Trauma and the Ghosts it Can Conjure: Channel Zero The Dream Door

The rise on social media right now with regard to outing abusers and past traumatic memories reminded me of this interesting anthology series that many are unaware of. Channel Zero is a wonderful work of fiction. The stories are itself based on creepypastas, which, for those who don’t know, can be quite the scare-fest.

So, Channel Zero, as said earlier, is an anthology series that focuses on a new creepypasta story every season. Unlike other anthologies like American Horror Story, which kind of pushed its own self towards destruction with too much flashy storytelling, this one is different. Every season has something very… creepy. I can’t really put my finger on it, but its claustrophobia-inducing sets and equally mind-bending ghosts really do set it apart.

However, even though the first three seasons were purely supernatural in nature, the fourth season, titled The Dream Door, is more dependant on human beings and their trauma and its manifestations.

Trauma

Jill Dream Door Channel Zero
Jill in Channel Zero: The Dream Door

Channel Zero: The Dream Door starts off with Jill and Tom who just got married and moved into their new home. They are very much in love, as just-married couples usually are. However, there’s something wrong, just under the surface. You know, something you can quite make out, but just can’t exactly put your finger on. That feeling has a way of shaping your everyday life – not absolutely, but just a little nudge here and a push there. That’s trauma. And we later learn that when Jill’s father left when she was young, her world fell apart.

That is actually something which is very common for people who go through trauma but suppress it. You tend to “forget” but it’s still there at the back of your mind. So much so that it indirectly has an effect on your present/future decisions.

Coping

Pretzel Jack and Jill
Pretzel Jack and Jill

Now, this is where it gets ugly on Channel Zero. Jill can project her sadness in a very unique way. She can create anything in the world by channelling her sadness. It, quite literally, creates a door for her so that her coping mechanisms kick in. And that, for her, is Pretzel Jack. He was a figment of Jill’s childhood imagination that became a source of comfort for her during her difficult times. However, as times progressed, Pretzel Jack was forgotten by a growing Jill. It took Tom’s alleged infidelity to bring that past trauma, and Pretzel Jack, to the surface once more.

This is a very important thing that people who have gone through trauma in their childhood can attest to. Things that happen in childhood tend to get buried during the teenage/early adulthood years. However, since you don’t really work on those problems, they tend to come back to your present with the slightest trigger. The Dream Door did a brilliant job at showing that – how childhood trauma, or trauma in general, should be dealt with as and when it happens. Sweeping it under the rug only makes the problem bigger, and when it becomes too much for the rug to control, it tends to burst out – often with terrible consequences.

Consequences

Channel Zero
Pretzel Jack

The consequences, in Jill’s case, came as Pretzel Jack attacking anyone who caused Jill distress. Because he is a part of Jill herself. Her desire, and subsequent inability, to remove that source of sadness from her life triggers Pretzel Jack to do what she cannot. This causes unnecessary harm to the people around her – many of whom die. Tom is harmed more than once as well.

This works in the real world as well. Dealing with sadness and anger are very important parts of growing as a person. As with the rug analogy, if they are not dealt with quickly and tactfully, they tend to overflow and harm people which we might tend to regret later. However, when the regret comes, it’s too late and the deed is done. There’s no way to undo it.

Actions

Channel Zero
Jill in Channel Zero: The Dream Door

Jill finally gets a chance to deal with her trauma when she faces her problems face-to-face. In Channel Zero, that happens when she faces Ian, her long-lost half brother who had been manipulating her from the beginning. Only when she removes the cause of her problems does she get to have a life with Tom and start a family.

Similarly, in real life, facing your problems and removing them from their roots is what helps people to move forward with life. You cannot expect to carry the weight of your past trauma and live your life normally. It’s a process that has to be undertaken in order to move forward with life and look forward to better prospects and opportunities.

The genius of the The Dream Door…

Jill and Tom
Jill and Tom

… lies in the fact that it is more than a supernatural series. There are real problems here that most people would be able to identify with. Tom and Jill’s dynamics are very real. Tom gaslighting Jill in order to get away from her too-real questions regarding his infidelity hit right at home.

This is what happens when there are things that are left ignored in the past. And it’s not just Jill – Tom is just as broken and they both realise that towards the end of Dream Door.

 Oh btw

Pretzel Jack
Pretzel Jack

Channel Zero is a brilliant series that is worth a watch. Although it is not new (The Dream Door came out in 2018), yet it does portray a lot of things accurately. Especially the scares – there are very few jump-scares and the atmospheric tension and creepiness will take your breath away – quite literally. On top of that, the practical effects are brilliant. Troy James as Pretzel Jack is the best part of The Dream Door. His death was absolutely heartbreaking.

