Ranma ½ 2024 Episode 4 Recap

Ranma ½ 2024 Episode 5 Review

The episode kicks off with the arrival of a new character, an enigmatic martial artist, who we first see defeating a massive boar in the countryside. He’s searching for Ranma’s school but has ended up far off course, clearly struggling with directions. Meanwhile, Ranma’s days at Akane’s home are anything but dull. Despite his constant squabbles with his fiancée, there’s a growing sense of camaraderie between them.

At school, Ranma finally encounters this newcomer, Hibiki, who has arrived to challenge him. As it turns out, they were once schoolmates and frequent sparring partners, though their last challenge was never completed. Hibiki has a dreadful sense of direction, often getting lost, and once even wandered across Japan trying to find Ranma. During that time, Ranma waited for three days before realizing Hibiki was completely off course. To this day, Hibiki mistakenly believes Ranma intentionally avoids their fights.

In this episode, Hibiki is determined to settle things with Ranma, though his reasons remain a bit vague. The fight escalates quickly, and Akane, initially just a bystander, gets drawn into the action. This moment highlights Ranma’s concern for her, showing that their relationship is gradually moving toward something deeper.

Akane’s precious hair has been cut, and Ranma is visibly disturbed. He did not think things would lead to this, and he even tried to calm her down by offering himself to be beaten up. Akane definitely takes this opportunity and slaps Ryoga and Ranma pretty hard before leaving everyone in confusion. A bit of background is shown regarding the importance of her hair. Akane did not keep her hair long because she wanted it but because she thought that would hopefully help her get the attention of Doctor Tofu.

Doctor Tofu is in love with Akane’s big sister, Kasumi, who also has very long hair. Akane thought if she had the same style, she too would have a chance with him. But now that she is clearer about how much Doctor Tofu loves Kasumi, she understands that hair will not do anything to change his feelings. Thus, after crying profusely in front of her beloved, she finally moves on from her feelings and the loss of her hair. This whole ordeal is witnessed by Ranma, who is also confused about his conflicted emotions.

He wants to say that Akane actually looks cute with her short hair but his tsundere personality will not let him agree to that. Plus, the moment he tries to be good with Akane, she thinks he is doing it because he feels guilty. Thus, it is apparent that both of them are catching feelings but are too dense to understand or confess to the other.

On top of that, Ryoga’s vengeance against Ranma finally gets cleared in this episode. Apparently, he had followed Ranma to China and faced the same fate of transforming into something else after getting doused with cold water. This portion was specifically hilarious as, in a weird way, Ryoga has become a love rival of Ranma.

Verdict

I absolutely love this series because of how simple yet entertaining it can be. The characters are very likeable, and the plot is also not that complex, but what it brings to the table is really good slapstick comedy that works every time. The romance is also very well fleshed out, and it makes you ship the couple even more.
