Secrets We Keep Review
As we start off with Secrets We Keep, we are made painfully aware that something is up with all of the men around Cecilie. Everyone seems to be hiding something, and there’s just something off about them. Of course, all that becomes apparent as the episodes move on and more skeletons fall out of the closet. If you liked Netflix’s Adolescence, you will enjoy this one as well.
And, oh boy, do they fall. The series’ 30-minute per episode runtime is perfect for the subject matter to make an impact, so much so that I was hooked on every scene. The series does a great job of not introducing anything unnecessary and rather sticking to what’s necessary and leaves such a deep impact that it will give you goosebumps.

It follows Cecelia’s desperation to learn what happened to her neighbour’s au pair after she suddenly vanishes, and it’s apparent that something is not right with her neighbours. The Secrets We Keep does a fantastic job of showcasing the different sides to this story, even the policewoman Alicia is used extremely well. She doesn’t seem lacking in any aspect, which is shocking, but her insights and her drive to see this case through matter both from her job perspective and emotionally.
The series gets to the point from the start, and you’re immediately hooked on the story. Although you do get an inkling about what happened to Ruby and who could’ve done it, the series introduces several twists and turns that make sense in the grand scheme of things and make you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for a resolution. The last scene is extremely brutal and will leave viewers stunned.

The characters, too, I found extremely enjoyable. Everyone has enough backstory for us to understand their characters, but it’s not overdone. I think Cecilie is a great protagonist, and her drive to do the right thing will motivate you to keep watching. On the other hand, the neighbours, including Katarina, Rasmus and their son Oscar, are so skeevy that they will make your skin crawl, but it’s difficult at first to understand what exactly is wrong with this whole ordeal. Of course, we know what’s later, but that’s not a discussion for right now.

Another point of the story is the au pair themselves, or rather, the workers who come from overseas to find better jobs outside of their countries. Angel’s story and that of others is such a sad reality for hundreds of people from South and South East Asia that the heartbreak never seems to go away. The series adds nuance to this, but makes a bold statement when it has to. I particularly liked how Alicia tearfully tells her colleague that she has to see this through because no one else cares about Ruby. Another heartbreaking scene is between Angel and Cecilia in Secrets We Keep episode 6, which showcases how clueless even the best of people can be.
Final Thoughts

With fantastic performances and a short runtime, Secrets We Keep is extremely watchable and enjoyable. This Danish series should be on your radar if you like mystery thrillers, more so if you’re in the mood for something short, quick and arresting. The cinematography, the score and everything about it are top-tier, and it deftly portrays some very important topics that need more discussion.

Not dutch, danish.
