Saturday Night Live (SNL) got a gift last week from Melania Trump herself. On Thursday, the First Lady held a press conference at the White House to announce that she had never met Jeffrey Epstein. Except nobody even was asking if she had, so SNL took the opportunity.
The show’s cold open on April 11 had Ashley Padilla’s Karoline Leavitt preparing a social media post for Trump in which he would threaten to annihilate Iranian civilization. Then, James Austin Johnson’s version of Trump calls Kenan Thompson’s Tiger Woods for a riff on his DUI.
Finally, Trump’s phone rings, and it is an unknown number. He picks up to find Chloe Fineman’s Melania on the other side!
“You’re calling me? That’s not a good sign,” Johnson’s Trump says. Fineman’s Melania explains she wants to hold a press conference at the White House to deny any connection to Epstein. Trump’s response: “Uh, darling, I gotta admit, this sounds a little insane. Who are you? Me?”
The real Melania’s statement was delivered on Thursday without taking a single press question. She denied being Epstein’s victim or that he introduced her to Donald Trump or visiting his island or being on his plane. She also denied any meaningful connection to Ghislaine Maxwell and explained that the email she sent Maxwell was “casual correspondence” and a “trivial note.”
For context, that email reportedly begins with “Dear G!” and ends with a “Love, Melania.” It was sent the same month a New York Magazine article ran in which Donald Trump called Epstein “a terrific guy.”
The timing of Melania’s statement has baffled most people. The Epstein story had now faded from the news cycle after being overtaken by the Iran war and domestic issues like oil prices and the government shutdown. President Trump also told a reporter he didn’t “know anything about” his wife’s statement. However, a spokesperson later clarified the West Wing had been informed she was making one, even if they didn’t know what she planned to say.
On SNL, Fineman’s Melania suggested she could also deny involvement with the Gilgo Beach serial killer, as it would make her look less suspicious. “Darling, I think that’s gonna make everyone way more suspicious,” Johnson’s Trump replied.
The sketch then moved on to Colin Jost’s Pete Hegseth, whose ringtone is “All-Star” by Smash Mouth. He assures Trump that Iran is “obliterated,” after which JD Vance’s Iranian negotiators beg for airstrikes rather than sit through another conversation with the 79-year-old president. But the Melania segment landed harder as her real statement gave the writers so little work to do.
At the end of her speech, Melania called for Congress to hold public hearings where Epstein’s survivors could testify under oath. She also urged that their accounts be entered into the permanent congressional record. But will it get traction with the White House or SNL?
