed by Dimeji Ajibola.

Netflix description of the series reads, “A group of courtesans attempts to escape the grasp of a notorious kingpin – but political corruption and blood ties make freedom a near-impossible goal.” The show focuses on a group of prostitutes trying to flee Shanty Town, widely known for the sex work and supply of prostitutes. Heading them is a handler named Scar.

The show takes the violence and portrayal of women in the sex industry too seriously, edging towards barbarism. It tries to attempt to showcase accurate stories of people who work in the industry and are too often not allowed to leave. While it may not have such a big following here, many people are rallying for the show to come back for a second season.

Will There Be a Shanty Town Season 2?

In the last season, we saw Inem’s twin sister Amanda go undercover at Scar’s crib to get information that would incriminate him enough to send him to jail. In doing so, a new can of worms opened, including the governor’s elections and a new rival gang making its appearance in the fold.

After the context has been set up, the show guides us towards the character Shalewa who needs to pay an exorbitant amount of money to get out of the job. While she couldn’t make that much money by herself, Scar offers another way she can make up for all the money that she won’t be able to return.

In the end, the newly appointed governor is taken to jail for his untoward and predatory behaviour towards sex workers. At the same time, Scar was stabbed multiple times in his own home, Ene has also been taken to prison, Shalewa will soon plan to escape her life in Shanty Town, and Amanda is back in the fold being an undercover agent.

The end brings up many questions, like what happened to Scar? What is Amanda doing now? Did Shalewa ever leave the town to go elsewhere? What will happen to Femi, the governor’s son? All of these questions were left unanswered in the current season, which is why fans demand that there be a new season detailing the aftermath of such a power-packed ending.

Additionally, we never find out what happens to the rival gang’s leader. She was seen speaking to the government agents like they were comfortable with each other. If so, that opens up something interesting about the politics in Shanty Town and the depth of corruption happening there.

Like many people who saw the show, the end card left some room for the expansion of the Shanty Town universe. Maybe the next season could show Ene taking back control and making an organisation better run than Scar’s. Or better yet, since Scar’s body was never found, it is quite possible that he may still be alive, recuperating and strategising a way to come back to Shanty Town with better resources.

Chief Fernandez, who became governor, is also currently in jail, but a man with that kind of access cannot be in there too long. Especially considering the level of corruption, the show has highlighted in the town. For the next season, we can see how Chief Fernandez will come back, possibly team up with Scar and take back Shanty Town as a cash cow and as an expression of power.

Amanda could possibly come back to fight this thing out in the open since everyone knows that she took up her sister’s identity to do better for the women working at Scar’s place. As of now, Netflix or the creators haven’t confirmed anything. The interest in the storyline and this new kind of filmmaking in Nollywood will probably hint at a second season for the show.

The show is currently streaming on Netflix. What do you hope Shanty Town Season 2 explores? Let us know in the comments below.
