Mumbai Diaries Season 2 Review

The first season of Mumbai Diaries introduced us to the Bombay General Hospital, its staff, their family members and more set against the backdrop of the 26/11 attack. It highlighted the valour and the sacrifices made by the first responders during the crisis and how the event ended up shaping their lives. With certain ups and downs, the previous season did a good job. In the second season, we follow the same characters (with some new ones) being introduced to another crisis to tackle. This time it is the representation of the horrifying 2005 flooding of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region that paralysed the city.

Mumbai Diaries Season 2 starts with the aftermath of 26/11; we meet all our characters 6 months later (although it represents the 2005 floods, we assume that we are somewhere in 2009 given the 26/11 happened in 2008). Bombay General Hospital’s Head of Trauma Surgery, Dr. Kaushik Oberoi’s life is not as glorious as it used to be. He is facing charges of negligence during the treatment of the police officer who lost his life during the 26/11 attack, and his career is at a standstill. Although his personal life- the relationship he shares with his wife has drastically improved.

The first-year residents- Sujata, Diya and Ahaan are in their second year now, and there are new residents on the premises. But with Dr. Oberoi’s career at stake, he isn’t there to guide them. Meanwhile, the hospital’s reputation is also at stake with the ongoing court case. In short, the atmosphere at BGH has changed from what it used to be. The energy is palpable. What remains the same is, of course, a crisis that shakes the city and puts the hospital and its staff on their toes.

As the series progresses and the various events in the life of all the characters unfold, the Mumbai Floods 26th July calamity hits everyone. How the lives of the first responders change yet again due to this is what lies at the core of this season of the show.

Mumbai Diaries Season 2 does what Season 1 failed to put forward: a true representation of the catastrophe, the aggression, frustration and struggle of the individuals involved and the one light of hope for tomorrow that keeps a person going. It takes its time to keep us invested and exploring, but also gives us fast-paced moments that truly represent the urgency of the situation. It never shies away from being congruent and on point in regard to the message it is trying to deliver and the themes it dives into.

With tears, smiles, humour and seriousness, the show gives us various perspectives and points without coming across as preachy, something that has become a common occurrence in the world of cinema nowadays. It takes accountability with the pinch of salt necessary as it hands us over a story that is filled with the complexities of emotions, interpersonal learning and more.

Mumbai Diaries Season 2 Review: The Brilliance of the Cast

One thing about this show is certain that the casting is absolutely genius. Mohit Raina returns with the kind of tenderness and pain that is so unique to him that it will make you root for him even more. Dr. Oberoi is a changed man now, and Raina leaves no stone unturned to show us that. Konkana Sen Sharma’s Chitra Das gets more priority in this season, with her backstory finally being revealed to us. And we have none other than the talented Parambrata Chattopadhyay to aid it.

Natasha Bhardwaj, Satyajeet Dubey and Mrunmayee Deshpande have clearly refined their skills as they, too, offer us the space where they can hold our attention and feelings. Balaji Gauri as Cherrian has been the most solid cast member and a favourite this season for her range to juggle humility and compassion with authority and strictness. The same goes for the excellent Prakash Belawadi.

In hindsight, Shreya Dhanwanthary’s Mansi felt a little unexplored as a character in this season, given the huge impact she had on us and the show in the previous one. The addition of actors like Ridhi Dogra, Jhanvi Rawat and others expanded the show’s compass but, were never truly granted the screen time required to know them as individuals.

Mumbai Diaries Season 2: Final Verdict

From the moment the series starts with its blue and grey colour palette until it ends with a kind of unity that keeps the human race thriving, there was never one dull moment in Mumbai Diaries Season 2. The little moments of joy as well as the anxiety-inducing moments of crisis, everything just fit together like puzzle pieces giving us a balanced flavour of all things one would expect from a good drama.
