Rivers of Fate Ending Explained

The series opens with teenage schoolgirl Janalice finding out that her boyfriend has leaked their private video. Shunned by her classmates and talked down to by her parents, she is eventually sent to live with her aunt. There, she is constantly terrorised by her aunt’s sleazy boyfriend, who tries to get intimate with her. She eventually becomes friends with Dionete and Miltinho, who tells her about his sister, Luzia, who was kidnapped some time ago.

Meanwhile, pirates, headed by Preá, attack Mariangel, and in the scuffle, her son and husband are murdered. Heartbroken, she vows revenge with Zé Do Boi’s help. As tensions rise between Preá and Gigante over control of the gang, Janalice calls her father to tell him what has been going on at her aunt’s house as she tries to help Miltinho. She asks Dionete to ask for her boyfriend’s phone, but once at her house that night, she is attacked by the boyfriend and, eventually, while making a run for it, she is abducted by Preá and his gang.

In a surprising turn of events, Preá takes an immediate liking to her and tries to save her, but to no avail. After he hands the girls over to Zé Elídio, he vows to get her back. At Zé Elídio’s, all the girls, including Janalice, are assaulted by him before they are handed over to Philippe Soutin, who prepares to auction them off. The two men make a plan to auction them at the mayor’s birthday party and make a quick buck before Soutin takes them away to Cayenne.

Meanwhile, still on a warpath, Mariangel first goes to the police for help. But when that falls through, she decides to take matters into her own hands. Amadeu, trying to figure out where Janalice went, helps her out in that regard, and she eventually helps to look for Janalice while first killing Tabaco and then Gigante.

In episode 4, both Mariangel and Preá try to get Janalice back before the auction while the latter makes a plan for herself. Mariangel recruits a former colleague to go undercover and “win” Janalice in the auction before helping her flee, while Preá takes cash to win the auction himself. Crisotbal eventually wins Janalice, but before he can tell her the plan, Janalice attacks him, steals his money and makes a run for it. Preá catches her on the way, and while outside, the police arrive. He tries to force her to leave with him, unable to comprehend that she isn’t interested in him.

However, before that, the two are confronted by Philippe. The two men get into a standoff over Janalice and eventually shoot each other. Mariangel, witnessing everything from close by, calls for her to run off with her, and Janalice finally finds her freedom. Mariangel drops her off at her mother’s place, but she eventually chooses to stay with Mariangel, realising that she will have the happiness and freedom that she always dreamed of with her.