Netflix’s The Half of It: A Heartful Teenage Rom-Com

Released on May 1 on Netflix and directed by Alice Wu, The Half of It is a coming-of-age rom-com. Starring Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer and Alexxis Lemire in the lead roles, The Half of It is a heartwarming and endearing movie about the problems of teenage life.

A teenage drama?

Of all the movie genres that are there in the world, I am especially attracted to rom-com. When I started watching The Half of It, it did feel like a story about an introverted teen who eventually falls in love and everything changes. The story seemed pretty familiar, a nerd teenager and a jock chasing a pretty girl. The girl will eventually fall for the nerd and they’ll live happily ever after.

You know, when a song plays in the background and the nerd gets a makeover where she chops her hair, gets rid of those glasses and tries to walk in heels? The typical kind? The Half of It features “the makeover” too but it is not the cliched kind. It’s about opening up, feeling and growing. It’s pure and praiseworthy.

the half of it

The Half of It opens with a quote from Plato’s, The Symposium: “Love is simply the name for the desire and pursuit of the whole.” We are then introduced to Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), the nerd teenager who writes everyone’s assignment for a few dollars and is teased for her name. Throughout, Ellie is seen in the constant turmoil of either going to a good college outside Squahamish or staying in this small town which undermines her capabilities, with her father.

A few minutes into the movie and you know it’s more than the usual, ‘to all the rom-com’s I’ve seen before.’

Love triangle?

The film is not devoid of love. It has love in many ways. Paul (Daniel Diemer) approaches Ellie to write just one love letter to the beautiful girl he likes, Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire). She, however, refuses to do that as she thinks it’s unfair. But eventually agrees as she has a bill to pay and the money can help.

There is an exchange of letters and texts between Aster and Ellie (writing on behalf of Paul, without Aster’s knowledge). While Paul likes her for how beautiful she is, Ellie sees more in her than the outer beauty. Like “how she twirls her hair when she’s writing, how her life bursts out like she can’t help herself and she stops being so perfect, how you can live in the ocean of her thoughts and feel like she knows”. This also indicates Ellie’s hidden liking for Aster.

Netflix's The Half of It: A Heartful Teenage Rom-Com
Leah Lewis and Daniel Diemer

Through this, Ellie expresses herself for the first time. The real Ellie. And Aster, the popular kid whom everyone loves, also isn’t what she has to be in front of people. She feels like a misfit, she feels sad and wants to escape. She is like every teenager out there. The dynamics may seem like a love triangle but it’s not the same.

The friendship between Paul and Ellie is beautifully drawn as well, he helps her grow out of her shell. Initially, Paul does seem like a dull guy who isn’t good at sports, can’t write his own letter but he has a heart of gold. He’s a loyal friend.

All the feels

There is a scene in The Half of It where Aster and Ellie go to an isolated lake in which they both float in water and talk about life, god and existence, listening to music – it’s sheer beauty. Their reflections are seen on the water which may represent another place, another reality where life isn’t the same. It’s not this confusing and messy. An ideal teen world. The scene is beautiful and represents the dichotomy that teenagers feel in this confusing and unfair world.

Paul, on the other hand, realizes that he is attracted to Ellie and tries to kiss her, which she denies. Aster sees this and leaves both Ellie and Paul. We also realize Ellie’s sexuality here. Yes, she is gay and she is attracted to Aster. Paul says it is a ‘sin’ which represent the Catholic belief system he belongs to. This pushes the two friends to stop talking. There is a binary in both Aster’s and Ellie’s beliefs and sexuality. While Ellie is an atheist, Aster is the daughter of a preacher. But they are connected by the roots of thoughts and feelings.

Netflix's The Half of It: A Heartful Teenage Rom-Com
Leah Lewis and Alexxis Lemire in The Half of It

In this process of feelings and hurting, Aster feels betrayed and disconnects from both of them. In a church session, Trig Carson (Wolfgang Novogratz), whom Aster is supposed to marry eventually, is on the verge of proposing her. However, Paul and Ellie come to Aster’s rescue.

Love isn’t patient and kind and humble. Love is… messy and horrible and selfish and bold. It’s not finding a perfect half. It’s the trying, the reaching and failing. Love is being willing to ruin your good painting for the chance of a great one. The boldest stroke. – Ellie Chu

This heartfelt monologue of Ellie is one of the most beautiful scenes in The Half of It. It’s honest, it isn’t sugar-coated and does not idealize love and that’s what makes this perfect.

