INOX is Disappointed on Online Release of Movies

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with itself an unbearably long lockdown. Amidst this, online platforms have become the first choice of filmmakers to release their projects. A lot of upcoming Bollywood movies are going to be released on OTT platforms, reported Filmfare.

The recent situation has brought an eclipse to cinema and releases. Therefore, recently, Shoojit Sircar announced the release of his film Gulabo Sitabo, starring Ayushman Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan, on Amazon Prime. Along with this, there are 7 more films that will possibly see an online release.

This was enough to disappoint INOX as they said, ‘This is breaking our partnership.’

The argument continued with various supporters and critics. Kunal Kohli’s reply to the whole matter added fuel to the fire.

Kamal Gianchandani, CEO, PVR Pictures released a statement saying, “We are disappointed with some of our producers deciding to go straight to the streaming platform/s. We were hoping that the producers would accede to our request to hold back their film’s release till cinemas reopen.”

While the disappointment of distributors in understandable, directors don’t have much of a choice as a lot of things are dependent on the release of a project.

Netflix to Stream Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s Ball and Chain

Netflix will release Ball and Chain starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The superhero film is an adaptation of Scott Lobdell’s comic book series from the 1990s. Emily.V. Gordon, who has received an Oscar nomination for The Big Sick (2017) has been assigned to be the scriptwriter. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt just finished shooting Disney’s Jungle Cruise which is expected to release next year. Johnson and Blunt in Ball and Chain play a couple having troubles in their marriage, but also have superpowers which only work when both of them are together.

Dwayne Johnson’s production house Seven Bucks is set to produce the film. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt have decided to co-produce the film along with Dany Garcia and her brother, Hiram Garcia.

Netflix to Stream Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s Ball and Chain

Before Netflix acquired the film, it was reported that many studios were interested in releasing the film. Dwayne Johnson in an interview said, “One of our main initiatives at Seven Bucks is to continue to find the best platforms to tell stories that entertain and inspire on a global scale,” and also that Netflix would be the “perfect partner” which could successfully deliver this superhero/romantic comedy globally. Johnson shared this news on his Instagram handle as well, where he captioned the same.

Jungle Cruise was the first movie where the duo paired up, which was expected to be released in the summers this year, due to the pandemic the release has been postponed to next year. Johnson earlier teamed up with Netflix for Red Notice, which is an action-comedy thriller with Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. The film’s shooting has been suspended for the time being because of the pandemic. Emily Blunt’s A Quiet Place II is awaiting release as well, fans are eagerly looking forward to the sequel directed by Blunt’s husband John Krasinski. The release has been pushed back owing to the Covid-19 scare.

The popularity of OTT services have grown substantially of late, however, Netflix has remained the clear pacesetter among other streaming services. Theatre chains have been insecure as films are bypassing the traditional theatrical route to directly stream on various OTT services. Netflix post the lockdown has especially released major movies for its audience.

Movies like Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth has performed exceptionally well globally along with other Netflix Originals that the streaming giant has released. Top performers include 6 Underground, featuring Ryan Reynolds; Triple Frontier, starring Ben Affleck and Charlie Hunam; and top favourites also include Roma, The Irishman and Marriage Story.

Netflix’s ‘The Wrong Missy’ and The Same Old Love Formula

Directed by Tyler Spindel, The Wrong Missy dropped on Netflix on May 13th. This romantic comedy starring Lauren Lapkus and David Spade follows a basic storyline of love between two opposites.

The Missy’s..

The movie starts with Tim (David Spade) going on a blind date with a woman named Melissa aka Missy (Lauren Lapkus.) And as expected, the date is pretty horrible and Tim tries to escape. Classic jumping out of the window trick and all that! The date is done and dusted. And that’s obvious as we can see how horrified Tim was as he didn’t date for three months after that.

Later, Tim meets a beautiful blonde girl at the airport, Melissa (Molly Sims) as they crash into each other (love at first sight it is). They pick up their bags and go off to their destination then they realize they have switched their bags and therefore, they meet again. The story is stale and predictable.

