Met Gala 2023 is knocking right around the corner and people all over the world are jumping in excitement for the fashion world’s biggest night. Annually held every year on the first Monday of May, the ball is also called the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit.
This fashion festival is essentially an annual fundraising event that is held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City and is always the talk of the town when it happens. This invite-only event is studded with renowned celebrities from various spheres of society, starting from film and television to sports and politics. It is organised by the fashion magazine Vogue.
Every year, the theme for this fashion event is something to look forward to and something that excites the attendees as well as the viewers. For Met Gala 2023, the theme is titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. It is set to honour the legendary icon of the fashion industry, Karl Lagerfeld and the artistic contributions he made in the world of fashion that changed it forever. Ahead of the red carpet being laid out, let us have a quick look at why the theme is an important and relevant one for this year’s gala.

Met Gala 2023: Honouring the Legend Karl Lagerfeld
If the name Karl Otto Lagerfeld sounds alien to you then we can understand that you have not quite been in touch with the fashion industry which puts us in the picture to help you decode this iconic figure. A German fashion designer, Lagerfeld was born in 1933 and, sadly, passed away in 2019 which was a loss that shook the whole fashion world.
Starting his early career with Chloé and Fendi (from 1954 to 1982), it was Chanel that garnered international fame as he went on to be the creative director of this French fashion house. The designer showed a deep connection with European culture and was often called the mirror of the 20th century. The fashion statements made under his name had the touch of both the future and the past, making him a person of great creativity and interest. Thus, in a world that is affected deeply by the past (think of how the pandemic changed us all here) and is hopefully moving towards a future, honouring Lagerfeld sounds like just the right move.
The dress code for the event is ‘in honour of Karl’ and, although it is difficult to know already how the this-age designers will interpret the yesteryear legend’s work, one can expect to see works from Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Balmain and Patou be represented on the carpet by the attendees.
Met Gala 2023 is scheduled for Monday, May 1, 2023. The red carpet will begin at 6:00 p.m. ET at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. The event will be live-streamed for viewers internationally. The live streams of the event will start at 6:30 p.m. ET on Vogue’s website.