A beautiful end…

Before the whole church scenario, Paul visits Ellie’s home to deliver some things. Her father tells him how sad Ellie has been all the while he was not there for her as a friend. This scene is beautiful as it leads to a realization for both Paul and Edwin Chu (Collin Chou), Ellie’s father. Paul realizes that he has to accept Ellie for who she is and what he is doing is wrong. Meanwhile, Edwin realizes that he has to accept his life and the change it brought if he really wants his daughter to grow and go to college.

On the other hand, Ellie talks to Aster for one last time before leaving. Ellie kisses Aster and it’s beautiful like a final goodbye and a hope to meet again.

When finally Ellie leaves for college, Paul comes to the station. The scene is heartfelt as Paul is seen having tears and finally he chases Ellie’s train just like he chased her cycle the first time they met. This leaves Ellie sobbing and, honestly, me too.

The Half of It is a beautiful film and is a must-watch if you’re looking for some good rom-com to watch. With the themes of love and hope in the centre, this film is a different story from the recent ones of the same genre. It does not only show teenage infatuation and love but also the loneliness and confusion that comes with it.

Tom Cruise and NASA to Make a Movie on the International Space Station

Tom Cruise is someone who is known to take part in very risky stunts. For his Mission: Impossible movies, he has almost done it all. That includes doing a crazy helicopter stunt including a Halo jump (M:I Fallout), holding on to an Airbus A400 as it takes off (M:I Rogue Nation), climbing the Burj Khalifa (M:I Ghost Protocol) and many, many stunts with motorcycles.

So, it comes as no surprise that Tom Cruise is all set to work with NASA. The movie will apparently be shot on the International Space Station. However, details are pretty scarce at this moment.

The news was first reported by Deadline. The movie will reportedly be an action-adventure feature and the Cruise is working with SpaceX on the project.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted the news on Tuesday. He mentioned that the agency is excited to work with Cruise on a film which is taking place aboard the International Space Station. Moreover, Cruise’s appearance in the Space Station will definitely inspire popular media to motivate the younger generations to join NASA and help in making all its plans a success.

However, NASA has not confirmed whether the 57-year-old Cruise would himself travel to the Space Station for the filming.

Although SpaceX has yet to confirm its role in the making on the movie, it is entirely possible for Cruise to travel to the Space Station on the Crew Dragon spaceship. There would be enough room in the four people in the spacecraft – Cruise himself, a small crew and an astronaut. However, all of this is still speculation.

SpaceX did, however, announce in February that it will launch four private citizens to orbit around the Earth either at the end of 2021 or early 2022. The passengers would get the Crew Dragon spacecraft for this purpose.

Space travel is quite a popular and exciting prospect at the moment, although it is still in its early stages. Earlier this year, space tourism company Space Adventures announced an agreement with SpaceX to fly paying passengers on a Crew Dragon spacecraft. However, they would not be able to visit the space station. Instead, the Crew Dragon would take its passengers on its own orbit around the Earth – going hundreds of miles above the Space Station to provide a more “enjoyable” view.

As for the movie starring Cruise, the movie does not have a studio associated with it yet and is thus in its very early stages.

Tom Cruise SpaceX Nasa
Tom Cruise

Cruise is not new to matters of space, though. He narrated the 2002 IMAX documentary Space Station 3D. The documentary was filmed by astronauts during the assembly of the International Space Station.

However, this is not the first time that celebrities have tried to reach space in pursuit of something greater. NSYNC’s Lance Bass was almost ready to fly on the Soyuz mission to space in 2002 which fell through due to lack of sponsorships. In another instance,  a Russian actor’s flight to the Russian space station Mir also fell through in 2000 due to lack of funds.

Netflix’s BlackAF is an Insufferable Series About Family Dynamics

BlackAF came out on Netflix on 17 April. And, yes, I realise I am very late to this party. And thank god for that.

BlackAF delves into the life of a family, headed by Kenya Barris, who have gotten into new money and are, well, trying to get a hang of things – to put it mildly. The family consists of Kenya, his wife Joya and their six children. And everyone is insufferable.

Slavery is at fault

#BLACKAF
their family vacations are in Fiji

BlackAF is the most frustrating sitcom that I have watched in a long time. Maybe that was the point of the show – to put the truth out on the screen and show people the struggles of families. But my god did this series test my patience.

Kenya is a TV professional living in Los Angeles who is drowning in privilege. Although he started out struggling pretty bad, he came out at the end of the tunnel with flying colours. So now, the family is, in the truest sense of the term, stinking rich. And they don’t know what to do with that privilege. Now, don’t come at me saying that even rich people have problems because I agree. Everyone has problems. But my god, when you live in a sprawling mansion and have everything ready right infront of you, don’t have to think about how your college tuition is going to be paid or anything else, for that matter, the problems that these people talk about seems a bit vain.