Nate (Nick Swardson,) the closest friend of Tim and the HR representative of the company plays an amazing role. He constantly spies on Tim and gives out his weird and funny advice to him. But things take a turn when he advises Tim to invite Melissa to the Corporate Retreat.

Ohh, the mixup!!

Tim manages to text Missy instead of Melissa and he does not realize this until the day they are supposed to meet. Noob mistake, Tim. As Missy and Tim reach their destination, all hell breaks loose as Missy was just being Missy. The whole sequence is funny yet overwhelming to watch. What happens later is what I expected from the very start. Tim starts falling in love with Missy, who doesn’t know that she wasn’t supposed to be there.

The film features a ‘threesome’ scene too and it does not include any nudity. Infact, the scene is weirdly hilarious.

Netflix's 'The Wrong Missy' and The Same Old Love Formula
THE WRONG MISSY, 2020 Lauren Lapkus as Missy and Rob Schneider as Komante in The Wrong Missy.

The character of Missy is built in a way that she creates chaos wherever she goes. Missy is a psychic, hypnotist, paramedic, therapist and what not… basically, a jack of all trades, but a loud and unmannered person. She even tries to seduce Tim in front of his whole company. She loves Tim and it’s beautiful but it’s just not the love Tim wants at the moment. He wants to get rid of her as soon as he can. When finally Tim meets Melissa and he realizes she isn’t what he wants – it’s too late. But is Tim really ready for all the Missy madness yet?

Love? The winner.

Netflix's 'The Wrong Missy' and The Same Old Love Formula
Lauren Lapkus and David Spade in The Wrong Missy

The whole drama of Missy realizing that she wasn’t the one supposed to be there and leaving Tim behind and him restlessly waiting for her to talk is just boring. Sooner or later, Missy and Tim meet. They talk, he apologizes and hurrays! They reunite… The story is boring and somewhere offensive too. I can’t deny the minuscule of a laugh this movie brought but it wasn’t worth all the time. Tim accepted her when he thought she is what he needs and that he needs to be free. Otherwise, the whole time he either wished she was dead or just gone.

Love in The Wrong Missy is directionless and unwanted throughout till the last few minutes. It’s one hell of a roller coaster you wouldn’t want to ride. The film fails to portray the feeling of love.

It’s not a must-watch, there’s nothing you’ll miss without watching this.

The Wrong Missy is streaming on Netflix.

Mysskin’s Psycho Review: More Than an Average Thriller

Psycho is a Tamil-language psychological thriller movie that came out in January 2020. Now, I’ve heard a lot of good things about this movie so expectations were pretty high. The movie is directed by Mysskin and stars Udhayanidhi Stalin, Nithya Menen, Aditi Rao Hydari, Ram, and debutant Rajkumar Pitchumani in the lead roles.

Starting off with a bang

Psycho starts off with a bang. No, seriously. It starts off with a beheading and I am here for it. Angulimala, our psychotic serial killer in the movie, is a disturbed individual who murders women and beheads them. He then keeps the heads as trophies while displaying the rest of the bodies in secluded areas. We also have Gautham who is a blind musician, obviously. He is in love with Dagini, the ever-beautiful Aditi Rao Hydari. In a twist of fate, Angulimala abducts Dagini and thus begins the cat-and-mouse game between the duo.

The premise is pretty fun and thrilling and there’s a lot that could’ve been done. But, inspite of the generally positive reviews, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.

There are other problems

Psycho - Dead Girl

There’s a trope in regional language movies that I absolutely hate. You absolutely cannot have someone who loves you who is not a stalker. Psycho is no different. Gautham loves Dagini and thus, naturally, he thinks it’s appropriate to stalk her. She insists time and again to leave her alone, but he does not deem it necessary to listen to her. Because he loves her, yaar! Disturbing behaviours are thus acceptable. People reprimand Dagini because she tells his stalker to get lost. But no one points out how problematic his behaviour is. There’s a serial killer on the loose, but here I am, talking about a stalker. Rings a few bells.

