NCT 127 ‘Blingy’ MV Review: NCT 127 Is Back With The 7th Album

NCT 127 ‘Blingy’ MV Review: There are K-pop comebacks that arrive politely, there are some that knock on the door, and then there is NCT 127, who probably looked at the concept of comeback and decided the only reasonable option was to speed into it fully.

“Blingy”, the title track of NCT 127’s 7th album, feels exactly like the kind of comeback the group has spent training for. There are heavy beats, distorted synths, a chorus that sounds like it wants to punch through speakers, racing sequences, flashy styling and members walking around like they personally invented “swagger”.

The confidence and the swag are the whole point.

The first thing that absolutely hits about ‘Blingy’ is the momentum. The MV does not really ease you into its world. It throws you into it: the racing imagery becomes a natural extension of the song itself. Everything is moving, everything is loud, and everything feels like it is one second away from losing control completely.

The racing sequences are probably the easiest visual shorthand for what ‘Blingy’ is trying to communicate. The song is confident with an upward momentum and that almost obnoxious but entertaining belief that you are simply built to stand out.

The cars and speed make that metaphor almost obvious, but somehow the group makes it work because subtlety has never exactly been an NCT 127 thing, it seems.

The Neo Energy Is Alive

What I particularly like about the video is that it does not feel as though NCT 127 is desperately trying to recreate one of the older eras. There are little reminders of the group’s history, but ‘Blingy’ feels more like an acknowledgement of what NCT 127 already knows how to do perfectly, which is to look cool while doing something creatively funny.

The group has spent a decade making maximalism part of its identity and ‘Blingy’ in no way apologises for that but rather, it doubles down. The performance section is where the song becomes really alive.

The choreography has that familiar NCT 127 kind of sharpness, but the camera work gives it enough room to breathe. There is a deliberate contrast between the relentless energy of the track and moments where the members simply hold the frame with their expressions. The contrast is important.

If everyone goes on screaming for attention at the same time, nobody really gets it and ‘Blingy’ understands that well. It spaces out the full performance mode and lets the member simply stand and look impressive.

The Styling Gets The Assignment Perfectly

The styling is another major part of the MV’s personality. There is a slightly futuristic, a little street and a bit of “we have somewhere extremely important to be at, but we would do that ‘blingy’ way” energy attached, which fits.

More importantly, the styling does not overpower the members. With a group like NCT 127, there is always a danger of the concept becoming the main character. The clothes, sets and vehicles here work more like extensions of the personalities of the members.

When the five of them get together in the shots, the visual chemistry immediately becomes obvious. This is interesting because ‘Blingy’ marks a different chapter for the group: Doyoung and Jungwoo are currently serving their mandatory military enlistment, making this a five-member comeback.

There is an unavoidable feeling of transition of the era and even a vacuum, but the MV does not dwell on what is missing. It rather makes a confident statement about what is still there.

The Song Is Loud In The Best Way

Musically, ‘Blingy’ does not attempt to be everyone’s cup of tea. The title track combines distorted synth sounds, heavy drums and elements of rage. The result is an aggressive, electronic and deliberately over-the-top song.

The production has the slightly abrasive quality that NCT 127 has long been wearing. There are moments where the track feels almost very busy, but that is also where its personality comes from. Strip away the noise, and you would probably lose half the reason ‘Blingy’ works. This is music designed to be performed, and the MV knows it well.

The choreography, editing and instrumental all seem to be chasing the same momentum, and the song wants to keep moving forward, and the video refuses to put the brakes on.

The Real Charm

‘Blingy’, I feel, feels sure of itself. NCT 127 has reached the point in its career where it does not need to prove that it can be weird or that its music can be loud, or it does not need to explain its distinctive thing, “neo”, anymore.

There is something oddly satisfying to watch a group that has been around for ten years still learn so unapologetically into the identity that made people fall for them in the first place. ‘Blingy’ feels like a celebration of the confidence, and, fittingly, NCT 127’s 7th album arrives during the group’s 10th anniversary year.

It is neither subtle nor is it trying to be.

Final verdict

‘Blingy’ is NCT 127 doing what NCT 127 does best, which is taking a perfectly normal idea, adding more attitude, putting everyone in extremely good clothes, throwing some vehicles into the equation and then blasting the whole thing through a wall of distorted synths.

The MV is glossy but not sterile; chaotic without losing its visual direction; and confident without becoming unbearable. It feels very NCT 127, and after ten years, that is perhaps the biggest flex of all.