No, seriously, it’s slavery

The family
yes, they have a private jet

Let me just say it right here, Kenya is an obnoxious character. He is everything I don’t want my husband to be. Actually, I don’t want anyone like that within even an inch of me. He’s jealous of his wife’s success, wants her to stay at home and do the things he doesn’t want to do, yet wants to take credit for them, is totally negligent with his children and swears like a pirate infront of them. Oh, also, he doesn’t remember any of his kids’ birthdays.

There’s plenty more of that in BlackAF, but I’ll just leave it up to you to find out.

Slavery at it again

Brooklyn Barris
Brooklyn Barris is a cutie

Oh, don’t worry. It’s not just him, although he is the character I hated the most. All of the kids are privileged to no end and are so tone-deaf that it’s exhausting. And yes, I do realise that their parents might have something to do with it – but all the six kids are insufferable. They all bully each other to no end, but well, so does their father so I mean, yeah whatever it’s cool, I guess?

Joya is probably the only character I like the most in BlackAF, apart from Brooklyn, but that kid’s in his diapers so. She gave up her job as a lawyer to raise the family while her husband worked and probably somewhere feels a little empty because of it. She’s struggling to juggle all of her responsibilities, like women usually have do, without one once of appreciation from Kenya. And although she too has her faults, I found her to be the most real character in the whole series.

It might be something else, but it’s slavery

Kenya and Joya
Kenya and Joya

There are things that I liked about BlackAF though. In very limited places, the series shines and these are the moments that will keep you going. Firstly, all the history that the show presents you with is absolutely heartbreaking and pretty dope at the same time. I like to learn about the history of different people, so these were truly remarkable things to learn about. Secondly, the rare bonding moments that the family has, especially those between Joya and the girls – they are beautiful.

In addition to these, the last episode was pretty great too – well, the fag end of it anyway. The family bonding even though for a very limited time, is truly touching, maybe because they bicker and are generally terrible people throughout the series.

Slavery it is

Kenya and Drea
Kenya and Drea

BlackAF is a series about family and how people are in their real-lives – raw and unfiltered. However, I would really recommend therapy to anyone whose family is like this. It’s not healthy and I don’t want it. The series is 8 episodes long and around 40 minutes each episode. And, although it does have its moments, I’d rather you watched some other TV shows on Netflix – there’s plenty of them.

BlackAF is streaming on Netflix right now.

Disney Will Donate $1 Million to Charity from Face Masks Sale

Disney is using its immense influence on the life of people all around the world and using characters from the plethora of its shows to create and sell face masks. The company will then donate the money to charity.

The face masks will feature characters from big-budget banners like Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars as well as characters from Disney itself. These banners, all under Disney’s ever-growing umbrella, have a very strong influence on the lives of people from all generations.

The company also has also designed one mask that can help cosplayers to dress-up if they dress like Mickey, Pooh, stitch or Marie from The Aristocats.

Disney will release the non-medical, reusable cloth masks in-line with CDC recommendations to wear face-coverings in public brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. They are already up for pre-order on their website. All proceeds until September 30, and up to $1 million, will go to the humanitarian organisation MedShare.

Moreover, Disney will also donate 1 million face masks for free to communities who are underserved and do not have options of protecting themselves in these difficult times.

MedShare is a non-profit organisation that recovers surplus medical supplies and equipments from hospitals and manufacturers across the United States and redistributes them to needy hospitals in developing countries. So, Disney’s initiative is indeed a noble cause which will help not only people in the US, but also those from various other third-world countries.

The masks cost around $19.99 for a pack of four. There are three sizes to choose from – small, medium and large – which will fit children to adults. According to the shopDisney website, the masks should be available by July 15. Moreover, they are supposed to ship out this summer.

Mask
Mask

These Disney masks will feature various fan-favourite characters. These include Anna and Elsa from Frozen; Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story; The Avengers; R2D2 and Baby Yoda. These masks will help people stay safe during the coronavirus pandemic and will also add a touch of fun in a time of stress and tension.

However, the masks cannot be used by medical professionals who are treating patients who are suffering from COVID19.

Edward Park, senior vice president of Disney store and shopDisney mentioned in a statement, “We realize this is a challenging time for families and wearing any type of mask can be daunting. Our hope is that Disney’s cloth face masks featuring some of our most beloved characters will provide comfort to the families, fans and communities that are so important to us.”

