The new storyline and fresh plot continue with Platinum End Episode 16. As our characters try to deal with their rapid persecution, greater forces are now at play. Were they able to earn their freedom? Let’s find out in this review!
Platinum End Episode 16 Overview

Platinum End comes to us by the writers and creators of Death Note and Bakuman, Takeshi Obata and Tsugami Ohba. As if that wasn’t enough reason to get excited about this show, it is being directed by two prominent people in the anime industry. As it is a two-cour series, its first part is being directed by Hideya Takahashi, who has previously directed JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5. The second part is directed by Kazuchika Kise, the animation director behind Your Name and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The series is being produced by Studio Signal.MD, the studio behind several well-known anime such as Recovery of an MMO Junkie and Mars Red. If you’d like to catch up on our review of the fifteenth episode, you can do so right here!

Platinum End Episode 16 Review- Decently Done

After 16 episodes, this show still manages to surprise me at every step. In a previous review, I dubbed it “The Most Inconsistent Show Of All Time”, and that statement gets more accurate by the week. You truly never know before starting a Platinum End episode if you’re going to watch something genuinely interesting or a dumpster fire. Okay, let’s end the build-up right here as I reveal to you that this was a great episode.

Susumu, the kid who didn’t even want to die yet still received his powers, has been a fantastic addition to the show. Everything that he does makes perfect sense for someone like him to do. He is a kid, so it makes sense that he isn’t as involved with all this “God Candidate” tomfoolery as the others. He also couldn’t give a toss about killing people or becoming God, so he entrusts the entire world with the information and lets them deal with this, as they should always have been able to anyways. He also has more power and knowledge than he lets on, alongside being the only one smart enough to run away when the going gets rough.

His appreciation for Mirai also makes sense from his point of view, although we, as the audience, know just how wrong that confidence is. He only saw Mirai at his best moment, when he used his ideals and a lot of help from Saki, Mukaido, and Hajime to defeat a Kanade who had already been shot with a red arrow. It doesn’t sound like a big deal when put like that, does it? Well, I agree, but it is to Susumu. He sees in Mirai what few people have before- an escape.

Platinum End Episode 16 introduced the globe-spanning manhunt plotline and introduced two new characters who are both police officers. Their dynamic with Mirai and Saki was decent, and I love the fact that Mirai’s insistence on not killing anyone was of use to him at least once in the show. However little it means, it does indicate that his efforts and our patience with him aren’t entirely wasted. The team-up didn’t flow well with the direction the show had previously, but it works well in the current one.

Overall, Platinum End Episode 16 was a solid outing for the show. The music sounded incredible while the animation lagged a little, putting a lot of its eggs in the close-up character shot basket, which it has done countless times previously. The current direction makes me more hopeful that the show will manage to straighten out and end in a manner that wouldn’t make you want to deny ever having watched the show. However, the Manga situation that I recently learned about doesn’t fill me with any confidence.
Verdict
Platinum End Episode 16 was a solid outing and a great step towards making the show more palatable and enjoyable. Let’s see if the show can keep this momentum up!