No seriously, lots of problems

Psycho - Angulimala

I did, however, like the fact that the Pyscho talked about how there are a lot of factor that can make people lose their mental balance. That does not excuse murdering people though, but not every person is born a killer. Angulimala is an orphan who was abused as a kid, first by his teacher and then a police officer. A child through that for years is an absolutely horrendous thought and maybe somewhere or the other it does make you question about how children are brought up in the world. It also points you towards the fact that there are bigger demons out there who do worse things in this world but still get to get away with it. Again, it does not excuse murdering people in any way, but it makes you think.

A theme too many

Aditi Rao Hydari
Dagini

Now, even though I did like some of the themes of Psycho, there were a lot of problematic areas as well. There’s this humorous angle scattered all over that does not really vibe with the overall movie. The jokes are also pretty stupid and don’t make you laugh – it just makes you shift uncomfortably in your seat. There are quite a few questionable choices that the characters make that are infuriating. Rajanayakam’s odd choice of chasing a deranged killer and then leaving the car and going after him on a deserted road is a lame attempt at imbibing some drama. There’s a lot going on anyway, there’s no need to kill off side characters for the sake of it.

Shining example

Angulimala
Angulimala

However, it was Rajkumar Pitchumani’s brilliant performance as Angulimala, the psychotic killer, that was the shining star of Psycho. He is very believable as the ruthless murderer with a very tragic past. At the fag end of the movie you will probably feel bad for the child who was treated terribly by the people he trusted.

Aditi Rao Hydari delivers a good performance as well. I couldn’t get my eyes off of her, even when she was dirty and covered in blood in a murderer’s secret lair. Nithya Menen as the quadriplegic Kamala delivers a believable performance as well. You can sense her anger and frustration but also sense her determination even in the difficult situation she is in.

Apart from the acting, the practical effects are believable and nice and do not look tacky. Plus the tone and the background music does make it an eerie watch.

Ending note

Gautham
Gautham

Mysskin’s Angulimala, is the protagonist of Pyscho. He has a voice and, most importantly, a cause, behind his actions. Even though the film wasn’t as brilliant a thriller as I had expected it to be, it did leave me thinking about all that is wrong with this world, and how we fit into it.

Also, the last scene with Angulimala is too goofy an ending for such a high-impact, serious movie.

Psycho is streaming right now on Netflix.

Avatar 2 Won’t be Delayed Due to COVID-19: James Cameron

Avatar was a phenomenon that released in 2009 and broke all Box Office records. Up until 2019, it was at number one position, till Avengers: Endgame came along. The beautiful performance capture, adept CGI work and the 3D technology made it one of the most gorgeous and realistic movies of that time. Thus, when James Cameron decided to release Avatar 2, it was a treat for movie buffs all around.

However, Avatar 2’s release, which was supposed to be on 17 December 2021 has been under a lot of speculation with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic. With Hollywood practically shutting down and studios having to push their movies back, it is a bad time for creators and fans.

But Cameron is still confident that his film will be able to stick with its 2021 release date.

“I want to get back to work on Avatar, which right now we’re not allowed to do under state emergency laws or rules. So, it’s all on hold right now,” Cameron said, speaking to Empire for the new Celebration Of Cinema issue.

Filming was scheduled to take place in New Zealand but was stopped in its tracks when travelling became too risky.

“We were about to shoot down in New Zealand, so that got pushed. We’re trying to get back to it as quick as we can,” he said. However, even with such grave problems in his tracks, the filmmaker wishes to continue with the shooting of Avatar 2 and finish it on time.

“On the bright side, New Zealand seems to have been very effective in controlling the virus and their goal is not mitigation, but eradication, which they believe that they can do with aggressive contact tracing and testing,” he said, adding: “So there’s a very good chance that our shoot might be delayed a couple of months, but we can still do it. So that’s good news.”

It is to be noted here that, thanks to the advent of technology, the work on the film has not stopped. Everyone at Weta Digital and Lightstorm are still working from home as much as possible in order to finish the movie on time. “But my work is on the stage doing the virtual cameras and so on, so I can do a bit of editing, but it’s not great for me,” Cameron said.

