The new season brings fresh focus to stories old and new and focuses intently on character growth and expanding its lore that is sure to leave fans in stitches.

Rick and Morty Season 8 Episode 1: Plot & Characters
The first episode of the new Rick and Morty season pulls all the focus on Summer and takes place inside a punishment simulation built by Rick to punish his grandchildren for not returning his chargers. However, things obviously go very wrong, and it ends up in very weird places! Without giving away any spoilers, it’s a wild ride from start to end, but that’s true for every episode of this show. It’s an unusual setup that drives the narrative forward and is a satirical look at tech dependency.
Fans had a swell time not just with the absurd start to this insane overreaction (or is it?). One user wrote, @ReaganRRidley, “SPOILERS: My opinion of Rick and Morty S08E01 – Summer of all fears: For me this episode 1 of season 8 of Rick and Morty we started off somewhat well. And all because of a cell phone charger. Actually, I give it a 7/10. Acceptable.”

Truly, there are a lot of layers to this tale as the exaggerated dystopia doesn’t feel like just another gag after a while. It’s almost like this season’s Black Mirror that highlights the terrible results of being obsessed with our devices. This makes this season sharper and more relatable. Sharing a similar sentiment, one user wrote, @tommya097 – “Really solid premiere for #rickAndMorty season 8. Loved the premise of the matrix and actually seeing the kids in an adult life. That whole concept was hilarious but also really fucked up. Solid solid premiere. Excited to see where the season goes.”
Another highlight of this season is the deliberate shift from a tangled lore to a more character-focused storytelling. Creator Dan Harmon and showrunner Scott Marder emphasised that Rick and Morty Season 8 will be more focused on individual character arcs that will result in viewers having an up-close and personal relationship with them, which will ultimately help in making the storylines richer.
That is highlighted in the first episode as we understand Summer’s thought processes as her simulated rise to power reflects a deep desire to be taken seriously. Meanwhile, Morty’s character arc sheds light on his trauma from past experiences. For a show that is known for some very disturbing, nihilistic jokes, these nuanced moments truly make it shine and give it the direction that it deserves.
