Sakamoto Days Episode 1 Recap

Once upon a time, Sakamoto was a highly skilled and fearsome hitman, someone who might even remind you of John Wick. Like John Wick, Sakamoto found love, started a family, and decided to leave his violent past behind for a peaceful life. But what happens when someone, whether an old ally or a vengeful rival, threatens to shatter that hard-won tranquillity? The answer is simple: nothing good for whoever tries.

Sakamoto’s former partner, Shin, a sharp-witted esper and hitman, is ordered by their old boss to eliminate Sakamoto. The mission is straightforward: bring Sakamoto back to the world of crime, or kill him if he refuses. On the surface, Sakamoto seems to be an easy target. He’s gained weight, his glory days seem behind him, and his current life revolves around running a convenience store. But is that really all there is to him now?

Has Sakamoto truly left his lethal skills behind to become an ordinary, middle-aged man who enjoys ramen and does odd jobs in his neighbourhood? Or is there more to him than meets the eye? You’ll have to watch the first episode of Sakamoto Days to uncover the truth.

Today’s episode was again filled with thrill and some heartfelt moments. Right off the bat, we can see that Shin has become pretty comfortable. In his new role as a convenience store clerk, not only is he adept at helping other customers, but because of his mind-reading qualities, he can pinpoint what a customer wants and lead them to that aisle. He also gets to know about the very important Sakamoto family rule. If Sakamoto ever decides not to follow these rules, his wife will surely divorce him, and he’s deathly scared of that promise.

Later, Shin and Sakamoto go to get some pork buns, but that’s where they land themselves in another major problem. Lu, the daughter of a mafia family, runs into them, roping them into her family issues. You see, her family kept their treasures hidden in a chamber, and the key to it was left in the hands of Lu. Now, it is up to her to protect it with her life. But the people behind her are very powerful, and they will stop at nothing to have the key.

They also appoint 2 assassin brothers to pursue Lu and kill whoever is assisting her. These two are pretty unhinged as they relish cutting their victim’s head off and then drawing it. But, they come face-to-face with Sakamoto, and it is definitely not a sad thing on Sakamoto’s part.

The best part of this episode is the fight where we see just how broken Sakamoto is. He truly is one of the best, and it is a good thing for other assassins that he retired. But I preferred the part where we look at the past of Sakamoto and know the reason behind Sakamoto’s family’s rule. This segment humanizes the ex-assassin and showcases how much he cares about his family.

I loved today’s episode as well. The animation is good, but it might look a bit weird to many. However, once we get past that, the storyline will get you hooked on its premise. The characters are also very likeable, and you will cheer for them throughout. So, just watch this anime right away.
