I don’t have words good enough for this introduction to Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 12. Let’s get right to the review before we all break down.
Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 12 Overview

The best anime of 2017 and one of the greatest shows of this generation, Made in Abyss, makes a return to our screens with Made In Abyss Season 2, titled Made in Abyss Golden City of the Scorching Sun. The series is once again being helmed by veteran director Masayuki Kojima who also directed the previous seasons alongside other classic anime such as Monster and Black Bullet. The season is also referred to as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou in original Japanese.
The season is also being animated by Studio Kinema Citrus, which was behind the first season of the show alongside other shows like The Rising Of The Shield Hero. The series is based on a manga written by Akihito Tsukushi. This episode is also known as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou Episode 12 and Made in Abyss Golden Sun Episode 12. Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 12 Review- Depths Of The Abyss

And there it went, the best anime of this season and possibly the best anime of this entire year. That’s how long we got with it, and seeing as how the show has almost caught up to the manga, that is going to be the last we see it in animated form for quite a while. At least we can rest assured that the series went out like only it could- leaving behind a pile of tears, hope, redemption, and the magic of the Abyss. This episode was quintessential Made In Abyss and represented everything that has been tremendous about this entire show.

Several have criticised the show’s decision to spend an entire season in just this layer, whereas the previous season saw our protagonists descend five times as many. While I understand where this is coming from, I do not agree. This season had a vision bigger than anything that making it to the bottom already would have accomplished. It was a tale of love, of sacrifice, of revenge, and of acceptance, and it was absolutely fantastic. It started as mysterious and somewhat confusing, but everything came together so neatly by the end that you could see someone writing the end first and making a way to get there.

As is seemingly tradition for the show now, the final episode was a double-length behemoth that came to us after a one-week break from the last week’s events, where we saw the residents of Iruburu sacrificing themselves to save their queen, an action which finally showcased what Faputa’s existence was truly about. Sure, it was revenge that flamed the fire within her, but it was the connection to her mother which drove her forward. A mother who loved every resident of Iruburu despite what they had done. Iruburu helped them survive, and they helped its queen and Arumyuui’s final daughter survive. If that’s not good writing, nothing is.

The finale was slow, deliberate, epic, emotional, and conclusive- the perfect finale this season deserved. Every single major plot point got addressed in an extremely satisfying manner, something which seems like a monumental task but was somehow accomplished. The ending to Vueko and Irumyuui’s tale was one that will be remembered for ages as one of the best moments of this show and anime in general. There is so much we can’t talk about because of the spoiler warning, but let’s just say that the double-episode curse that started with Mitty is a long-lasting tradition.

There wasn’t much focus on the main trio in the finale, which it shared with the rest of the season. However, it wasn’t their story to begin with- it was something that they had stumbled upon by accident and had to fight to survive barely. Their time has come before and will come again, but this was about the Golden City, Faputa, and every member of Ganja. The production was, as always, phenomenal. Kevin Penkin put on a full greatest hits collection for our enjoyment in this episode, and it won’t be an experience any single one of us forgets very easily.
Verdict
Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 12 was perfect, like the rest of the season has been. It delivered a devastating and brilliant conclusion to a phenomenal season of anime and cemented the show’s legacy as one of the best anime of our generation.
