MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 3 Recap: The Food Pyramid Challenge

MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 3 is called the ‘Food Pyramid Invention Test’. The Fans and Favourites groups that won the previous challenge will be a part of the new challenge. Judges Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo, inform the contestants that 3 people with the best dishes will be a part of the immunity challenge next. In the Food Pyramid Challenge, each contestant from each group has to select the layers and cook using what’s available there.

The bottom layer consists of fruits and vegetables; the second layer has nuts, grains and seeds. The third layer consists of meat, eggs, dairy, etc. The top layer has butter, sugar, sweets, etc. The contestants have to decide among themselves who gets which layer. One person from each group has to use the entire pyramid. One contestant will get the bottom three layers, someone will get the bottom two layers, and one of them will get only the last layer.

Montana, Michael, and Max are the contestants cooking only with the bottom layer. The bottom two layers contestants are Keymav, Tommy and Harry. Melanie, Julie and Jenn will do the cooking with the three layers of the Food Pyramid. The cooks who get the entire pyramid are Steph, Sashi and Chris. The people who chose the same layers from each group compete with each other. The cooks have 75 minutes, and the best dish from each group will help its maker enter the immunity challenge.

As soon as the cooking time starts in MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 3, tension starts building in the kitchen. Chris is worried as he is up against Sashi, who also has access to the entire Food Pyramid. Yet again, Julie is nervous about competing with the Fans, aka the young contestants on the cooking show. As she has access only to the bottom 3 layers, she has to make butter from scratch. At one point, Julie even starts doubting her dish.

Chris is making a South Asian fish dish and is in trouble as there’s no soya sauce available. Only white soya sauce is available, which has quite a pungent taste. So the already nervous Chris does anything he can to balance the taste of the soya sauce for his dish. Like Julie, Michael from the Favourites group says he doesn’t want to go home in Sunday’s elimination. He knows what it feels like to leave the competition and doesn’t want to be the first one to go home.

Steph decides to bake a cake, but she’s worried as there are only 75 minutes. She speeds up to ensure that the judges enjoy her chocolate-peanut butter cake. Sadly, when she sets the layers of her cake, they fall off. Steph has very little time to fix her cake. Each contestant wants to give their best to avoid Sunday’s elimination.

After 75 minutes, it’s time to taste food in MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 3. Judges Andy, Melissa and Jock love the food by Julie, Michael, Tommy, Steph, Sashi, Chris, Jenn, Harry, Melanie, and Montana. The contestants who served the best dish and got a chance to enter the immunity challenge to save themselves from the Sunday elimination are Montana, Harry, Julie and Chris. Montana’s dish is Dates stuffed in shallots with Parsnip Puree. Culin’s dish is Steamed snapper with ginger and spring onion oil. Julie made Cauliflower soup, and Harry’s dish was Strawberry and Tomato Salad with coriander granita.

MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 3’s Food Pyramid challenge was quite challenging. Some contestants had to use the limited food options in their layers and serve the best dishes to the judges. However, Julie’s underconfidence is getting repetitive already. Someone should remind Julie that she is already a winner and keep cooking in the best way possible.

MasterChef Australia Season 14: What’s next?

In the next episode, Julie, Harry, Montana and Chris will be cooking for the immunity from Sunday’s elimination. The person with the best dish will be saved from being a part of Sunday’s elimination.
