-Servant Season 4 Episode 9 Recap Contains Spoilers-

Sean and Julian are currently MIA because of their grave injuries thanks to Leanne’s mojo. Now, Dorothy is alone with her nanny and she is afraid beyond reproach. Jericho is also there with her and she has been trying her best to keep him as close as possible. There is now abject fear that she will hurt her family members in an instant without feeling any remorse.

Dorothy is trying to contact her brother and husband but the first time, the call doesn’t go through. She tries again and this time she does get Sean on the call, who lets her know that Tobe will be coming and leaving some fruits and a basket full of her favourite things outside the house. Leanne sees that Dorothy has been feeling afraid without Sean and Julian in the house so she offers to keep watch and stay in the room.

The next morning, Dorothy finds a basket but there is no one outside. She opens the card to find that there is a message from Julian and Sean telling her to meet her behind the road construction. Dorothy is now steeled in her effort to make sure Leanne does not get a whiff of her plans to go outside. While the nanny definitely knows that Dorothy can do anything to get out of the house, she is surprised to find that her employer would still think these tactics work.

However, Dorothy is smarter than that. She takes a chance and asks Leanne to take care of Jericho while she takes a pill and sleeps because of her bad back. Leanne is surprised by this olive branch of trust and doesn’t look at the gift horse in the mouth. After Leanne leaves the room, Dorothy struggles to get to the ground floor and make her way outside in the pouring rain and storm.

She finds Julian and Sean both in the car, asleep. They wake up when she knocks on the windows and quickly lets her in. This is the moment the audience has been waiting for. The point where the story becomes all too clear. Sean and Julian are ready to tell Dorothy the truth about last year and Jericho. They didn’t have to do much, just reminded her of some of the things that happened last year and the way she was absolutely catatonic after Jericho’s supposed death.

After Dorothy remembers everything and comes to terms with the truth, we see her absolutely lash out. A violent torrent of anger, sadness and helplessness. She is recalling everything that happened with her and Jericho and violently attacks the car windows, Sean and Julian before getting out of the car. The two men take to her and comfort her with strong pressured embraces. They take her back inside where Leanne has already figured out that Dorothy left home to speak to her.

Sean and Julian, thinking they have the upper hand, tell Leanne that they don’t need her anymore. Dorothy knows the truth now and there is nothing she can do to change that. The problem is Sean and Julian think she is just some random deranged human instead of the supernatural force that everyone thinks she is. Leanne is soothingly speaking to Dorothy about how she can bring back Jericho for good and it will just be the two of them. But before Dorothy can say anything, the episode ends.

Servant Season 4 Episode 9 Review

This episode finally revealed the truth to Dorothy to see what happens when she finally finds out about the truth. To be fair, while her reaction initially felt anti-climactic, the simmering depth of feeling it conveyed was fun. Additionally, Lauren Ambrose needs to be nominated for all the Emmys because every micro-emotion is clear on her face. You can feel like she really believes in what is on the page because her face is a reflective surface for all of it.

Speaking of the episode, the cliffhanger is once again beautifully set up because the story could go either way, and there is only one episode left in the entire series. At this point, it is getting scary that they may actually drop the ball when it comes to the finale. While most endings feel expansive and blown out of proportion, this show is starting to get claustrophobic. It might not be explosive, but definitely implosive. Fingers crossed for a satisfying finale.