Avatar 2 takes place 12 years after the first movie. Jake Sully has now joined the Na’vi and has formed a family with Neytiri. The tribe is wandering across Pandora and forming new alliances. However, the good times come to an end when the R.D.A. decide to invade Pandora once more to finish what they started. Avatar 2 will see Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles from the first movie. It will also have some of the other older members back for the second movie.

The first Avatar movie was one of the biggest hits of 2009 and broke Titanic’s record. With a budget of $237 million, the film grossed $2.79 billion at the box office. It won the Academy Awards 2010 for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects and a host of other awards.

Netflix’s ‘Have a Good Trip’ Is Just About Celebrities and Acid Trips

Directed by Donick Cary, Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics released on May 11 on Netflix. It is a documentary about stoned celebrity experiences and a small history lesson on the use of drugs by the government and the wider use of this substance.

The movie is star-studded. It features actors like A$AP Rocky, Paul Scheer, Rosie Perez, Sting, Carrie Fisher, Deepak Chopra, Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman and others. They all share their stories of intoxication with a healthy mix of bad and good trips.

Just for fun? Or infotainment?

Netflix's 'Have a Good Trip' Is Just About Celebrities and Acid Trips

Have a Good Trip mainly deals with anecdotes of use of hallucinogenic drugs by stars, singers and writers. It does not provide any proper “drug education” but instead talks about bad trip (BT) and good trip (GT). It seems as if all the celebrities are trying to tell the viewers how to have a good trip with nearly no talk about what to do when it all goes downhill or how to get over the trip.

“If you’re doing drugs the right way, you can’t tell an orderly story.” – Carrie Fisher

Have a Good Trip is a harmless time-pass flick, it contains animated reenactments of the celebs and honestly, they are pretty fun to watch. It seems as if LSD and acid are easy drugs and you get over with it without any after-effects – which is clearly not the case. It features small clippings telling people about the drugs. However, it does not have any information for future reference. In some way or the other, it glorifies and eases the whole acid use.

“I don’t think psychedelics are the answers to the world’s problems.” – Sting

Netflix's 'Have a Good Trip' Is Just About Celebrities and Acid Trips
reenactment of Anthony Bourdain’s acid experience in ‘Have a Good Trip’

Is LSD the answer?

As easy and flowy it may seem by listening to these anecdotes, it’s not always all trees and grass talking to you, understanding mortality or just enjoying the trip etc. LSD is known to have many side effects and it depends on the person and the dosage.

“Its not for everybody.” – A$ap Rocky

Netflix's 'Have a Good Trip' Is Just About Celebrities and Acid Trips

Mushroom has been legalized in few states across the US as it helps to treat various mental illnesses like PTSD, depression etc. Quite a trip, isn’t it? Despite what Carrie Fisher says about an orderly story. Weirdly, all the celebrities very clearly remembered their first trips and what happened after. They give out some valuable advice for your first or any number of trips you experience:

  1. Don’t drive on acid. The roads get weird and wild.
  2. Don’t look in the mirror on acid. You might trigger your insecurities.
  3. Don’t do acid with unknown people or anyone who even pretends to be your friend. They can give you bad trips!
  4. Don’t go to McDonald’s. Just don’t.

The conclusion…

Have-a-Good-Trip

After hearing all the experiences, what we can take with us is that LSD opens your horizon to new experiences. It connects you to an alternate reality. You value everything a bit more during the hallucination because you realize you are a part of the larger picture. But saying that it’s all flowers and clouds would be wrong.

LSD and Mushroom do not only serve as hallucinogenic drugs but, over years of research, are now counted as therapeutic drugs too. Though it feels like missing out on these is missing out on valuable life experiences, it isn’t. And most importantly, the portrayal of drug and its effects in Hollywood films is unreal as said by most of the celebrities. So, don’t trust them.

“I took acid once. Maybe even didn’t need to. Probably could have just watched this documentary.” – Ben Stiller

Well, it wouldn’t have helped much Ben, but it’s ok.

