Maestro in Blue Review

For the first couple of episodes, you will find yourself amidst the scenic beauty of the place (which might give you a travel complex), but for the most part, it will end up becoming a genuinely boring and lacklustre show.

One of the main issues with the series is its difficult pacing. The story moves slowly and fails to keep us engaged throughout its runtime. The buildup is sluggish and predictable, and the tension never reaches a fulfilling climax. The shady scandal, which is supposed to be the central theme of the series, is not given enough attention or importance. And merely acts as a continuation of the cliffhanger.

The characters in the series are conventional and generic and fail to create any real emotions from their side. Even Orestes, who is played convincingly, lacks any real depth or complexity. His character is a cliche of a passionate artist with a suspenseful past. The woman he falls in love with, Klelia, whose character is thoroughly underdeveloped, lacks any real personality or motives. Their slow-burning relationship feels forced and unconvincing, which makes the entire subplot fall flat.

The island setting, which should have been a source of intrigue and excitement, is not utilized to its full potential. The series fails to capture the unique beauty and isolation of the island. Instead, the island feels like any other generic location, with no real character or personality. The supporting cast, particularly the islanders, are not given enough importance or screen time. Their stories are underdeveloped, and their characters lack depth and complexity.

The series also fails to tackle its themes in a meaningful way. The conservative themes are never explored in any depth. And are only passed through dialogues and repetitive scenes. The impact of the pandemic is only touched upon briefly and fails to resonate with the story. The series tries to incorporate the virus as another element of seclusion but falls way too short in the attempt.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Maestro in Blue is a disappointing and boring show that fails to live up to its potential. The lacklustre pacing, generic characters, underdeveloped themes, and mediocre music make for a dull viewing experience. While the series does have some redeeming qualities (such as the stunning cinematography and island setting), it definitely makes up for a tough binge.

  1. “The shady scandal, which is supposed to be the central theme of the series, is not given enough attention or importance.”

This alone shows how much you’ve misinterpreted Christopher’s intentions for this show.

“The characters … fail to create any real emotions from their side.”

There is so much emotion, from every single character – and they are all successful in portraying it in a way that showcases a plethora of deep-rooted societal (and a few political) issues that Papakaliatis is trying to address with this series.

  2. You obviously have no idea of what expression of true emotions is.

It is in depth understood from all characters of how engaging and delivering of emotion plays in this series .
I am certain that this series will bring a success .
All in all , one can easily understand the grandeur of the cast who delivers an out blast of talent .

  3. “Characters lack depth and complexity” Such a generic and unfair statement.

Every single emotion portrayed by Klelia will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced a forbidden love. To understand Orestis’s character and the whole series , one has to be familiar with Greek culture.

The entire TV show is nothing but emotions and deep psychological portrayal of characters so brilliantly played by Christophorus, Klelia, Haris (my most favorite) and other actors.

  4. The music was such a treat. Greek composers history lesson 101 was a magical soulful treat. I binged and was not disappointed. The multifaceted nature of love between variety of hearts was intriguing. I felt as though the depth of protective mechanisms goes beyond age or sex in small communities.

  5. Do NOT agree with this review at all, binge watched the entire series and was not disappointed, loved it all and would highly recommend!! The English subtitles at times were a little weak, but understandably it’s difficult to translate the greek language in its true meaning, would rate this a 5 out of 5

  6. Great script. The direction was fantastic and the scenery of this small island was captivating. I look forward to the second season. Definitely5/5

  7. Clearly the reviewer did not watch Maestro until episode 9 which leaves me begging for this wonderful show to be continued with season 2! Loved Maestro so much I may even watch it again to savour the ‘slowness’ of this glorious Greek island…

  8. You obviously have zero perception of any of the multiple themes the story communicated nor any appreciation of the excellent acting cinematography.and underlying currents of the series. Your assessment is deeply shallow and displays a disappointing ignorance of the complexity of cultural evolution within a strictly traditional society and the emotional struggles of the characters involved depicted not only visually but poetically and musically as well. It appears that all this went entirely over your head.

