Revenant Episode 9 Recap

When Hong-sae opens the door for the possessed San-young, the evil spirit reaches for Munchun. Since nobody can see the ghost, as usual, Munchun also goes for his own death. He opens the window, and tells Hongsae that Hae-sang was right from the beginning before jumping to his death. Hongsae is completely shocked to see his chief ending his life without any external force.

When San-young and Hae-sang reach, they witness Munchun falling down and passing away. Hae-sang yells at San-young who gets possessed once again. He asks her why she hasn’t killed him to which she responds that his time hasn’t come yet. Hongsae becomes shattered to see San-young’s attitude, unaware that she is possessed by an evil spirit.

A possessed San-young goes to a party before returning home as the original San-young. When she wakes up she has no idea about the previous night but soon learns that she was at a party. Her mother thinks she went with Semi to celebrate her exam results.

San-young becomes disturbed knowing that she went to a party after killing Munchun. She then hears the evil spirit’s voice that says it needs her. At the police station, Hongsae is questioned and he tells them about a woman who stopped by. Nobody believes him since there isn’t any evidence to prove Sanyoung was there (because the spirit came in her disguise but not in the flesh).

Hongsae is given the responsibility to be the mourner of Munchun and that’s when he realises Munchun has no family. The police wrap the case by stating that Munchun ended his life because of loneliness. San-young meets Hongsae and asks her to arrest her. A furious Hongsae tells her to stay away from him because he might kill her. He adds that nobody will believe him since there’s no evidence to show that she killed Munchun.

Hongsae meets Hae-sang and requests him to apologise on behalf of him to Munchun’s ghost. We then have a flashback that shows why Munchun gave socks to Hae-sang and stayed beside him all this while. Hae-sang is extremely sad about his only comforter’s death and decides to move to Munchun’s house.

Hongsae now believes in ghosts and decides to assist Hae-sang. Hae-sang understands that Munchun was killed because he found critical evidence about Mokdan. Hongsae decides to get that evidence once again despite it being destroyed by the spirit.

Hae-sang finds San-young at her grandmother’s place with all the furniture turned upside down. A worried Hae-sang realises that the evil spirit is getting out of hand. He asks San-young to tell him what she saw when Munchun died but she doesn’t answer. This is because the evil spirit threatened her that if she tells everything to him, it will kill Hae-sang.

Hae-sang finds San-young’s actions suspicious and warns her that he will get rid of the evil spirit. San-young then starts her search for the documents that she saw in her vision when Munchun died. She finds a ledger written in 1958 in which she gets the cheque that Choi Manwol received from Junghyeon Capital.

She figures that June 7th, the day when Mokdan was kidnapped needs more observation. She also learns that June 24th is when Mokdan’s body was found. Additionally, San-young finds details regarding what the villagers received after Mokdan’s death.

On the other hand, Hae-sang tries to find out why the evil spirit chose to kill certain people. He meets with a victim Chae Seo-rin’s colleague to learn more. Seo-rin’s colleague tells that the deceased friend was working at the library where she preserved old materials. Before her death, Seo-rin destroyed a book that might have a link with the evil spirit.

Sadly, there isn’t another copy available and Hae-sang has to find it somehow. He also notices that the author of the book died by suicide as well. With the help of his friends, he finds the author’s son and learns that the book is a 1959 graduation yearbook from Jangjin Middle School.

Hongsae fails to find the files of Mokdan that Munchun got but he finds details regarding Gang-mu’s connection with the village leader through whom he got all the possessed items. Hongsae visits Gyeong-mun to know about Gang-mu. She tells him that she’s not much aware of the old village leader. He also asks her whether San-young has been acting weirdly, making Gyeong-mun panic and call San-young but the latter doesn’t pick.

Hongsae follows San-young to a hotel. Over there, she finds a plant that was donated by her father and digs the spot to uncover the red hairpin. This hotel is where Hae-sang’s mother died as well (it was later renovated into a hotel). The possessed San-young then comes to Hongsae and asks her to take her to the amusement park.

Hongsae stays with San-young until she becomes the real her. Hongsae notices how the evil spirit changes her and navigates. When San-young comes back to reality, she hails for a cab and quickly leaves. Hongsae tells Hae-sang that he noticed the possessed San-young disliking small kids.

When San-young returns home, she locks herself in the room and pins up the line of distribution. This is when she gets a vision of the moon’s drawings. She checks the moon phases on June 7th and June 24th, 1958, and learns that the former date was a waning gibbous and the latter date was a waxing gibbous. She also observes that there was no full moon between those dates.

This raises a question for her. If Mokdan was locked in the room, how did she see the moon in 1958? Is it really Mokdan or someone else that’s possessing San-young? When she wonders this question, the ghost appears outside her window.

Meanwhile, Hae-sang and Hongsae find the graduation yearbook of 1959 and learn that the reason why Gang-mu failed to exorcise the ghost is because he didn’t find the ghost’s name. Mokdan is not the juvenile ghost because the sacrificed girl was a teenager and not a child.

Back to San-young, she asks the evil spirit outside her window, “You aren’t Mokdan, are you?” and the episode ends.

Revenant Episode 9 Review

One of the most chilling episodes ever. Now that we know Mokdan isn’t the real spirit but there’s someone else behind all the issues, the next episodes will be even more troublesome for the trio. Hopefully, they’ll find justice and avenge all the lives that were ended by the evil spirit.

Kim Tae-ri’s acting deserves a huge ovation and it’s no wonder that she’s a great actress. Her acting skills are prominent and amazing. Nobody could have ruled this role better than her.

Revenant is available for streaming on Disney+.
