Red Swan Episode 1 Recap

red swan episode 1 review

In the first episode, we see talented golfer Oh Wan-soo giving an impassioned speech at UNICEF against ISIS and bringing to light their violent acts of terrorism against many women. However, in spite of a threat to her life, she chooses to go to Manila to continue with her fundraising efforts while Seo Do-yoon walks around in a casino and gets information on an assassin for hire who is scheduled to do another “job” in Manila soon.

He soon realises that the man delivering the money is someone he knows and reminisces about the time he saw the contract killer murdering his friend a few weeks ago. Elsewhere, Wan-soo goes to the Makati Shopping District, followed closely by Do-yoon, who knows that the contract killer is about to cause a horrible scene there. Soon enough, the shooter targets Wan-soo but misses the shot. Do-yoon gets into action immediately and saves her as the shooter continues to target her. He eventually gets two and two together and realises that this shooter is Mr L and that Park Kyung-ju had paid him to kill Wan-soo.

He runs off with her to keep her safe and asks her not to contact anyone in case someone catches her. As they freshen up at his place, sparks fly between the two although they don’t want to address it. He eventually drops her off at the embassy and Kim Yong-gu picks her up. We learn that Kyung-ju is Wan-soo’s Head of Security as he meets Do-yoon in the evening. Meanwhile, Wan-soo is unable to forget Do-yoon. That night, she gets into a fight with Park Mi-ran, who threateningly orders her to be killed while Do-yoon thinks about Ju-hyuk and is left heartbroken at being unable to take revenge.

He remembers Kyung-ju’s offer of working for Hwain Group and decides to take it up, realising that it was someone in Hwain Group who ordered Ju-hyuk to be murdered as well. The next day, against everyone’s wishes, Wan-soo holds a press conference to alert the press of ISIS trying to murder her. She also goes along with hosting the party that night against her husband’s wishes and is surprised to find Do-yoon in front of her, joining her security team.

With awkward foreigners spewing their lines without much passion or believability, we at least have two well-known actors, Rain and Kim Ha-neul slowly turning the heat on with the promise of a love affair sometime soon. I am looking forward to watching these two have a tumultuous push-and-pull relationship where obviously having an affair is horrible but in which they are unable to ignore their feelings as well. A true-blue melodrama is what we audiences deserve and considering a tiny glimpse of budding feelings in the first episode itself, I am sure there’s something to be had here.

Other than that, there’s the plotting and planning and, if I get it correctly, we know almost everything about who is trying to murder whom already. We might question why but truth be told, we already know why. The first episode is somewhat engaging, promising more convoluted things in the upcoming episodes, but doesn’t give us a thorough look into anyone yet. Maybe that’s what will keep us watching till the end, who knows?