Furthermore, Charles Redding, CEO and president of MedShare, released a statement saying, “Disney’s donations will make a tremendous impact in the communities we serve.”

Disney has been very proactive about serving the community during the pandemic. The company has reportedly donated more than 100,000 N95 masks and 175,000 ponchos for hospitals to use protective garments. That’s a great initiative since medical professionals and people, in general, need all the help they can get during these trying and difficult times. As Uncle Ben once said, “With great power comes great responsibility,” and Disney really is living up to its expectations.

Netflix’s Into the Night Review: a Must-Watch Apocalyptic Series

I am a fan of apocalyptical movies/TV shows. Anything that depicts humanity trying to fight for a chance to stay alive, I’m here for it. So, it’s a no-brainer when Netflix came out with Into the Night, I was beyond excited to give it a watch.

Into the Night is an apocalyptic sci-fi drama thriller series (phew!) created by Jason George and starring Pauline Etienne, Laurent Capelluto and Stéfano Cassetti in lead roles, among others. I am familiar with Laurent Capelluto, having first seen him in Netflix’s Black Spot, a supernatural thriller series. I was exceptionally impressed with that one as well, and I’m not surprised by how much I like this one.

Also, an apocalyptic series during a global pandemic? Yes, please.

First things first

Into the Night
Into the Night

Into the Night follows a group of survivors trying to outrun the sun by flying from one place to another, all the while battling impossible circumstances. Because, you see, there’s something wrong with the sun’s rays and it’s killing everyone and everything that it touches.

Seems like a no-win situation, right? How do you outrun the sun? And for how long? The sun is an inevitable part of the Earth and our daily lives. Something so important and necessary, what if one day it just goes against us? Scary to think of that possibility.

Darker than the night

Mathieu and Sylvie
Mathieu and Sylvie

It’s not just the sun that survivors should be afraid of. Something that I found brilliant about Into the Night is how much it tries to portray its characters as grey – which is one of the biggest realities of life. No one is ever black or white – at most, we are just various shades of grey.

Each and every one of the people on the aeroplane has their own demons. Everyone has a dark, humiliating secret. But does that make it their defining character? That is probably for the viewers to decide, or as Laura says to Mathieu, “A man isn’t defined by his mistakes.” Thus, every episode is named after someone from the group and we get to have a glimpse of who they were before everything changed forever.

Judgements and more judgements

Into the Night
Into the Night

Another thing I liked a lot about the series is that the series does not try to tell you what to think about its characters. It doesn’t try to hide anyone’s flaws, neither is anyone’s positive side shown on the viewer’s face. There’s a gentle way of handling the situation and thus you can make out that everyone on that plane is trying their level best to make the decision which will save everyone.

I think one of my most favourite characters on the show is Mathieu. The captain of the plane, from the moment he got to know that they are doomed and on their own, takes it upon himself to save everyone – it is his ship afterall. However, not everything about him is good. Before all of this, he was cheating on his wife with one of the stewardesses. Regretfully, he gets to know too late that she was pregnant with his child. He doesn’t let the news get to him though and keeps on doing his duty.

And that is where the morality lies, who really is a bad guy? (Except Terenzio. He was a bad guy.)

Ray of hope

Horst and Ines
Horst and Ines

The group, in a last attempt to fight for survival, reaches Bulgaria to try and get into a bunker which can hopefully save them from the sun. There are more heart-warming (or breaking, however you see it) revelations here. My best pick was the conversation between Zara and Ayaz regarding the safety of her son. We also get to know here why Zara was desperate to take her son to Moscow – too much was lost for that trip to happen. It’s one of the best moments of Into the Night.

However, there is a bit of hope in all this madness. The group, barring a few, finally reach the bunker and realise that they are at the correct place. There are military there, and while everyone is hugging and greeting each other, the officer tells Sylvie that they might be able to figure out how to defeat the unseen enemy. Sylvie looks hopeful as well.

The sun’s back up

Terenzio
Terenzio

Into the Night is an extremely enjoyable watch. It’s 6 episodes long and the 40-minute runtime of each episode makes the series fly by. The highwire suspense, along with a simple and tight premise makes it an enjoyable watch on a Sunday afternoon. I mean, it’s not like we have anywhere to go, right?

Into the Night is streaming on Netflix now.

Live-Action Reboot for Disney’s Animated Hercules in the Works

Disney is on the roll at the moment with the sheer number of live-action remakes that they are making. The latest announcement is of the animated classic Hercules.

