My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 16 Review- The Super Hellish Todoroki Family

Predictability is an awkward topic amongst the fans of any media property, for it has pros and cons, like everything else. Still, the pros almost feel counterintuitive in a sense to the story. It is a sign of a story that has been well written and built to the point that the next step is pretty obvious in hindsight. However, that also leads to fewer genuine surprises coming along the way. The entirety of this particular arc for My Hero Academia could be seen coming a mile away, but that does not make it a bad arc in any way. This dread could have been foreseen, but that doesn’t make it ineffective.

My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 16 might have been titled “The Hellish Todoroki Family Part 2”, but it was more about Hawks and his relationship with Endeavor rather than the Todoroki family itself. That particular story has been teased and built up for a while and was told very effectively in the time that it got in this episode. The parallels between Hawks’ dad and his treatment of his son and Hawks’ inspiration being Endeavor with his shady past were very well drawn, and this is brilliant storytelling. Horikoshi writes parallels very well, and this is just another shining example of that.

The world of My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 16 is just like the #1 Hero it has right now. It is shady and somewhat untrustworthy, but with tremendous potential to improve if everything comes together just right. The state of the world has always revolved around who the #1 Hero is, as the fall of All Might also leads to the dark times we are currently going through. From the overall prosperity and happiness when All Might was around as a symbol of peace to the general untrustworthiness of Endeavor doesn’t feel like that big of a leap, even though it is one.

What’s going to be interesting to see from now on is the role Deku plays in all this. He is the only one whose future is uncertain at this point, even though the opening and ending themes promise something extremely different from him than what we’ve seen so far. Speaking of opening and ending, Eve was an inspired choice to provide the opening for this arc, and he did a fantastic job, as usual. The ending is also fantastic, but that’s par for the course for the series.

My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 16 was the first part of a duology about the Todoroki family. The next episode will be where these issues are finally decided one way or the other. The plot has been developing since the second season, and it’s fitting that it comes to an end in perhaps the best season of the show since that one. The future is extremely uncertain, and unlike what’s happening right now, it is hard to imagine where we go from here. Hopefully, to only nicer places, but that doesn’t look likely for now.
Verdict
My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 16 was a dark and interesting look at a society gone wrong. The unpredictability of the current times has led to a series that everyone can look forward to every week.
