Before becoming first lady, Melania Trump had a career as a fashion model, a background that is often reflected in her public appearances. Known for her polished style, she frequently draws attention for her fashion choices during official events.
Most recently, she appeared alongside President Donald Trump as they welcomed King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands for an overnight stay at the White House. The first lady’s outfit quickly became a focal point.
Melania Trump wore a white dress featuring black detailing on the front, paired with black heels. While many observers praised her choice of dress, some social media users compared it unfavorably to Queen Máxima’s outfit, suggesting the Dutch royal’s look stood out more.
Regardless of the mixed reactions, Melania Trump’s dress is a high-priced garment from the brand ERDEM. According to the brand’s official website, designer Erdem Moralıoğlu collaborated with British painter Kaye Donachie on his Fall 2025 collection, incorporating artistic elements inspired by ink drawings. The dress is made from cloqué and appliquéd with organza ribbons arranged in a floral pattern.
The dress was originally listed at $5,145 on Net-a-Porter but is currently discounted by 60%, bringing the price down to $2,058. While many users on X praised the outfit, one commenter noted that the first lady “doesn’t clutter her look with bracelets and excessive jewelry,” describing the style as “impeccable simplicity.”
Others were less impressed. One user wrote, “That’s an unfortunate dress choice. It looks like cowhide,” while another added, “I prefer the Queen’s dress.” A separate user highlighted details of Queen Máxima’s outfit, noting that she wore an orange dress by Dutch designer Claes Iversen, with jewelry referencing Dutch royal traditions.
Beyond fashion, the visit carries diplomatic significance, coming amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. It also follows repeated criticism from Trump regarding NATO and his calls for increased support from European allies, as well as past remarks about taking control of Greenland—an idea that drew criticism from European leaders.
The visit has sparked debate in the Netherlands, though the Royal House of the Netherlands emphasized the importance of the relationship. In a statement, it said the transatlantic ties between the United States and the Netherlands remain vital for security and prosperity.
As geopolitical tensions continue, the outcome of the meeting between Trump and the Dutch royals remains uncertain.
