Poker Face Episode 5 Review: As Grippy as it Gets

Poker Face Episode 5 finds the sleuth Charlie Cale inside an old-age home along with peculiar inmates, which leads to another astounding murder mystery. The episode peaks in terms of twists and turns and makes up for an intriguing instalment of the series.

For the unversed, the series is created by Rian Johnson (Looper, Knives Out) and is divided into 10 episodes with an average runtime of 50-60 minutes. Moreover, the complete cast of the show features Benjamin Brat, Stephanie Hsu, David Castañeda, Adrien Brody, Danielle Macdonald, Dascha Polanco, Lil Rel Howery, Ellen Barkin, Chloë Sevigny, Tim Meadows and several others.

Poker Face Episode 5 Review

The fifth episode of Poker Face continues to maintain the same level of tension and suspense as the previous episodes. And the setting of an old age home adds a new dimension to the series and provides a unique backdrop for Charlie’s latest investigation saga.

The episode starts with Charlie as she gets to know the residents of the old age home (Irene and Joyce), and begins to form a premature connection with them. However, the death of a pivotal resident pushes her back into the detective cap and takes her by surprise.

Even though she is quick to jump into action, she suspects that Irene and Joyce may be involved. This episode showcases Charlie’s unwavering ability to detect beyond the foreseen and her strong desire to uncover the truth, even in the face of seemingly odd obstacles.  Furthermore, the dynamic between the three characters is expertly crafted and provides a welcome change of pace from the fast-paced action of the previous episodes.

The climax of the episode is incredibly thrilling, as Charlie’s investigation leads to a path filled with twists and turns. The eventual reveal of the killer is skillfully executed and will keep you captivated until the very last moment.

Natasha Lyonne shines again as the titular sleuth in Poker Face Episode 5. Her portrayal of the curious, innate and sharp-witted detective is simply engrossing. The depth and nuance that Lyonne brings to her character are impressive, as she seamlessly transitions between moments of humour, compassion, and intense scrutiny.

All in all, the episode peaks in terms of the series arc and keeps you invested throughout. There is not a single dull moment that fades your attention or dwindles your intrigue. Moreover, the series is halfway through its run, and it feels like things are just getting started in the sleuth world.