Have a Good Trip is now streaming on Netflix.

Amazon’s Blow the Man Down: Do You Really Know Your Loved Ones?

Blow the Man Down is a 2020 thriller that’s dark and dreary. It is also a movie which has a predominantly woman-centric cast. The film had its world premiere in the Tribeca Film Festival, 2019, and was released March 20 this year on Amazon Prime Video.

Now, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Thrillers and/or horrors don’t need jump-scares. I am a fan of slow-burns, films that take its time to dish out the scares. However, every moment of this movie is filled with this sense of dread, like, if you turn this corner, there’s someone waiting for you whom you don’t want to meet.

This movie does exactly that.

A death in the town

Blow the Man Down starts off with a scene of assault – a man chases a woman down the snow and tackles her while a woman watches from the window of a house.

We cut to Priscilla and Mary Beth Connolly, who live in the small port town of Easter Cove, Maine. Their mother just died and it’s a terrible time for them both. However, as small towns tend to go, her mother’s friends are all there for her to get the duo through. It’s kind of a heart-warming moment, considering how affectionate the three are to them. They have all lost someone close to them – and it’s evident when the three women reminisce about their departed friend.

However, all is not well. And this fond, albeit sad, time is cut short when Mary Beth, the younger of the two sisters, gets to know that they are going to lose their house.

One mistake too many

Amazon's Blow the Man Down: Do You Really Know Your Loved Ones?
Priscilla and Mary Beth

The revelation makes her angry, especially because Priscilla didn’t tell her anything. She leaves to drown her sorrow in a pub where she meets Gorski. One thing leads to another and in a drunken haze, Mary Beth kills Gorski. This is where things start to go down for the sisters in Blow the Man Down.

Being the older sister, Priscilla tries to get rid of the evidence, but alas leaves her knife behind in the process. It’s an absolute mess. However, there are scenes in this horrible tragedy which has moments of humour. The fact that Mary Beth kills Gorski with a harpoon (of all things) and Priscilla’s disbelief after hearing it made me laugh, surprisingly.

New England noir

blow the man down
Priscilla and Mary Beth

Directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy have really tried to create a tight, slow-burn with Blow the Man Down which tries to work with a lot of different strings. Although most of those strings are connected somewhere or the other, those strings are all of different lengths. There are a lot of things going on, different plots all connected to one person. Well, two.

The whole movie is focused on ambiguity. There’s no good or bad person here. People whom you think to be great, end up cutting people open. But that doesn’t necessarily make them terrible people. It’s a reflection of what people will do when pushed to the edge and how much people are willing to sacrifice to save their loved ones. Human beings are grey – and there’s no point in thinking otherwise.

A moral dilemma

BLOW THE MAN DOWN
Priscilla and Mary Beth with Enid

Now, the strings I was talking about previously, there’s one string that is longer than the rest. And that’s Margo Martindale’s Enid. She runs a brothel in the town and people are not happy with it, especially her (ex) friends Susie, Gail and Doreen. However, the men seem to be oblivious to the problems that are prevalent in the town due to Enid’s business.

Things come to a head in Blow the Man Down when one of the girls turns up dead. Susie and the others are sympathetic and ask Enid to close the brothel down. However, Enid refuses. it’s sad when you realise the woman doesn’t give a damn about anyone around her. That is made apparent when she asks the Connolly sisters to start working for her – even though their mother was one of her best friends. Margo Martindale is splendid as Enid. I hated her character with every fibre of my being – and that says a lot about how well Margo portrays her.

All’s well that ends well

Enid and Alexis
Enid and Alexis

Blow the Man Down climaxes with Enid’s death. No one gets to know about what the Connolly sisters have done, save for Susie, Gail, Doreen and Justin. The last scene is probably one of my most favourite scenes in a movie ever. It shows how much family and friends matter in your life and how they will be with you through thick and thin.

And also that women get shit done.

