Resident Evil Review on X: The Resident Evil movie 2026 has finally arrived, with Zach Cregger taking over the long-running horror franchise, and if the first wave of reactions on X is to go by, the response is enthusiastic.
The reaction is not unanimous because, obviously, the internet would never give us that spectacle, but there is a pretty clear feeling that this is the Resident Evil movie people have been waiting for. One of the most enthusiastic reactions came from @SceneVaultHQ, which described the film as something closer to survival horror than the loud zombie action movie they expected. The reaction praised the film for throwing viewers into the nightmare rather than spending hours to explain the mythology. They wrote, “I liked that it doesn’t spend forever explaining everything to you. You get thrown into this nightmare and slowly start figuring out what the hell is going on. Some of the choices are definitely going to divide people, especially if you’re expecting the games to be copied scene for scene.”
The user gave the film 8/10 and a clear “TO WATCH” mark while making an important distinction that the audience should enter expecting new interpretations of the franchise rather than a live-action reaction of the games.
The First Half Crisis
X user @MovieFilesLive had perhaps the most telling reactions to the structure of the film. According to them, the opening 30-40 minutes were perfect horror; they write, “The first 30–40 minutes are damn near PERFECT horror. It’s tense, scary, atmospheric, and actually feels like you’re trapped inside a Resident Evil game.”
But the user adds that the movie gets sillier afterwards.
The transition from genuine horror to something sillier keeps coming up across reactions. It is not really a flaw but rather evidence that the tonal shift is part of the fun itself.
Resident Evil Is Funny
Another user @mavericksmovies describes the film as leaning much more heavily into comedy than anticipated. The user still found the movie entertaining and well-paced, praising Cregger’s ability to throw increasingly absurd obstacles at the protagonist.
The user also felt that the movie sometimes “feels frustratingly…small? And very few actual zombies for a zombie movies. Ending left with me with a bad taste in my mouth as well.”
The reaction thus gives the movie more than a “viewers loved it” angle.
The Horror Still Has Space
The one thing that X has been repeatedly mentioning is that horror itself works. For user @DangervilleTeam, the film was “absolutely insane” and praised its direction, music and cinematography, particularly the atmosphere that kept them completely hooked.
The user gave the film a 9.5/10 while admitting that the comedy occasionally threatens to lean a little too heavily into the experience.
User @TheCineprism similarly praised the film’s ability to balance creature effects, gore, suspense and spectacle with moments that allow paranoia to build. They write, “Especially impressive in this regard is the ability to maintain the balance between horror and spectacle. The creature effects, gore, suspense and set pieces provide the film with a sense of danger, while the quiet moments make the paranoia grow.”
For them, Cregger seems to understand that the heart of the film is not simply zombies, monsters or Umbrella Corporation lore.
User @GabrielDivina2 was less interested in moderation and called it a must-watch for both the horror audience and Resident Evil fans.
What Cregger Gets About Resident Evil
X user @Gibboanxious particularly praised the combination of survival horror, body horror, cosmic horror, action, and dark comedy, saying that the different elements work together rather than constantly fighting for attention.
The user also highlighted something that seems particularly important to Cregger’s version: the people should actually feel like people.
So, Is Resident Evil Worth Watching?
The current critical response suggests that Cregger’s gamble has landed with both critics and audiences, and Rotten Tomatoes currently lists it at 96% from 185 reviews and an audience score of 91% from 1000+ ratings at the time of writing this.
X reactions are circling: Cregger is not attempting to recreate a specific Resident Evil game much, with the detractors too, and perhaps that is the most honest way of X conversations. Nobody seems to be particularly bored or annoyed by the movie. Some people think horror is the key; some think comedy takes over; some are obsessed with the first half and less convinced by the second; reactions are different, but none fall steep to negative.
The seemingly common thread is that Zach Cregger made people feel something while watching Resident Evil.
