Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 8 Review- Far, Far Away

This was a surreal episode to go through. The last episode set the stage for a perfect slice-of-life new year’s special, and the latest episode delivered everything and more in that regard. Mob Psycho is extremely unique in the way it handles relationships between friends of the main cast. Despite their differences, every character in Mob Psycho strives to be a good human being and to do good in the world, which is refreshing to witness in this age of darkness. It was a delight to watch this episode, and let us discuss why.

First, let’s get the icky out of the way. Takenaka not revealing his skills to Tome before the right moment could have been way cringier than it was here. It was still uncomfortable, as a few scenes had you thinking, “this conversation wouldn’t be happening if he just reads her mind/ telepathically talks to her for a bit”. It would have taken him nothing to do that, and I’m not quite sure the way Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 8 handled it was correct, but it all turned out nicely in the end, so it’s not that big of a deal.

The camaraderie was in the air as everyone decided to do this one nice thing for Tome before the year came to a close, and it was a delight to see everyone navigate the lush green mountain in order to get to the top, even if they were hampered by their general incompetence. Reigen was a delight in this episode, but there was a missed opportunity, as more could have been done with the “telepath knows Reigen is full of crap” angle. His involvement was still appreciated, but more Reigen is always good.

Then there’s the overall weirdness of this episode, as something happened in the middle that was completely crazy but still very believable in the show’s universe. Good times were had by all as our group found themselves talking some sense into Tome and being transported somewhere they never expected to be. It was a scenario as insane as any we have seen. A memory was made by all, not just the characters in the show but the viewers alongside them in our homes.

Anybody talking about this episode would be remiss if they didn’t mention the animation in this episode. There was a great dichotomy here as Mob Psycho 100’s usual animation style stood out in front of the beautiful green backgrounds that were more traditionally animated. There was a sharp contrast that showcased just how different this show does it than the rest, which not everyone appreciates or cares for. It is great that shows can experiment with different art styles and get appreciated from all sides. This episode deserves its kudos for what it tried to do, and so does the show as a whole.
Verdict
Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 8 was a trippy and funny outing that focused on interpersonal relationships between characters and a very ONE-esque twist at the end that stole the episode entirely.