Blow the Man Down is an entertaining watch on Amazon Prime if you’re at home in isolation, as most of us are. I do agree that the strings could have been tied a wee bit tighter, but I don’t have any major problems with the story. The acting is brilliant and the eeriness of Easter Cove, Maine, is evident from the first scene. There’s a lot of secrets to uncover in the movie – as small towns usually do.

Blow the Man Down is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy Set to Make Stephen King’s Revival

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan, who is very much familiar with Stephen King’s work, is at it again – he is writing an adaptation for King’s book Revival for Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are taking care of the film adaptation of the 2014 book. The duo was responsible for last year’s Doctor Sleep as well.

Mike Flanagan has somewhat gained cult status when it comes to horror content. Almost all of his previous movies like Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Gerald’s Game have been very successful at keeping audiences entertained throughout and were commercial successes. Although Doctor Sleep wasn’t that big with horror enthusiasts, it wasn’t entirely a failure. The movie made $72.3 million on a budget of $45 million. However, the critical reception was not so favourable and thus any hopes for further movies were dashed.

Doctor Sleep
Ewan McGregor in Doctor Sleep

Doctor Sleep was a sequel to King’s 1977 book The Shining. Stanley Kubrick had made a movie adaption in 1980. Although reviews were unfavourable at the time, the film is now regarded as one of the greatest and most influential horror movies ever made. In 2018, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

Clearly, Flanagan had some big shoes to fill with Doctor Sleep.

With Revival, Flanagan is tasked with writing the script with an option to direct as well. Flanagan and Macy will produce the film through the pair’s Intrepid Pictures.

Revival follows the relationship between a grief-stricken faith-healer Jacobs whose dubious experiments pull him and heroin-addicted musician Jamie into the world of Lovecraftian horror.

Fault in Our Stars filmmaker Josh Boone had previously tried to adopt Revival but that fell through. Boone’s New Mutant movie continues to stay in limbo without any final release date.

Notably, Flanagan and Macy were behind the critically acclaimed 2018 Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House. The series received acclaim for its acting, direction and production values, especially for its child actors and beautiful long shots. They are supposed to come out with a sequel to the series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, in 2020, although it will follow a different story. The second season is based on the 1989 novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House

Revival will be the third project for the team after Doctor Sleep and the 2017 Netflix movie Gerald’s Game.

Intrepid is developing an adaptation of The Midnight Club at the moment. The 1994 movie by Christopher Pike follows a group of five young men and women living in Rotterdam Home, a hospice for children with terminal illnesses. One night they make a pact that whoever dies first has to contact the rest of them.

Stephen King’s novels have been a talk of Hollywood since 2017’s It came out and became a commercial success. The film, directed by Andy Muschietti, was hailed for its brilliant and believable child performances along with direction, cinematography and musical score. The movie grossed $701.8 million on a budget of $35 million.

Disney Plus is Planning a National Treasure Series for the Service

All of our favourite movie National Treasure is all set to make a comeback, thanks to Disney. The company has been really pushing it to bring out different kinds of content, especially things from the past. Thus, we now have a National Treasure movie and TV series in the works at Disney+.

Producer for the original National Treasure and its sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Jerry Bruckheimer revealed the news in an interview with Collider.

Ben, Abigail and Riley
Ben, Abigail and Riley

“We’re certainly working on one [‘National Treasure’] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen,” Bruckheimer said. “Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another ‘National Treasure,’ but they’re both very active … The one for Disney Plus is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast.”

As mentioned above, Disney+ has really been into creating adaptations of well-regarded film series for the service. Nation Treasure will join the likes of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Home Alone, whose reboots will be coming to Disney+ in the near future. Apart from this, the streamer already has multiple Star Wars projects in the pipeline. These include a series about Obi-Wan Kenobi, one about Cassian Andor, and a second season of The Mandalorian. Apart from these, there are multiple Marvel series coming as well, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki.

The news for the TV series comes just three months after Bruckheimer and Disney announced that they were making National Treasure 3. Join the team will be screenwriter Chris Bremner who will be writing the script for the sequel.

National Treasure
National Treasure

Although not much is known about the series as Bruckheimer did not go into too many details, the mention of a younger cast does make it clear that Disney might want to rope in younger audiences for the National Treasure franchise.

