Make My Day Ending Explained: Did Jim and Other Inhabitants Survive?

Make My Day is the latest anime series that premiered on Netflix on February 2, 2023. The show is created by Yasuo Ohtagaki, a popular sci-fi manga creator who previously produced Moonlight Mile and Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. Makoto Honda directs the series, and Taiwanese 3D CG studio 5 Inc. will provide character designs and animation. Kensuke Ushio gives the music.

The cast includes Masaomi Yamahashi as Jin, Ayahi Takagaki as Marie, Kazuhiro Yamaji as Walter, Akio Ohtsuka as Commander Bank, Atsuko Tanaka as Cathy Besk, Bill Rogers as Prof. William Boyd, Ryan Colt Levy as Robert Howard, Sarah Anne Williams as Sarah and more. The show contains eight episodes with a runtime of approximately twenty-five minutes each.

The official Netflix description of the show states the following:

ON AN ISOLATED ICY PLANET PROMISING A BRIGHT FUTURE, PRISONERS ARE FORCED TO EXCAVATE A RARE ENERGY SOURCE THAT LEADS TO A DEADLY, UNWELCOME DISCOVERY.

The last ship to leave the planet was scheduled at midnight, and Jim and the other inhabitants worked rigorously on their plan to ensure their survival. As they were waiting for the rescue teams to arrive, some unusual activity was caught on the cameras. A ship had made an emergency landing, and the guards examined the site.

Upon reaching the area, they discovered it was Commander Bark and an unknown woman accompanying him. They identified the female as Cathy Beck, who made every announcement on screen at the White Prison. Apparently, the ship was attacked by the Swarms that the ship was carrying along with the survivors, and they suspect that the Sig woke them up.

Devastation and hopelessness were bestowed upon them when they found out no help was coming. But Cathy revealed that she had informed facilities on the nearest star system about the situation and help would arrive within 24 hours.

Was their plan successful?

The team planned to collect the Sigs from the ships and store them in one area. This would attract the Swarm, which will help them destroy most of it. As the creatures woke up, a huge hoard started to travel towards them. With the help of lasers and bombs, they could kill off most of them, but it still was not enough.

What happened to Marie?

The radio signal from Marie was lost during the fight, and Jim rushed to check out the situation. He discovered that Dr Howard had captured her, and he planned to escape alone on the ship. He programmed the bots to kill every civilian, and they attacked Jim and Marie. Marie tries to bring Casper back to his consciousness and, after much effort, succeeds. As the robots fight, a Swarm enters the facility and attacks Howard. Jim takes the opportunity to disarm the scientist, and the situation stabilizes.

Did everyone escape Coldfoot?

As the Swarm were distracted by the Sigs, the rest of the inhabitants rushed towards the ship. However, the planet was destroyed by the creature’s self-destructive gas. Moreover, large tentacles buried inside the ground also appeared, but the ship flew away at the right time. Jim and everyone else sighed in relief as the ship flew them out of the nebula cloud.

Later in the ship, Walter is asked to become the godfather of Jim’s child, but he refuses as he does not want the beacon of hope to associate with a criminal. But the parents assured him that he helped to save countless lives, which made him a hero rather than a villain. Walter named the child Kou which means happiness in Japanese.
