Our Times Review

Nora and Hector begin with a loving relationship and a burning passion for their project, which makes them experiment with their Time Machine. From the very beginning, we get a healthy dose of casual sexism that was very apparent in the 1960s, where the success of an educated woman was not looked upon with great admiration. This is exactly what Nora faces on a day-to-day basis in her time. It is apparent that her time was made to serve the interest of a man, and when that situation changes in 2025, it is no wonder that Hector is the one who suffers the most.
At first, they both enjoy the future, where everything is different and uncomfortable, but extremely developed. 2025 has its charms like the internet, the phone, the subway and the laptops that will manage to tempt anyone who’s from the past. However, that should not stop Nora and Hector from going back to their time as soon as possible. This is also why Nora and Hector work relentlessly with a bunch of very brilliant scientists to achieve their goal when they indeed time travel to 2025.

Nora definitely enjoys all the newly found freedom a woman has in the future rather than the constrictive society that was her reality. Not only that, but all the things that she ever wanted in her life, like speaking at a conference which she would not have been able to do as a woman previously, also became a reality. However, these things are the ones that start to create a visible strain in Hector and Nora’s relationship.
Yes, it is true that Hector never participated in the sexism that Nora faced in any way or form. He also did not treat her like she was less than him, but at the same time, he never helped her out or spoke against the kind of behaviour she was facing. He always had a nonchalant attitude about everything and did not have the courage to speak up against the prejudice and discrimination Nora faced. Not only that, but when Hector gets the same kind of treatment in 2025, he is quick to victimise himself and make things worse for himself by not understanding the gravity of the situation. This was not because he was evil, but only because that is how his reality raised him.

Needless to say, things do not go very well for the couple from then on. However, we do not get a bad ending, and I actually love how they managed to achieve a middle ground where none of the characters needed to settle for anything less than what they wanted. The actors also do a good job of portraying the conflicted characters who do not really know how to handle all the change.
Verdict

While the film is an enjoyable watch, the writing doesn’t quite stand out. The plot unfolds in a fairly predictable manner, offering few surprises or truly original moments. It works well as a light sci-fi entertainer and has the charm of a decent one-time watch. However, it lacks the innovation or depth one might hope for from the sci-fi genre.
