Purple Hearts Review: An Entanglement of Two Worlds

Netflix dropped another romantic flick called Purple Hearts, starring Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine. The movie revolves around the lives of a musician and an ex-addict turned US Marine and how they work things out between them. This latest Netflix project is based on a 2017 novel of the same name written by Tess Wakefield.

In order to receive military perks, a promising singer and a troubled U.S. Marine commit to a marriage of convenience. What was supposed to be a fictitious marriage, however, begins to resemble a genuine one when an unanticipated tragedy occurs and the soldier is sent home earlier than anticipated.

The movie runs for 2 hours and 2 minutes. The cast includes Carson and Galitzine, along with Kendall Chappell, and Chosen Jacobs. It is available on Netflix with English subtitles.

The official Netflix synopsis reads,

Brought together by circumstance, bound by a marriage of convenience. But when their fake romance sparks real feelings, will they risk falling in love?

– Purple Hearts Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

Based on a novel by Tess Wakefield, Purple Hearts focuses on the lives of two young people in great financial stress. Sofia Carson plays the role of Cassie Salazar, a musician who works multiple jobs to deal with her Type 1 diabetes. She meets her future love interest Luke (played by Nicholas Galitzine) in a bar where she works as a waitress. The two don’t get on with a good start but their paths cross again and this time for good.

The plot is woven around young people who are financially unadept and try to find ways to live their lives. Luke is a US marine who previously was an addict. The two marry to avail the financial military benefits, and this is where it all starts. Do they get to live their lives happily together or do their differences pick them apart?

Purple Hearts Review: An Entanglement of Two Worlds

The film is beautifully created with plots and subplots, and the characters evolve, mature, and grow while facing the hardships of life. The music is spot on, with Sofia being a part of the music team. But at some point in the movie, the chemistry between the two main characters seems to deteriorate, which makes it a little uncomfortable.

A few scenes in the movie are not in contrast with the movie’s storyline; as a result, they seem unnecessary. The movie also throws light upon the health care system of the US military and government as Luke tries to change his former lifestyle by joining the Marine Corps. The flow is adequately smooth, makes you happy, and also cry at some point. It does, however, seem predictable after a while because the storyline isn’t all that innovative and neither is the ending.

Purple Hearts: Final Thoughts

Purple Hearts

Overall the movie hits the spot with the melodramatic theme, and the style of filming is very appealing as the storyline progresses. The chemistry between the actors does seem a little off at some points but not too much. The emotional essence of the movie is strong and evident in terms of family, love, and life. If you are looking for good book-to-movie adaptations, add Purple Hearts to your watchlist.
