The Oppenheimer cast is a delightful one and, we are here to break it all down to you. The film is written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan and, is based on the 2005 biography titled American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The book as well as the film is on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the first set of nuclear weapons on the Manhattan Project. It is produced by Syncopy Inc. and Atlas Entertainment.
The film features a lot of real-life people from the scientific community and otherwise and, we do not accept everyone to know everything about it. This is where we are stepping in to give you a quick Oppenheimer cast and character guide that you would need, before and after the film.
The Oppenheimer Cast and Character Guide to Make Watch the Nolan Film Easier
Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer: Playing the titular character in the film is Peaky Blinders’ Murphy. For the ones who are not aware, this man is the Father of Atomic Bomb and the entire film is basically a biographical drama on his life. Without giving away much of the film, we can just tell you that this man is a theatrical physicist who was the Director of the Manhattan Project and worked towards the research and development of nuclear weapons.
Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer aka Kitty: Kitty is the wife of Robert Oppenheimer and is a biologist by profession. Robert happened to be the fourth husband to Kitty.

Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence: It is no surprise that the first scene you see in the film featuring Lawrence is the one where he is probably building a cyclotron. We say this because this is the inventor of the cyclotron, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1939. The cyclotron was used during the Manhatten Project and, so were his discoveries surrounding the splitting of atoms and nuclear fission. He was at odds with Oppenheimer later on as he helped in the creation of the Hydrogen bomb, something the latter was strictly against.
Dylan Arnold as Frank Oppenheimer: Frank was Robert Oppenheimer’s brother. A particle physicist by profession, he worked on the Manhattan Project alongside his brother and made contributions to the uranium enrichment aspect. He was also a staunch member of the communist party which got him into a considerable amount of trouble such as being blacklisted and not finding a position in the scientific world for a long time.
Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr: The ‘Niels Bohr Atomic Model’ is not unknown to anyone, they keep teaching that thing for the longest time in science and rightly so because this man’s contribution has led to remarkable discoveries. A Danish physicist, Bohr worked on the Manhatten Project as a consultant under the pseudonym Nicholas Baker.
Matt Damon as Leslie Groves Jr.: A United States Army Corps of Engineers Officer, General Groves was the one who oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project alongside Oppenheimer. In fact, he was the one to get Oppenheimer in the project.
Benny Safdie as Edward Teller: The father of the ‘Hydrogen Bomb’, Teller was a theoretical physicist on the Manhattan Project. However, he advocated for the development of a hydrogen bomb instead of an atomic one.
Jason Clarke as Roger Robb: A special counsel who was appointed by Strauss during Oppenheimer’s security clearance, who used under-the-table tactful methods to strip the man of his security clearance.
Tom Conti as Albert Einstein: This name is not unknown to Nolan fans or the people, it is general knowledge that Einstein is one of the greatest minds of all time. He shared a love-hate relationship with our titular character. He did get the ball rolling for the Manhattan Project to being with when he cosigned a letter to President Roosevelt about delving into research concerning atomic energy, similar to Germany.
David Dastmalchian as William L. Borden: The man who solidified the downfall of our titular character, Borden was the staff executive director of Congress’s Joint Atomic Energy Committee that accused Oppenheimer of being an “agent of the Soviet Union” with a communist mistress and ties. He directed it all in a letter to the then-director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover that featured 21 reasons for suspecting Oppenheimer to be a Soviet spy which triggered Oppenheimer’s security hearing in 1954.
Jefferson Hall as Haakon Chevalier: A French literature at Berkeley, Chevalier shared a very strong friendship with Oppenheimer. Chevalier’s Soviet associations prompted a lot of cause of speculation for Oppenheimer during his Q clearance hearing in 1954.
David Krumholtz as Isidor Isaac Rabi: Although Rabi was not a part of the Manhattan Project, he was a great friend to Oppenheimer and shared similar views on the Hydrogen Bomb. He was present during the Trinity nuclear test and did offer consultancy on the project. He won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1944.
Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock: Jean was a psychologist with whom Robert had an intimate relationship. Although the pair had called it off after Oppenheimer married Kitty, he met Jean for one last time while he was working on the Manhattan Project and stayed at her apartment. A year later, Jean committed suicide. Her associations with the communist ideology were brought up and her relationship to Oppenheimer too in the security clearance hearing.
Gustaf Skarsgård as Hans Bethe: A nuclear physicist, Bethe lead the theoretical division of the Manhattan Project and was one of those people who designed the bomb for the Trinity nuclear test and Nagasaki. He also contributed to the development of the Hydrogen bomb although having views against its use of it. He won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1967.
Michael Angarano as Robert Serber: A physicist who participated in the Manhatten Project and was dubbed as ‘The Los Alamos Primer’.
Jack Quaid as Richard Feynman: This theoretical physicist started working on the Manhattan Project even before he graduated! Yes, Feynman was that good. He was an active part of the project and was present during Trinity, winning his Nobel in 1965.
Josh Peck as Kenneth Bainbridge: Recruited by Lawrence, Bainbridge’s work on Manhattan Project began back at MIT. When he came to work at Los Alamos, he was a part of the nuclear weapon lab called ‘Project Y’. He was responsible for overseeing the entire Trinity Nuclear Test.
Olivia Thirlby as Lilli Hornig: A staff scientist on the Manhatten Project who worked on plutonium chemistry.

Danny Deferrari as Enrico Fermi: The ‘Architect of the Atomic Bomb’, Fermi headed the F Division in the Manhattan Project. He worked on Teller’s thermonuclear “Super” bomb and was present at the Trinity test site.
Devon Bostick as Seth Neddermeyer: The co-discoverer of the muon, Neddermeyer championed the implosion-type nuclear weapon when he worked on the Manhattan Project at the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II.
Alex Wolff as Luis Walter Alvarez: During the Manhattan Project, Alvarez worked on the design of explosive lenses and the development of exploding-bridge wire detonators. He was also a member of Project Alberta and observed the Trinity nuclear test and the bombing of Hiroshima. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968.
Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss: It was Strauss, the naval officer to serve two terms on the US Atomic Energy Commission who planned the downfall of Oppenheimer. It is said that it was due to his personal grudge against the scientist (as they both shared different opinions on the Hydrogen bomb) that caused him to make sure the latter loses his Q clearance.
Louise Lombard as Ruth Tolman: A psychologist and professor, Tolman participated as the scientific advisor to Major General Groves.
Matthias Schweighöfer as Werner Heisenberg: Greatly admired by Oppenheimer, this theoretical physicist worked for the Germans. He was the Oppenheimer in Germany, oversing the atomic weapons project. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1932.
Christopher Denham as Klaus Fuchs: A theoretical physicist who was also an atomic spy responsible for serving information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union during and after World War II. On the project, Fuchs contributed significantly to theoretical calculations and also to the models of the hydrogen bomb. He faced conviction in 1950 and, resumed his career after serving nine years in prison.
Trond Fausa Aurvåg as George Kistiakowsky: A professor of physical chemistry who participated in the Manhattan Project. He was brought in as a consultant and was later put in charge of X Division which focused on the development of explosive lenses.
Harrison Gilbertson as Philip Morrison: This Physics professor worked with Kistiakowsky in the X Division. He was the one who transported the core of the Trinity test device to the site. He was also the one who helped load the atomic bombs on board the aircraft that dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Later he went to Hiroshima to assess the damage created by the Manhattan Project.
Gary Oldman as Harry S. Truman: The President of the United States of America who served term from 12 April 1945 to 20 January 1953. In regards to Oppenheimer, he is most famously known for calling the bombings on Japan and labelling Oppenheimer as a ‘crybaby’.
Macon Blair as Lloyd K. Garrison: Alongside John W. Davis, Garrison represented Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer before a panel of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1954. This hearing yielded unsuccessful results/
