Things are about to get steamy as the controversial depictions of the sexual explicitness of D.H. Lawrence’s 1920s novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover is making its way to Netflix this December. Starring Emma Corrin of The Crown fame as the titular lady and Jack O’Connell as her lover in the adaptation, the intimate film has been directed by the French director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre.
Written by the author of similar themes of adultery and physical arousal in books like The Rainbow and the aforementioned title, both books by Lawrence were banned due to the vivid descriptions of sex and added to his controversial repertoire as an author. All his books, even if not banned, deal with the same level of maturity and have intrigued the public forever. Penguin helmed the publishing process of the titular book back in the 1920s in the UK, which came to be charged under the Obscene Publications Act as well. Clearly, the authorities didn’t want the readers to be accustomed to this work.

Alas, their efforts have gone down the drain since it’s now receiving a live-action adaptation, bringing those same torrid words alive on the screen. With the recent release of the film’s trailer, audiences are once again drawn into the concept while those who’ve read the novel already are appreciating Netflix’s efforts of providing period pieces other than Jane Austen’s works a platform as well.

The trailer takes quite a visual turn in portraying Lady Chatterley’s life post her marriage, having fallen out of love with her husband, she finds a new path to follow her passions in the estate’s gamekeeper – Oliver, thus invoking the jargon of class politics. Having led a life governed by wealth and opulence, the Lady has “had enough of gentlemen” and dares to live a life of unrestrained liberty. So, maybe everything isn’t enough despite what society may prevail as its judgment.

Knowing all the stakes and the brows it will raise, she’s set on achieving a kind of love that may be deemed as an extramarital affair but there’s a lot happening underneath the surface, which, not many will take the time to unpack. And as usual, Lawrence’s books always had a piece of his own autobiographical accounts fleshing out the story, just like this film’s source material. His own despondent domestic life inspired the case of his fictional character, who’s had to endure her loneliness living beside her Baronet husband Sir Clifford Chatterley, who’s dealing with his own share of trauma after the Great War.
