Mrs Davis Plot/Synopsis

Simone is a nun just doing her job when an AI called Mrs Davis repeatedly makes her way to the former’s place. Initially, Simone is adamant about not listening to this AI. It is scary to her that people would willingly put their lives and love in the hands of a machine that has the potential to do much harm to this world. Surprisingly, everyone in this version of the planet is happy to have an external validating device to give them advice and tell them what’s wrong.

During the cast appearance at the SXSW (South by Southwest) Festival, the creators and actors expressed that it was scarier for humanity to be completely blind to the harmful potential this singular entity could pose to the rest of the planet and the minority of the resistance is an indication of how different this world is compared to ours. But it doesn’t stop there. Mrs Davis, an algorithm identifying as a woman and using she/her pronouns, tasks Simone with finding the Holy Grail.

Her initial attempts are met with absurd contempt and confusion. However, she soon makes her way across the country and then the world to find out how they can deal with this quest. Mrs Davis makes it seem like this undertaking is of the utmost importance and singles Simone out in order to share just how unique she is in completing this quest. Everyone else seems to believe that the AI is all-knowing and all-powerful.

Mrs Davis knows that Simone is coming for her, and she wants her to, but there is another group waiting to help her out in case she cannot do this alone. She meets her former partner, Wiley, who has been leading the resistance against Mrs Davis. While the rest of the world is convinced that she only has the best interests of humans in mind, this group doesn’t believe that one bit.

They have an underground lair with all their gadgets and technological weapons required to fight the AI. There are many people in the resistance, and they are ready to help Simone reach the goal she wants. People in the resistance don’t even believe in calling the AI by a name, using Facebook as an example. In general, this show seems to take a comedy route in exploring certain pertinent questions about the role of technology in our lives and the collective denial all of us are in when it comes to our demise.

Living on a Prayer plays in the background as one of the most ironically dramatic montages plays on screen. We see Wiley warning her that since humanity has been won over to the AI’s side, she will be forced to do everything the entity asks of her because she has built some soft power in this world where she seems to be in service of humanity. This show will probably go on to become a larger conversation about what we think of when it comes to autonomy and justice, which would be an extremely interesting angle to take.
