Oshi No Ko Episode 7 Review: The Girl You Love

Aqua has managed to fulfil at least some of what he set out to do in Oshi No Ko Episode 7– he managed to save the life of someone who was tormented by the entertainment industry. Let’s see what happened after in this review!

Oshi No Ko Episode 7 Overview

Oshi No Ko Episode 7 Title

Oshi No Ko, or My Star, is a drama and supernatural anime based on a manga written by Aka Akasaka, who also wrote Kaguya-sama Love Is War and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. The anime adaptation is being directed by Daisuke Hiramaki, who has directed shows like Selection Project and Koisuru Asteroid in the past, alongside being a part of huge productions such as Bunny Girl Senpai and Naruto.

The series is being brought into the medium of anime by studio Doga Kobo, a relatively new studio which has been behind shows like Himotou Umaru-chan and Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie. This episode is also referred to as My Star Episode 7. Click here to read the review of the previous episode!

Oshi No Ko Episode Review- Buzz

Crying Akane Oshi No Ko Episode 7

The great Garth Marengi once said- “I know writers who use subtext, and they’re all cowards.”. Now, that quote might be a part of a mockumentary intended to parody the profession of writing, but Oshi no Ko has seemingly taken it a little too close to the heart. The show is almost the least subtle take on the evils of our current standards for celebrity and media, but it doesn’t mean that it lacks merit. No subtlety doesn’t mean no nuance, after all. There is much to discuss in this episode, but there’s just one issue – we already talked about half of it in the last review.

The first five minutes of this episode were essentially the same discussion we had about shows like the ones portrayed in the show and their real-life dangers. The show even mentioned deaths, like I did, just to paint an extremely severe picture of an issue that can often be cast aside. Some of us can be extraordinarily cruel to people we think are below or above us, and the show had a decent take on this aspect. It was also surprising that the character survived, for we have already seen many deaths in the show.

Love Actually Oshi No Ko Episode 7

Akane Kurokawa wasn’t a very interesting personality, but she didn’t deserve what happened to her. No one deserves this. Her dying would have been an absolute heartbreak, but the show recognised that much better stories could be told with having another talented actor who has a lot to be thankful to Aqua around. Speaking of Aqua, his idea to help Akane get reintroduced into the world was logical and made sense, even though it wasn’t particularly entertaining to watch. Aqua made perfect use of all the talent that was in the show, including his own.

However, from what appeared to be a fairly average episode, there emerged a plotline that was among the most interesting things the show has ever done. From Akane’s experience and talents as an actor and Aqua’s love for Ai is born an entity that could tear Aqua’s entire worldview down. The strength of the writing in this series is sneakily always its best aspect. The way it keeps going in directions that nobody expects it to and is still just as intriguing as ever is an underrated quality and one you don’t see in as many shows.

Something that might even be a little better than the writing is the direction of Oshi no Ko. It’s like if someone wrote the entire Manga imagining them to one day be anime episodes, and thus, giving each chapter the most insane ending ever to end an anime episode as it does. Or it can just be the director of the show adapting it in a manner that makes the source material shine while making the story extremely interesting for the medium of anime as well. This was a great episode, and one that the show built up very well, only to surprise us in the end anyway.

Verdict

Oshi no Ko Episode 7 was a well-written and well-adapted outing that went into a completely unpredictable and delightful direction. The show just does that from time to time.