  9. Do not agree with this review at all! You might have to be Greek to truly appreciate the nuances of this script! I found it to be powerfully evocative. It’s portrayal of domestic violence was masterful and captured the fear, shame, denial unbelievably well. The dichotomy between appearance and reality is also beautifully portrayed. There were so many subtexts that it is unfair to say local characters weren’t fully developed. My only gripe was the ending… Hope there’s more to come…

  10. I don’t get why this series seems unoriginal to you. Have you recently seen any show that speaks of a country’s social and financial issues in a way clearer than what the president would tell you?
I think you’re completely missing out on this one, or you’re bitter about something, because it’s as if you haven’t watched this series at all. It’s all the opposite of what you say

  11. Absolutely loved it. The plot was gently carried along and kept me guessing. Rather wished the maestro had stayed with Klelia. As a European myself I enjoyed the scenery very much. Look forward to more like this.

  12. “All in all, Maestro in Blue is a disappointing and boring show that fails to live up to its potential.”
You have completely missed the point of the series. Slow – burning yes, boring, NO.
Most likely you have not fully watched the 9 episodes –
The series is VERY VERY good in all aspects. Just take your time and watch it.
Apart from the stunning Cinematography, it is full of deep feelings and philosophy for life.

  13. I do not agree with this review. If only Netflix could offer more down to earth content like this! I watched it all in one go and I loved it. So much emotion from every actor/actress beautifully blend with drama, romance, plot nice scenery and great music. Refreshing and addictive to watch. There is going to be a part 2 too from the ending.

  14. It’s simple and clear. You are no artist, you lack emotional depth and creativity. It’s sad anyone can review these days without any credibility whatsoever. The show is fantastic.

  15. The reviewer must come from some other planet. If you are not watching the Greek version it may lack some impact im not sure, but a rediculous review . Did his person even watch it all ? maybe not !!!!!!!!!

  16. I don’t agree with this review. Everything about this show was amazing. A must watch. A modern Greek Tragedy. It will have you thinking, feeling and reminiscing……………….what else can you ask for? Don’t listen to the reviewer, watch it!

  17. I have enjoyed watching, and all the greek drama and the images of the Island and surrounding and I cannot get enough of the end, so so so beautiful, the song.

  18. We loved this show. Perhaps sometimes sluggish but kept us up until 2am. Then went back to hear the Greek language version. The acting was phenomenal and can’t wait to see next series

  19. Like most critics, you’re sad, pathetic & live failed miserable lives of pulling others down. Thank goodness people don’t take you seriously anymore.

This was a great, entertaining series with good actors & actresses.

    • I was soo disappointed when it finished.
I am disappointed with Netflix for showing it and then not knowing if it will be renewed.
      I miss the characters already.
What a lovely, lovely, drama to watch.
I sincerely hope Netflix does the right thing for its viewers and renews it for another season.

  20. I actually loved it! The cinematography is amazing, superb actors, captivating stories & emotions. I’m not too familiar with Greece or Greek culture but after watching I am intrigued!

  21. I thoroughly enjoyed this series! I don’t agree with the reviewer at all! I was entertained; loved the music; fascinating characters; good acting; depth of passion; and the bad guy got what he deserved!

  22. I loved this. the critics comments were misleading. the critic lacks passion, romance and a feeling of adventure. They must be a sad and lonely person. This was a fantastic show and I really hope we have a second season on Netflicks.
    Loved it

  23. Being Greek and not prone to taking things patriotically ,I must admit that this is a series that is truly disappointing. So much of it is so fake ,for example the doc’s emotional attachment to his dog . Secondly ,the whole premise of an entire island ,even if as small as Paxoi, could be at his neck and call is absurd . Papakaliatis has always suffered from intolerable narcissism and this manifests itself in this series too. The only redeeming features is the breathtaking island ,the wonderful music and the incomparable Haris Alexiou , Greece’s greatest chanteuse, who is a sheer revelation.

  24. this was a great series with many interesting characters. some of the comments made by other people above show there lack of human nature. I thoght that Klelia was wonderful.