Moreover, both the film and series seem to be in the early stages of production at the moment. Bruckheimer said, “The film version is being written right now, and the television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and we have an outline of the future episodes.” That does give hope to the fans of the franchise.

Ben
Nicholas Cage as Ben

The original National Treasure film starred Nicholas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian, cryptologist and treasure hunter. He goes on a quest to find a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers during the Revolutionary War. Along with him, the movie also starred Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel. The second film focused on Benjamin trying to clear his ancestor’s name who was implicated in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Both the films were highly successful and made $804.9 million at the Box Office on a budget of $230 million.

However, it is not yet clear as to who the creators are thinking of casting for the third instalment of the National Treasure franchise. On the other hand, Bruckheimer has stated that it would be the same cast. That remains to be seen as more information regarding the movie turns up.

Netflix’s Becoming Review: A Story About Michelle Obama and Her Life

“Your story is what you have, what you will always have. It is something to own.” – Michelle Obama

Becoming is a memoir of the former United States First Lady, Michelle Obama. The movie features a rare and intimate look in the life of Mrs Obama. “This is totally me, unplugged, for the first time,“ she says.

The journey

Netflix's Becoming Review: A Story About Michelle Obama and Her Life

Michelle Obama has always been an inspiration to people of her community and to anyone who dares to dream higher than what society allows. Her journey from just a citizen to the First Lady is remarkable. She talks about how it was difficult for her to adapt to the sudden change. She attributes her confidence to her parents, who allowed her to ask questions and always made her feel visible. “We can’t afford to wait for the world to be equal to start feeling seen,” she says.

Becoming carries no big revelations. Nothing you haven’t heard and seen before. Through small footages of her book tour across countries and student interaction, we come across Mrs Obama’s life and experiences. Her off-stage preparations and the memories of her childhood, the warmth with which she carries her relations with everyone is beautiful.

She openly talks about the racial discrimination she faced throughout her life. Whether it was in her neighbourhood, school, workplace or being the First Lady. The honour of being the first black family to occupy the White House was a big responsibility. However, the racial stigma never left her side. Even their love was associated with the race they belonged to. She recalls that people expected her and Barack to fall in love as they belonged to the same race. They said, “You two love each other, don’t you? You’re black, he’s black. This will be great.” However, the way she overcame everything is commendable and empowering.

“I am coming down from the mountaintop to tell every person that is poor and working-class and has been told, regardless of the colour of your skin, that you don’t belong, don’t listen to them.” – Michelle Obama

Everything comes at a cost. No matter how appealing the position of the First Lady looks from the outside, it is a difficult place to be. She was called “an angry black woman” and everything she said was criticized and read between the lines.

When she left the White House, after 8 years of serving her country, she could not shed a tear in public because of the misinterpretations that may follow.  It was an emotional moment but she couldn’t let her guard down. She also talks about politics and the difficulties they faced. She says:

– “It wasn’t just in this election, but every midterm. Every time Barack didn’t get the Congress he needed, that was because our folks didn’t show up.”

–“After all that work, they just couldn’t be bothered to vote at all.“

Along with all the criticism and difficulties came immense love and support from people too. After all, the Obamas are praiseworthy. The love she gets from people while she signs their copies of the book is heartfelt and pure. She says, “those eight years weren’t for nothing.”

Becoming is in no way is an attack on Trump and is said to be ‘bland’ by many critics. It’s about Michelle and her journey. She is a proud mother and has raised her children in ways I didn’t expect. Despite all the luxuries, she taught her girls to be self-dependent. She does not identify herself just as the former First Lady, she is more than that. She says that her journey started way before anyone knew her.

Towards the end, there is an appearance of Mr. Barack Obama, where he is seen supporting her wife in her venture and he says “You’re a good storyteller” and honestly, I can’t deny.

Becoming is one of the best things I’ve seen in 2020. It isn’t exactly ‘candid’ but can it ever be? The personality of Michelle Obama comes up as kind and loving and headstrong which is inspiring.
