Prime Video Announces Like a Dragon: Yakuza Based on Popular Japanese Game Series

Prime Video has announced the exclusive premiere of the Japanese Original series Like a Dragon: Yakuza, streaming from October 25, 2024, in over 240 countries and territories. This live-action adaptation of SEGA’s hit game franchise, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, features Ryoma Takeuchi (who played Shinnosuke Tomari in Kamen Rider Drive) as the iconic Kazuma Kiryu and is directed by Masaharu Take, well known for films such as 100 Yen Love, The Ringside Story and The Gun.

The Yakuza game series, launched by SEGA in 2005, has captivated fans with its depiction of gangsters in the fictional Kamurochō district, modelled after Tokyo’s Kabukichō. The series offers an adult-oriented, dramatic exploration of crime and justice, elements that will now be expanded upon in the television adaptation.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza spans two time periods, 1995 and 2005, and delves into the life of Kazuma Kiryu, his childhood friends, and the consequences of his decisions as a Yakuza member. The show promises intense fighting scenes and deep human drama and is loosely inspired by the first game, 2005’s Yakuza.

Ryoma Takeuchi expressed his honour in portraying Kiryu, emphasizing the dedication and effort he invested in the role. Director Masaharu Take and other key figures from the production team highlighted their commitment to faithfully bringing the beloved game’s story and characters to life.

James Farrell, Head of International Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed excitement about the series’ potential global appeal, citing the growing demand for Japanese content. Masayoshi Yokoyama, Head of RYUGAGOTOKU Studio and Executive Producer, praised the adaptation for its engaging portrayal of Kamurochō and Kazuma Kiryu, anticipating that both longtime fans and newcomers will appreciate the show’s gritty realism.

“Like a Dragon: Yakuza” will be available exclusively on Prime Video worldwide starting October 25, 2024.