  25. I am married to a Greek, have seen my share of Greek islands, have lived in Greece, love Greek music (including the great Alexiou) and was urged by Greek friends to watch this series of sorts. I managed the first three episodes, then gave up. This series is chock full with clichés, shallow dialogues and rubbish acting. It doesn‘t even propagate the beauty of Greek landscapes which would have been an extra bonus. Instead we are given a ridiculous plot with a modicum of steaminess ( how old is the gal supposed to be anyway? )
By the way did you notice how often the female characters change dresses? Every five minutes or so it seems.
Sorry but I have seen the rich and their miserable livelihoods in countless other movies and TV series. And this Maestro thing just adds one more to this list. Too bad for the excellent wine spilled and tasty homemade pitas left on doorsteps.

    • Totally agree, apart from some great scenery and cinematography the themes have all been done before, generic and lack sophistication. The American dubbed scripts is so poor and unbelievable, it feels like the desire to sound and be American is the pinnacle of quality drama, absolute crap.

  26. Clearly, you should choose another line of work. You should not be a TV critic. Shame on you. This was an excellent series.

  27. Not perfect, but holds your interest. Lots of good character development. Whoever wrote the above review needs to get a new job.

  28. This series takes you on a dramatic journey of cultural hardships and the various spheres of love. The acting is a master piece of raw and theatrical beauty that draws you into the characters lives with suspense, emotion and true conviction.

  29. Obviously not watched the same show. Superb acting, wonderful cinematography, great music, great scenery, thoughtful and well developed themes. Hoping for series 2

  30. I disagree with the author’s comments. Maestro in Blue is one of the best films I have ever watched, and I have viewed hundreds. I enjoyed the deliberate pace. The characters have been carefully crafted. The one character who seems hypocritical and whose behavior is at times contradictory is the grandmother; but I expect this was done deliberately to demonstrate irony, and in contrast with the other characters who are genuine. I certainly would not describe the plot as predictable. This film is incredibly suspenseful. Themes are hard hitting and timely. Acting well done. And I found the music to be exceptional. This film is both provocative and a joy to watch! I am eager to view Series II.

  31. Surprise surprise, one more INDIAN uptight hypocrite frustrated man unable to see emotion and sexual tension even when it’s right in front of him.

  32. Wow, you must be recently off weed or something cuz you really are dull. This series was captivating, delved into many deep themes that clearly escaped you, especially the strength, complexity and wisdom of the matriarch. The music was an amazing tapestry – and I am a musician. Get a different job, dude, cuz you suck at this one!

  33. Christoforos Papakaliatis the biggest talent on Greek television and now Netflix I’m happy that the hole world now can see his great work! I grew up with everything serie he made! I’m 23 years in the Netherlands and I kept watching his career! I can say that watching Maestro in blue the emotions are so strong and there is so much truth about life in Greece in everything that I couldn’t keep my tears !

  34. I really liked it! I don’t agree with the negative remarks. The characters were important to the series as well as the beautiful secrnery! I am looking forward to season 2. I also loved the music.

  35. This review seems to have been a past &copy from another review. It’s obvious that the so-called critic, here has either not watched fully the series or read a book while watching it. The series is wonderfully acted and directed.

  36. My wife and I enjoyed the series .The reviews were quite accurate.we Americans can always learn different cultures increase our love of life.

  37. I think that despite what others (not critics) said, probably you were one of the few who watched and analyzed what you watched at the same time.Being a student in literature department I love doing the same. Please don’t stop to tell your opinion and although the most of the comments seem to come from greek idiots don’t hate my country(i’m also greek right but without having to be so proud about it in order to be rude).Thank you.

    • Thank you for your comment 🙂 most people tend to forget that the people writing these articles are human as well who have an opinion that can differ.

I loved this serie. I have been to Greece 3 times: when single and married..
It’s romantic and tragic. Beautiful island, people..I am only disappointed because it doesn’t
show the end. I keep taking a look… Who knows, will it be shown?
    It’s not fair.