Dave Callaham, the screenwriter for the Expendables franchise and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been hired to write the script. Along with him, Disney has also roped in Joe and Anthony Russo of the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame fame as producers of the project.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the Hercules remake is still in its initial stages. Many things are yet to be decided, including the cast, director and whether it will be a musical like the original. Speculations are also rife around whether the movie will receive a theatrical release or if it will be a Disney+ original.

Disney has previously enjoyed great success when it comes to live-action remakes. These include Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book which were all huge commercial successes. Other than these, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King all crossed the $1 billion mark.

Hercules isn’t the only movie which is being made for a live-action alternative. Other than Mulan which will see a July 24 release, Disney has several other movies in the pipeline. This list includes The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Bambi. Moreover, there is also a 101 Dalmatians prequel called Cruella and Peter Pan & Wendy in the pipeline as well. That’s quite an interesting list which Disney has to tread carefully since their animated versions are quite famous. That means that one wrong move can hamper the studio’s credibility.

There are a few other projects coming to Disney+ as well. The live-action Lady and the Tramp remake was a major win for the streaming service during its launch. Other shows that are coming to the streaming service are a Robin Hood remake, a Lilo & Stitch remake, a Gaston prequel TV series based on the live-action Beauty and the Beast film which starred Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, and a spinoff of the live-action Aladdin.

Originally, Hercules is a 1997 fantasy musical animated film. The story follows Hercules, son of Zeus, who is turned into a half-god, half-mortal by Hades. He ultimately discovers his immortal roots and Zeus directs him to return to Mount Olympus. However, to do that, he must perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy.

The film generated a $252.7 million at the Box Office and was followed by the direct-to-video prequel Hercules: Zero to Hero. This was a pilot to Hercules: The Animated Series, which focused on Hercules during his time at the Prometheus Academy.

Disney has been enjoying quite a good time at the moment. Although its parks are closed and theatre releases have been stalled, Disney+ has seen exceptional growth in the last 5 months. As of April 2020, the streaming service boasts of 50 million subscribers.

Netflix’s Dangerous Lies: A Passable Thriller Without Much to Say

Dropped on Netflix this Thursday, Dangerous Lies is a thriller directed by Michael M. Scott. Starring Camila Mendes and Jessie T. Usher as Katie and Adam in the lead role as a young broke couple facing deadly circumstances.

Unexpected story? I don’t think so!

The thriller was originally named Windfall and would have benefitted from that name. But, alas.

The story starts with Katie and Adam in a diner where Katie works. We learn that Adam is currently studying in order to have better prospects in future and has an education loan to repay later.

Later on, we come across a robbery in the diner and heroically Adam saves the day and shoots the robber. The diner is shut down till investigation. After four months of the incident, Katie is seen working as a caretaker at an old man’s place named Leonard (Elliott Gould) who is rich and alone has no family and friend but is a considerate and loving man.

Netflix's Dangerous Lies: A Passable Thriller Without Much to Say
Elliot Gould as Leonard

When Leonard dies he leaves everything to Katie, inspite of knowing her for 4 months. As weird as it sounds, this twist in the tale was expected and seemed pretty obvious seeing the amount of care he had for Katie. This could be easily understood by the scene where Leonard goes a step ahead and gives her $7000 knowing she was broke and stressed. As a result, it catches the attention of Detective Chesler (Sasha Alexander) but that was supposed to happen, wasn’t it?

The lies!

Leonard sits dead in his attic when Katie comes searching for him for his breakfast. This is where Adam (who secured a job as a gardener) finds a huge amount of money in a chest which when later counted to be $100,000. Though initially, Katie refuses to take the money but with a little push from Adam she agrees. Thereafter, the money is kept in a bank locker and the duo decides not to tell anyone about it. Katie is a good soul, a good human – whenever she is on the verge of doing something wrong her conscience always pulls her back. However, the same cannot be said about her husband.

While this was taking place, Leonard’s attorney, Julia Byron-Kim, unexpectedly turns up to tell the couple about the will. Katie appoints her as her lawyer as well, in case any problem comes up. She seems to be a polite lady. Julia warns Katie about how money changes people, which later turns out to be true.

As the story proceeds, Katie comes across a hidden room in the garage. There, she finds some undeposited cheques in favour of Ethan Doyle, an old gardener who vanished all of a sudden. And not even a minute later she finds his decomposing body and a bag full of diamonds. Here again, Katie decides to call the police but Adam stops her. He reminds her that if they tell the police now, it will only cause problems for them.

