Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 9 Review- Young Love

Not a lot of Mob Psycho can be deemed “predictable” because this is a show unlike any other airing right now. We’ve already talked about how unique this show is, so imagine my surprise when a series such as this came along with an episode that any one of its fans could write as fanfiction. There can be multiple factors leading up to this, the biggest of them being it was a simple premise and that the show had been building up to this happening for quite a while. Some would even claim that this episode wouldn’t be as good if it weren’t this predictable.

Think of it this way- being predictable does not deserve the ire it usually gets from the general public. If something is predictable, that means it follows the logical ebbs and flows of storytelling well and does not try to turn the world upside down in its efforts to tell a compelling story. The story follows the usual well-defined tropes that we all have come to love, and most of all, are coherent. This also doesn’t mean that all predictable things are naturally good. All this means is that something shouldn’t be cast aside just because it can be seen coming from afar.

Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 9 was about Mob’s crush on Tsubomi, which put him in a now-or-never situation with her moving away from the school after this year. Mob was left formulating a plan to confess his feelings to Tsubomi, but he wasn’t alone in this endeavour. Shigeo found that popularity comes at a price and that he was going to work much harder to accomplish what he started to do than previously thought. With his back against the wall, Mob turned to the relationships he had made throughout the show, which was a great way to bring all those characters back for another run.

We saw the Body Improvement Club, the Occult Club, Hanazawa, Mezato, and Ritsu come back from the recurring cast of side characters alongside the usual suspects of Reigen and Serizawa. Speaking of Serizawa, he hasn’t played a role in the series at all, despite how much he was initially featured in the trailers for the show. It seems to be pointing towards him being a permanent replacement for Mob when Mob has to inadvertently leave the show for bigger and better things.

If you’ve seen the episode, you’ll know that I’m deliberately ignoring something that happened in this episode. It is for the benefit of people who haven’t, so they can go ahead and watch the episode unspoiled if they haven’t. It was something that opened the door for a proper finale for the show because, if you didn’t hear, this is the Final Arc that we are going to get with Mob Psycho. The show has started to wind down and tell the story to end the entire experience, and you can expect it to be high stakes and satisfactory.
Verdict
Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 9 was a logical and predictable experience which spent a lot of time showcasing how far Mob has come while also noting that we still have a ways to go with Mob’s story.
