Shantaram Episode 12 Review: Predictable and Disappointing Finale

Shantaram Episode 12 concludes the first season of the drama series on a disheartening note and leaves Lin’s trajectory inside a vacuum. The recent instalment is titled All the Way From There Just to Get to Here and has a runtime of fifty minutes. Moreover, the episode is directed by Ian B MacDonald and has teleplay from Steve Lightfoot and Ken Kristensen.

The complete cast of the series includes Charlie Hunnam as Lindsay Ford, Alexander Siddig as Abdel Khader Khan, Shubham Saraf as Prabhu, Luke Pasqualino as Maurizio, Elektra Kilbey as Lisa Carter, Alyy Khan as Qasim Ali, Matthew Joseph as Ravi, Sujaya Dasgupta as Kavita, Antonia Desplat as Karla, and Fayssal Bazzi as Abdullah Taheri.

-Shantaram Episode 12 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

The final episode of the first season starts with a light chatter between Lin and Prabhu after the latter rescues him from the hands of officer Nightingale. Furthermore, the philosophical convict makes a near escape from the detective and still manages to convince Prabhu, that they need to find Karla.

Moreover, Sagarwada breaks into a gang war, when Kavita publishes a story on the trade deal. And invites trouble for the editor, Nishant. The news, itself leads to a domino effect and shakes the very foundation of the criminal empire. Thereby endangering all the characters of the story.

Prabhu, Didier, and Lin discover Madham Zhou’s kidnappings and make a conscious decision to save Karla and Lisa. In the process, they wind up with Maurizio’s money and decide to take the matter into their own hands.

From this brief intro, the episode feels like a constantly moving piece of the puzzle, that finally forms the shape. However, when you actually look into it (from the perspective of a regular viewer), it’s just a plain mess. A trend, that eventually became quite predictable towards the end of the series.

Throughout the season, I had an ample amount of hope for the series, to course correct itself. But with this finale episode, they have only repeated the mundane trajectory and made things even more frustrating. Notably, with the season done and dusted, I can easily compare the setup to a ticking time bomb, that just never goes off.

The biggest strength of the show has been the mettle of the actors. Especially, Shubham Saraf and Charlie Hunnam, who have curated a genuine and engaging arc of friendship. The subtle exchange of finale goodbyes, between the two, was one of the most touching and emotional moment of the series. However, it’s a shame, that such character potential didn’t live up to its expectation.

Shantaram Finale only tops the mediocre drama genre and fails to reach for excellence. Furthermore, the classic cliffhanger towards the end doesn’t compensate for the rest of the show, even if it means a possibility of another season.
