Shadow and Bone Season 1 Recap
To start off, one of the major concepts of Shadow and Bone is the existence of the Shadow Fold that splits the country Ravka where the story is set. This Fold is the one responsible for all the chaos and complicated relations Ravka has with all the surrounding nations and more. It uses its First Army (real soldiers) and Second Army (Grishas- people who wield the small science, much like magic and have special abilities). Now, Grishas are really not accepted in society and Ravka is their place to be.
The story centres around a young mapmaker Alina Starkov, who belongs to the First Army. She is stationed along with her childhood friend and tracker Mal Oretsev. However, Mal is soon destined to cross the Fold and, Alina pulls some stunt to get on the ship with Mal to make the cross together. But on entering the Fold, the dark creatures start attacking everyone on the ship, which is when Alina lets go off a burst of light, saving as many people as possible.
Thus, when the ship makes it through the Fold, to the other side, she is rushed to the leader of Grisha- General Kirigan aka the Darkling, for his ability to control darkness. Although every child is tested for Grisha powers when young, Alina showed no abilities. But, the Darkling believes that she is The Sun Summoner- the legendary figure in the Grisha world that can destroy the Fold. Due to this, Alina is taken to the Little Palace and kept there for a while to get training to be able to use her powers to destroy the Fold.

While in training, Alina makes friends and enemies. She learns about the rare things called amplifiers that can be used to make a Grisha more powerful than they are. Alina’s training is harsh and her teacher says that she is unable to achieve her full potential as she is waiting for Mal who does not respond to her letter. Alina learns to let go and makes progress as she also interacts more with the Darkling and gets drawn to him. We learn that it was Kirigan’s ancestor who created the Fold to begin with.
However, unknown to Alina, Mal has been trying to contact her and takes up the mission to find Morozova’s stag, an amplifier that can be used by Alina. He finds the Stag and heads to inform the Darkling. This also means he would get to see Alina. At the Winter Fete, Kirigan shows off Alina’s strong powers and also meets Mal, who does not reveal the location of the stag until he sees Alina. But, there is a murder attempt on Mal from Alina’s teacher which causes him to escape.
Baghra, Alina’s teacher, then contacts Alina directly and finally reveals to her that she is the mother of Kirigan and, Kirigan is the Black Heretic who create the Fold and now wants to use Alina’s powers for him. This causes Alina to escape. Entering the scene at this point is the Crows- Kaz Brekker, Jesper and Inej, who are there to kidnap the Sun Summoner. The Crows’ storyline works side by side in the series and this is the moment where the two inter lap and, we see that Alina is trapped in the trunk by Jesper where the former thinks she is escaping.
Alina refuses to travel with them and Kaz and Jesper are unable to catch her with Inej letting her go, believing that she is the saint. Alina’s escape from the Crows reunites her with Mal and they set on the journey to find the Morozova’s stag. On finding the stag, Alina lets it go, only for Kirigan to kill it by showing up. The two fight Kirigan which injures Mal. Kirigan makes a collar from the Stag’s antlers for himself and Alina, which allows him to control her power too.

Kirigan agrees to help Mal if Alina tags along with him in his plan. He takes her across the Fold as Mal sneaks on the ship and the Crows too, all sharing the same idea to kill Kirigan. As a battle enrages between all, Alina manages to separate the amplifier from the Darkling’s hold. Soon enough, Kirigan is carried away by a volcra in the Fold, leaving the rest as sole survivors. Everyone parts to their respective ways with Alina and Mal in hiding and the Crows on yet another mission.
