Oppenheimer Facts To Have In Your Arsenal
The ‘Real’ Manhattan Project
Although the ultimate result of the Manhattan Project destroyed very many things, it started rather modestly. It was a dedicated research and development program with the goal of understanding the use of the principle of nuclear fission, the thermonuclear, or hydrogen bomb that was based upon nuclear fusion. The birth and drive behind this project were the concerns about Nazi Germany constructing and deploying atomic bombs ahead of anyone else. Thus, making the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada join hands.
The Blacklisting
A theoretical physicist of immense calibre, it sounds strange that this man of science was blacklisted but, it is true. There are two reasons and some lean on one more than the other. Oppenheimer was a member of various Communist fronts that produced doubts about his loyalty. This aided with his anti-Hydrogen bomb stance led him to be blacklisted during the 1950s Red Scare and eventually the US government revoked his security clearance and sent him into an academic exile.
However, 50 years after his death, the security clearance was reinstated. This was based on the US Department of Energy acknowledging that the hearing was, after all, unfair.
Why Los Alamos?
There is a reason why Oppenheimer picked the Los Alamos Ranch as the site for the Manhattan Project and it dates back to his childhood. The beauty and secrecy of the place were something he thought would help the team and their family members could live and be inspired to work better. When he was sick with a severe case of dysentery in high school, Oppenheimer’s parents sent him to a ranch located in New Mexico where he grew fond of the place and riding horses!
A Man of Romance
After seeing the cast and who’s who, we know this is a topic Nolan’s film is going to explore on some level but, let us be the first ones to reveal to you that this man of science was also a man of romance! Oppenheimer was involved with Jean Tatlock, a psychiatrist and physician in the 1930s. However, that did not last long and, Oppenheimer raged a minor scandal thereafter by sleeping with Katherine Puening aka Kitty, a biologist and botanist while the latter was married.
Kitty got a divorce from her then-husband, physician Richard Harrison and married Oppenheimer (her fourth husband). The two had two children- Peter and Katherine/Toni. However, during his marriage with Kitty, he rekindled his romance with Tatlock until the latter committed suicide after suffering from depression over a long period of time, leaving Oppenheimer deeply grieved.

The Bhagavad Gita
Science was not the only field Oppenheimer was interested. He held a deep regard for Hindu texts and, even learned Sanskrit. When he eventually read The Bhagavad Gita in its original language, he noted it to be the book that shaped his philosophy on life the most. Although he was never moved by Hinduism to take it up as a religion, the metaphysics in Hindu mythology really piqued his interest.
The Nobel Prize Puzzle
With all the contributions that he has made in the world of science, one might assume that Robert Oppenheimer is somebody who has won the Nobel Prize. Sadly, even after being nominated for the Nobel Prize for physics four times (according to The Nobel Prize Org website)- 1946, 1951, 1955 and 1967, he never won.
The film will release on July 21, 2023. The tickets are live now, so get yours quickly!