The truth…

We come across Hayden (Cam Gigandet) who is stringent on buying Katie’s property. From the first look, you’ll be able to tell that there’s something very fishy going on with him. After a bit of sleuthing, Adam comes across the news that Hayden is not a registered broker. He and his friend (aka Ethan) were involved in a jewellery store robbery. Although Hayden was caught, Ethan got away with the loot. Now, after serving time, all Hayden wants are the diamonds and he can go to any length to get it.

Detective Chesler, on the other hand, believes that Adam is the criminal mastermind behind all the crimes. She confronts Katie with her suspicions who also seems to believe the detective. Devastated, Katie runs to Julia for help to which she agrees and they both head to the locker. However, they are shocked when they see the empty vault – Adam took the money.

Katie’s doubt becomes even stronger. As soon as she gets home, she sees Adam packing and he asks her to pack too. He tells her about the robbery and Hayden and then it comes to her that Hayden killed Leonard by overdose and that’s why one of his medicine bottles was empty.

The finale… Not that convincing

As soon as she agrees to escape and Adam leaves the room, Hayden, who was already in the house, holds her hostage. Hayden demands Adam to tell him about the diamonds but Adam shoots him and in turn, he shoots back. In this whole firing, both of them get injured and Hayden dies on the spot. Katie runs to Adam, who also dies, but not before telling her to check the garden.

Julia arrives at the house and finds Katie crying over the loss of her husband. Though it looks like she is with her in this moment of pain, her intentions become clear when her mask slips. She admits to working with Hayden and is also after the diamond.

Detective Chesler comes in at the opportune moment and saves Katie from Julia who was about to shoot her.

Four months after the incident, Katie is seen gardening and lives in the same house. Detective Chesler pays her a visit to tell her that the diner case is closed and her husband is cleared of all the accusation. A heavily-pregnant Katie is happy to hear the good news. Chesler asks her if she ever found the diamonds but she denies since Adam never told her.

In the last moment of Dangerous Lies, the diamonds are seen cleverly concealed under the dirt while an oblivious Katie turns on the sprinkler and goes inside.

Dangerous Lies isn’t the kind of thriller that’ll keep you at the edge of your seat. The movie is quite predictable and only has a few interesting moments. It gets very monotonous at some points and is passable if you’re looking for a thriller movie to watch.

Dangerous Lies is now streaming on Netflix.

Lionsgate Changes Release Dates of John Wick 4 and Other Movies

Studios around the world are changing and re-assigning dates to various movies in the pipeline. The coronavirus pandemic has pushed movies back – with production and theatre shutdowns and people forced to stay at home. And Lionsgate is also no exception.

Lionsgate has re-dated several movies in its slate including big-budget movies like John Wick 4, Chaos Walking and Spiral.

The next part of the John Wick series, starring Keanu Reeves, will come out on May 27, 2022, instead of May 21, 2021. That’s a full year push for the movie, whose previous instalment, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, raked in $326.7 million at the Box Office.

Instead, Spiral, the Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson starrer SAW spinoff, will be taking over the May 21, 2021, date. Spiral follows Detective Zeke as he and his partner try to catch a killer eerily similar to Jigsaw. However, he gets too entangled in the sadistic mastermind’s morbid games. Spiral was previously supposed to release on May 2020.

Apart from these movies, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard has also been pushed back one full year – from August 28, 2020, to August 28, 2021. The first instalment was a hit for Lionsgate which grossed $180.7 million worldwide. The Ryan Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson-Salma Hayek starrer will encounter Paramount’s Paw Petrol on its new release date.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, starring Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo and Jamie Dornan will also move from July 31, 2020, to July 16, 2021. It will go against Sony’s Uncharted and Warner Bros.’ Space Jam 2.

Other movies getting new release dates include The Asset (April 23, 2021) starring Michael Keaton and Maggie Q, American Underdog (December 10, 2021) and The Devil’s Light (January 8, 2021).

There are, however, a few movies on Lionsgate’s slate that are staying for a 2020 release. That includes Fatale, the Hilary Swank thriller. Its date has been moved from June 19 to October 30 where it won’t encounter any other movies.

Another 2020 release would be the sci-fi movie Voyagers starring Tye Sheridan and Lily Rose-Depp. The movie will now release on November 25 and encounter MGM’s No Time to Die and Sony/Tri-Star’s The Happiest Season.

Other movies from Lionsgate that are not budging from their 2021 release dates are The Devil’s Light (January 8), Chaos Walking (January 22) and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (March 19). Sarah Paulson starrer Run and Jesus Revolution are yet to receive a release date.

The earliest Lionsgate title that will hit the theatres (considering if things do get better) is Antebellum, which is scheduled to come out on August 21. The movie, starring Janelle Monáe, Gabourey Sidibe and Jena Malone, follows an author who finds herself in a horrifying reality and must figure out the mystery behind it.

