Mashle Episode 11 Review: Magic And Disappointment

Mashle Episode 11 wasn’t the show’s final episode, but I wish it was so I wouldn’t have to go through with this again. Let’s witness the crimes of this show once again in this review!

Mash Doll

So far, the only highlights of Mashle, and I really mean the only highlights since this show hasn’t had many, have been the times when Mash has gone all out to destroy some bully or another as they were harassing his friends. The show is good at these moments, and they aren’t hard to root for. Just put a bad guy in front of Mash and let him do all the work; it is an easy formula. So easy that the show couldn’t possibly mess this up. Especially right before the battle it had built up to the most?

Don’t get me wrong, the battle between Abel and Mash wasn’t the worst part of the show, far from it. It was engaging at parts and ended in a manner not far from how you would expect it to end. However, the show somehow found a way to make this battle boring, which is the greatest crime one can commit in a story such as this. Things are allowed to be good, or they can be so bad that they become god ironically. However, Mashle’s entire existence, and specifically this episode, was the definition of mediocrity.

The two of them talked for ages about the differences in their ideologies, and the conversation went nowhere. Talks like these are commonplace in anime, but the good shows usually know how to write and frame them in a way that makes it feel like they are adding more context to the fight and making the emotional base stronger, making the blows have that much more of an impact. Here, the characters discussed nothing that they hadn’t already talked about, and obviously, there was no possibility of either of them changing their minds, so the talks felt mindless.

The fight also wasn’t much of a fight. The lack of subtlety and the predictability have been detrimental to the show’s quality of writing from the start, and they were painfully obvious here as much as they have ever been. Even still, those could have been overlooked had the beatdown of Abel been satisfying to watch. It wasn’t, and suddenly, the most fun thing in the show became not very fun at all. It didn’t even end as a complete wash or with one side establishing dominance over the other. In fact, it ended in the worst way it could possibly have, with respect.

The show then tried to salvage this episode by introducing another bad guy for Mash to take down in this series, and at this point, one has to start wondering if there ever was a point to all this. If the fight against the current lead antagonist was a farce just to lead up to a fight against somebody we have never even seen before, what were all these episodes previously even about? Mashle Episode 11 ideally should have been the end of the series, but we are too far gone now to assume anything satisfactory can ever be expected from this. At least it was a little funny?

Verdict

Mashle Episode 11 felt like a waste of time. The fight was extremely predictable, didn’t lead to a satisfying ending, and now we already have another target in mind that is somehow less interesting than this.
