Koffee With Karan Season 9 Is Coming For “One Last Time”: Everything to Know About Karan Johar’s Most Talked-About Talk Show

Koffee With Karan Season 9: Karan Johar has recently announced Koffee With Karan’s new season with an emotional video. In the video, Karan Johar described how KWK started and even mentioned, “I have put an end to the careers of national icons,” adding that he is still “living with the word Nepo”.

Now, after 22 years, 161 episodes spread across 8 seasons, Karan Johar is saying goodbye to the couch. Thus, it would be one last coffee (or koffee) this time!

The announcement looks back at the rather absurd journey of a show that began with one simple idea: get celebrities together, sit them down and have an “informal/candid chat”. Nobody back then really knew how enormous the idea was going to become.

Koffee With Karan Season 9: When and Where Does It Release?

Koffee With Karan 9 will begin streaming on October 14, 2025on JioHotstar and yes, knowing the format, there will probably be coffee (or tea!), couch conversations, dramatic revelations, suspiciously specific questions and at least one moment where the internet would collectively ask, “Oh Karan! Why would you ask that?” and still enjoy.

But this time there is something different hanging over the season: IT IS THE FINAL ONE! At least, that is how Karan Johar has framed it in his emotional video.

Karan Johar Remembers The Beginning of Koffee With Karan

The announcement video is emotional because Karan Johar is not simply announcing another season but is rather looking back at the life of the show itself.

He recalled telling his father about his desire to host a talk show in June 2004, which was the same month that Yash Johar passed away. The concept was fairly straightforward: Karan Johar wanted to speak to celebrities/ stars in an informal, candid setting.

Yash Johar’s response was wonderfully practical. Karan mentioned how his father asked him who is going to pay him for talking to his friends. Honestly, imagine being told that about an idea which would eventually become one of the Indian television’s most recognisable pop-cultutre institution but back then the format sounded unfamiliar and perhaps “weird”.

On August 16, 2004, Karan Johar shot the first episode of Koffee With Karan, and 22 years later, we are still talking about it with all the enthusiasm retained.

22 Years, 161 Episodes and 8 Seasons Later…

Koffee With Karan has a rather abundant archive containing star-studded conversations across 8 seasons that built 161 episodes over its 22-year run. This is not a mere television show lifespan but an entire generation’s cultural memory.

The people who appeared on the original couch have changed; their careers have changed; Bollywood has changed; the internet has changed; the way celebrities speak publicly has also changed, and yet the basic image remains almost comically familiar. A themed room looking all luxurious with a glamorous couch; two celebrities sitting next to each other; Karan Johar leaning with the expression of a man who has just discovered a secret he absolutely intends to investigate and a cup of coffee sitting innocently at the side table.

The show has brought together friends, lovers, family members, co-stars, and the combinations that made no sense until they were sitting there together. It became a space where the personal and professional were constantly rubbing shoulders, and that was precisely the appeal. The show’s approach also changed with the changing wave on the internet.

The Show Also Created Controversies

A 22-year-old cultural institution does carry a certain accumulated emotional baggage. Karan Johar acknowledged in the emotional video that the show had, at times, even put an end to the careers of some “national icons”, while also mentioning that he continues to live with the word “nepotism”. That word has perhaps become inseparable from Karan Johar’s public identity.

Koffee With Karan has repeatedly found itself at the centre of larger conversations around Bollywood’s power structures, privilege, access, celebrity culture and the machinery of the Bollywood industry while getting itself at the centre of trolls.

The Koffee Nostalgia Is Real

There is something deeply nostalgic about Koffee With Karan that has very little to do with coffee except that the celebrities randomly sipped coffee from the cup on their side table and signed a cup at the end of the show.

The show belongs to a particular era of Indian television when celebrity culture still felt slightly more distant, when interviews were not constantly being uploaded in fragments, and when seeing two famous people casually sitting together could feel like being allowed into a room you could not otherwise enter. The earlier episodes especially carried that feeling.

Koffee With Karan Was Never Just About Gossip

This is where the show’s legacy gets more interesting because Koffee With Karan has recently become synonymous with celebrity gossip: the rapid-fire round; the dating questions; the infamous answers; awkward pauses; revelations, memes and fan theories.

However, reducing Koffee With Karan to gossip almost misses why it survived for so long: some of its older episodes, in fact, were conversations about bigger things. Episodes featuring people such as Sobha De and Shabana Azmi, among others, could move beyond the immediate celebrity ecosystem and into conversations around society, culture, gender, and even the way people are perceived. The show could be frivolous and thoughtful in the same hour.

Karan Johar Says People Ask Him About Koffee Before His Films

There is perhaps no better indicator of the show’s cultural hold than Karan Johar’s own observation that people do not necessarily ask him when his next feature film is coming, but they do want to know when KWK would.

When you remember who Karan Johar is, this becomes somewhat hilarious because he is a filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, television personality and one of the most recognisable Bollywood figures, yet Koffee With Karan became its own entity.

Koffee With Karan Season 9: One Last Time

There is a strange sweetness to welcome this season “one last time” because Koffee With Karan has been around for so long that it feels less like a television programme and more like that one friend who remained present throughout every version of your life.

You may not have watched every episode; you may have even complained about the conversations; you may have given an eye-roll to the television screen at some point, but when the announcement arrives, you click, because you remember.

There is a sense of nostalgia attached to watching KWK because you remember watching the older seasons, discussing the episodes, the outrageous answers, the funny moments, the controversies that they created, the discourses it generated and perhaps that is why Koffee With Karan Season 9 does not just feel like another season arriving, but it feels like walking into the living room and picking up a photograph captioned, “one last time!”