On the other hand, for Warner Bros., the earliest release is Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on July 17 followed by Disney’s Mulan on July 24.

Damon Wolf, CMO and head of global distribution, said in a statement, “As audiences from around the world head back to theatres, most will return feeling that specialness that only the traditional theatrical experience can offer. Lionsgate is thrilled to present such a wide variety of films with many more to come.”

Mrs Serial Killer Review: A Bland Attempt at a Thriller

Netflix movies are becoming lazier by the day (remember Drive? That was something), and I, honestly, am so done with it. I was really intrigued by the trailer of Mrs Serial Killer – rich colours, Manoj Bajpayee and an interesting premise.

Oh boy, was my analysis wrong.

Twists and turns… Not really

I have so many questions about Mrs Serial Killer. However, we’ll get into that in a bit. Let’s talk about the story first.

Mrs Serial Killer follows Sona, who is married to Mrityunjoy, a Bengali doctor. They share a loving relationship, which is multiplied when Sona gets pregnant. However, there is also a serial killer on the loose who is murdering unmarried pregnant women in brutal ways.

Here comes Imran, a police officer who is also Sona’s ex, who is trying to catch the serial killer. He takes Mrityunjoy’s things from his house and apparently frames him for the murders. After this, Sona takes it upon herself to free her husband and abducts her neighbour, who is a kunwari pregnant girl, Anushka.

The idea here is to make the court believe that the killer is still out there, and thus, they have to let Mrityunjoy go. Miraculously, that works, although the body isn’t that of Anushka. I don’t know how the coroner didn’t get to know that after conducting an autopsy, but I think I am expecting too much here.

However, in the film’s big revelation, we get to know that Mrityunjoy is, indeed, the killer. But alas, the big reveal was so predictable that you could see it from a mile away.

Slow slowwww

That brings me to the fact that this movie is really damn slow. For a thriller, it is boring and plain annoying at times. The dead bodies reminded me of Hannibal, the NBC series starring Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen. No, don’t get me wrong. It obviously wasn’t showcased THAT well, but the references were there.

Moreover, no one really knows what is going on, and some characters seem to forget that they are in a movie, and thus, have to act. There are plenty of unnecessary scenes which dragged the movie on, and you tend to skip ahead frequently.

Now, when the “interesting” parts come along, they aren’t really as action-packed to make up for the annoying bits. Moreover, there are some very odd directional and stylistic choices which, honestly, did nothing for the scene or the movie.

I’ll also add here that the revelation behind Mrityunjoy’s mental instability is so lacklustre. It is something that we have heard time and again, and we are bored with it. And that is also why it lacks the punch which should have made this scene the defining part of the entire movie.

In addition to this, there is some unnecessary swearing throughout the movie, which is just. No. It’s cringey and very uncomfortable to hear – especially because it is not at all necessary.

To cast or not to cast?

I am still quite unclear about why Jacqueline Fernandez was cast for this role. The whole movie rests on her shoulders, yet she is not a capable actor to emote the emotions that are expected from a potential serial killer. She’s bland and stiff, and her sadness and despair are unconvincing. The supporting cast is as bad as the lead actress. You can make out that everyone is trying very hard to salvage some shred of acting, but my god, do they fail. The most annoying character for me was probably Anushka’s boyfriend – not only is he a jerk, but his acting is terrible.

The only saving graces were Manoj Bajpayee and Mohit Raina. They tried to make something out of a movie that had everything going against it. Bajpayee’s Mrityunjoy is a maniacal serial killer, and the actor does well to showcase the various facets of the character. Raina, as the lovelorn, revenge-seeking Imran, is commendable as well.

Characters who don’t watch movies

You know, I always wonder if characters in movies watch movies? Like, are they deliberately written to be dumb, or is there something that I am missing? The last scene of the movie is a showdown between Mrityunjoy, Imran and Sona. Imran stabs Mrityunjoy, who in turn stabs Sona. Imran thinks that Mrityunjoy is dead; however, if you have ever watched a movie in your life, you’d know that a stab in the back with a scalpel does not kill anyone.

And even if you didn’t know that, why does the inspector not know that the serial killer he thought to be dead, is, infact not dead? How is it possible that there were no police posted there? Why did the doctor not give him this news? I don’t know, and honestly, neither will you.

Which brings me to the question: did anyone notice that the background music throughout the movie is uncannily similar to Roshni Se from Asoka? Or is that just me?

Mrs Serial Killer is streaming on Netflix right now.
