MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 4 Review: Immunity Challenges and Survival of the Tastiest

MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 4 Review: After anticipating for months, the show premiered its fifteenth season with wonderful home cooks ready to win the grand title. On the judge’s panel, we have the previous season’s professional chefs, Andy Allen, Melissa Leong, and late Jock Zonfrillo, back on the set to taste and deliver excellent critics. Surprisingly, it doesn’t stop with them because other professionals like Jamie Oliver will also be making cameos to test the contestants with their best.

The participating contestants are Adi Nevgi, Alice Han, Amy Tanner, Andrea Puglisi, Antonio Cruz Vaamonde, Brent Draper, Cath Collins, Declan Cleary, Grace Jupp, Jessica Perri, Larissa Sewell, Malissa Fedele, Phil Conway, Ralph Kahango, Rhiannon Anderson, Robbie Cooper, Rue Mupedzi and Theo Loizou.

Continuing from the last episode, we see the contestants Cath, Malissa, Anotonio, and Jessica try out for the Immunity challenge. As Jamie Oliver explains, the four of them will have the opportunity to compete against each other in an attempt to save themselves from the elimination happening on Sunday. However, the twist here is that they can only take ingredients from Chef Shannon Bennett’s fridge. As soon as the clock is started, the four of them sprint towards the refrigerator.

We are already given a glimpse into the dynamic of this challenge the moment it begins. Malissa, Jessica and Antonio grab their ingredients immediately, but the moment Cath has an idea, the other contestants snatch up ingredients from the fridge. Ultimately, she is left scrambling for ingredients and even wastes 15 minutes out of the bare 45 she was given to make this dish. This challenge was quite interesting because we could see what kind of food Shannon Bennett could make and the tastes he has been currently experimenting with.

Everyone has gotten an idea of what they would be cooking. Jessica, with the fettuccine, Antonio with a maple syrup custard tart, Malissa with her date and fig cake along with ginger caramel and some cream and finally, Cath, who decided after much deliberation that she would be making Miso Roasted Mushroom. The tension is already incredibly high with the dishes. Everyone has chosen something ambitious, and it is keeping the audience on their toes. There is a lot of running around, and although the progress is shown very clearly, there is always this element of whether it will happen or not that keeps it fresh.

Additionally, the rest of the episode, when Hugh Allen comes in, has an even more interesting take because Malissa wins the first round and progresses to the immunity pin round, where she can choose the pantry the two of them will be cooking. Facing off against a pro chef is unfair on the highest account, but the advantages given to the contestant in the show are great to keep a level playing field. Since Malissa’s cake idea took off, this time, she decided to experiment with the potent flavours and made a linguini with prawns and mushrooms.

The caviar on top resonated with the chefs, but they were more smitten with the parfait and the flavour combinations from that. It is later revealed to the judges that the linguini was Malissa and the parfait was Three Hat Chef Hugh Allen. While Malissa lost out on the chance to win an immunity badge, she could still get with an internationally acclaimed chef.

MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 4 Review: Final Thoughts

This episode was incredibly entertaining to watch because we got to see a small number of contestants go head-to-head with each other. There is always this element of urgency when there are a few people. The rest of the time, it feels like we gloss over a lot of contestants and only focus on a few anyways. This premise gives attention to detail and angst on the appropriate level.

There isn’t much drama in this episode. The brand of humour from the contestants and the chef is both welcome and valid, given how stressful the rest of the episode has been. It is always interesting to see what non-participants think of the events unfolding in front of them, so the air time they get is also a brilliant way to inject a third-person perspective. So far, it has been interesting, intriguing and civil among all the members of the competitive reality TV show.
