MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 16 Review: New Week’s Theme Doesn’t Work Well For Some

MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 16 Review: After anticipating for months, the show premiered its fifteenth season with wonderful home cooks ready to win the grand title. On the judge’s panel, we have the previous season’s professional chefs, Andy Allen, Melissa Leong, and late Jock Zonfrillo, back on the set to taste and deliver excellent critics. Surprisingly, it doesn’t stop with them because other professionals like Jamie Oliver will also be making cameos to test the contestants with their best.

The participating contestants are Adi Nevgi, Alice Han, Amy Tanner, Andrea Puglisi, Antonio Cruz Vaamonde, Brent Draper, Cath Collins, Declan Cleary, Grace Jupp, Jessica Perri, Larissa Sewell, Malissa Fedele, Phil Conway, Ralph Kahango, Rhiannon Anderson, Robbie Cooper, Rue Mupedzi and Theo Loizou.

Now that the big week ended, the contestants came to the great kitchen, anticipating what the upcoming week’s theme will be about. As expected, all of their counters had a mystery box. The judges announced that the new week will have nostalgia-based challenges where foods must bring back or have memories attached to them.

To begin with, the contestants were given different types of cereal boxes as their mystery items. Using any one or more of these, the contestants were asked to prepare a dish, be it sweet or savoury. When the timer started, some contestants planned desserts while some decided to prepare crispy and salty food.

Cooks like Ralph, Robbie, and Malissa went ahead with roasted meat, while others planned ice cream, brownies, sponge cakes, etc. During the check, the judges shared their input and were also excited to see some contestants’ outcomes. However, quite a few contestants’ ideas didn’t sit well.

Declan planned to bake muffins with cereal filling, which made the judges question him about the moisture. Unable to answer, Declan became extremely nervous because he knew that using cereals can make the muffin hard. Nevertheless, he tried his best and prayed for luck.

On the other hand, Grace’s idea of making cereal out of cereals didn’t get conveyed well. Grace planned to combine two types of cereals and bake unique ones that can be enjoyed with milk. While her ideal thought was to invent a cereal, the judges didn’t seem quite confident about it.

When the presentation started, Antonio received applause for his soft eclairs pastry. After him, plenty of other contestants nailed with their dishes, for instance, Robbie, Cath, Adi, Rue, etc. Notably, Ralph’s dish also won the judges, and they all cheered for him. His pork was cooked so well that Chef Melissa just couldn’t stop biting the pieces.

Speaking of the negative remarks, as expected, Grace and Declan’s preparations failed the judges. Grace’s idea was good, but her new cereal was way too sweet since she combined two sugary cereal types. Declan’s muffins were hard and not moist. Along with the two, Malissa and Alice’s preparations also didn’t play well.

The judges announced that Declan, Grace, and Alice will be taking part in the pressure test, where one of them will be eliminated. The best dishes of the day were Ralph’s and Antonio’s.

MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 16 Review: Final Thoughts

I sort of felt that Declan will come to the pressure test because he won the immunity pin. Obviously, he won’t be escaping for too long, so him going to the pressure test was predictable (did the crew plan this out?). Even if he gets eliminated tomorrow, he can use his pin but isn’t this what the other contestants lowkey want too? It’s got to be used somehow so he can be defeated soon.

Did the crew plan this out, though? Because Larissa came back and was hardly there before getting eliminated. Isn’t that pressing the fact that if one contestant is out, they are out even if they’re back in? Similarly, now that Declan’s got the immunity, is the crew planning not to let him lose? Honestly, if in tomorrow’s pressure, he gets eliminated, and if he uses the pin, I can’t convince myself that the show isn’t scripted.
