On the Street 1st Win: J-Hope’s Collaboration With J Cole Tops at Mnet’s M Countdown

J-Hope has been making strides in the musical community, recently releasing his documentary titled J-Hope in the Box and the new album titled Jack in the Box, this achievement for On the Street 1st win is an indication that he has been doing something fantastic.

J-Hope has been releasing solo music in the form of singles for a while now, and last year in July, he released his first solo album. This year’s first single was a collaboration with J Cole and the song is an exploration of his roots as a street dancer and how his fans have supported him on his come up. The Mnet, M Countdown is a Korean Chart show that starts its pre-votes from Saturday at 12:00 AM to Monday at 11:59 PM KST.

The show takes place every Thursday at 6:00 PM KST. In this week’s countdown, audiences voted for On the Street which won against countless other releases and also beat Teddy Bear by STAYC. They were the last two left in the running but J-Hope’s single scored a win against a very popular girl group band. As mentioned above, this song is a love letter to the fans who have supported him since the beginning. They have been the reason he does so many things. While J-Hope always tries to emulate this sentiment in his music, this time it was a lot clearer.

BIGHIT shared that J-Hope wrote this song, speaking about his feelings candidly with the fans. He wants this song to showcase his roots in street dancing and how fans have continuously supported him in his trajectory to become an artist and the path ahead for him. This is also an aspirational track that shares the hope that his fans will continue to work and stay together. Additionally, the artist mentions that this song is meant to be a meaningful gift for his fans.

What makes this win even more special is the fact that J Cole was his muse for this music video and this song. The rapper was even featured in his acclaimed documentary. This whole project was a passion project culminating in something fruitful, especially with the win of such a competitive award. A win like this indicates how fans are really excited to follow any direction J-Hope takes with his music and even if he continues to work on passion projects like this one, they are ready to support his endeavours.

The artist also recently shared that he will be taking his band member Jin’s path and joining South Korea’s mandatory military enlistment. This news came as quite a shock to many of his fans who were expecting some more music from him this year. J-Hope had released multiple music videos and tracks for his solo album. The tracklist included Intro, Pandora’s Box, MORE, STOP, = (Equal Sign), Music Box: Reflection, What If…, Safety Zone, Future and Arson. There have been music videos for MORE and Arson, both of which have explored a different side of him as an artist.

While that was a darker turn for the K-Pop artist, this music video looks into the wholesome aspects of achieving your dreams and using New York City as a background was the perfect place to do it. Ranging from the outfits to the lyrics and even the kind of body language they bring to this music video, it is all remnant of the fact that there is confidence but grace in this achievement, in this position of cultural influence that they both occupy. After doing such fantastic work for BTS, this is a great step ahead for the artist in his upcoming solo projects.
