Koffee With Karan Season 7 Episode 11 dropped on Disney+Hotstar on September 15, 2022, with Anil Kapoor and Varun Dhawan joining the host on the couch. The dynamic pair was recently seen together as a father-son duo in Juggjugg Jeeyo, and it’s safe to say that their “combustible” chemistry could be felt on Johar’s set as well.
Johar himself steps out into the light by starting off the evening with a short monologue highlighting his findings about himself on social media. His projection as the “deity of reproduction in Bollywood” is later carried forward into the conversation with his guests of the night too.
The official synopsis of the episode reads:
Varun Dhawan and Anil Kapoor get candid about marriage, role-playing and more. The koffee is joined by cutting chai in a crazy coup as the boys dial up the heat on and off the floor.

Recap of Koffee With Karan Season 7 Episode 11
The befitting host of Koffee With Karan Season 7 Episode 11 welcomes Anil Kapoor as his first friend in Bollywood and Varun Dhawan as “the first baby (he) kind of put into business”. In the beginning itself, the camaraderie between the two guests is established and both of them keep bouncing off each other’s energy. Kapoor praises Dhawan for his hardworking ethic on set while Dhawan seeks inspiration from the former’s “positivity towards the work”.
From there on, Johar fires up an honest discussion around marriage, infidelity, and more in the same breath as the duo’s latest and first venture together, Juggjugg Jeeyo. To answer the same, Kapoor channels his aforementioned bubbly humor initially but then later sincerely declares that he “doesn’t endorse it (infidelity)”. As a quick-witted follow-up to this, Dhawan questions the theme of infidelity raised for this chat by the host, reminding one of the director-host’s previous work, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Thereafter, the “phenomena of nepotism” and the trolling that follows it is brought in. Both the actors present their takes on it by sticking closer to their own work morals. Dhawan’s counter-response therein about the pervasive “misinterpretation of how people actually are” humanizes the perception of the host too, just as Dhawan supported him after his breakup. It’s during this conversation that Kapoor recalls that he used to feel insecure about his own standing when compared to his fellow colleague Jackie Shroff, who unlike him was an outsider in Bollywood but landed his big break early on in his career while Kapoor continued to do “bit” roles for a long period.
On being asked if Varun Dhawan ever felt insecure about the competition from his contemporary male actors as Johar lists a few of them, Dhawan outrightly claims that he rather feels “healthily competitive” with only one person, Alia Bhatt. For him, she’s not only someone with whom he shares history but also looks at her as a rising star of this era who is rather at par with one of our biggest heroes. In the same conversation, he also mentions that there were times when he doubted if he was “slipping in (his) game” when Johar didn’t call him up for his last few productions.

With that put aside, cue the marital advice the two dive into by answering phone calls. All the minimal meaningful exchanges they shared earlier are all forgotten in an instant as they’re already discussing sex, that too quite vividly with the callers. Following this comes the notable Rapid-Fire session which is won over by Dhawan who engages in a hilarious light-hearted repartee with Arjun Kapoor.
Finally, the Slam Zone is in session with the phone game, wherein the generation gap between Anil Kapoor and Varun Dhawan takes the front seat. While Dhawan is able to secure several calls with co-stars like Alia Bhatt, Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon, and Kiara Advani, Kapoor stands facing him broken-hearted since no one returned his call. Finally, he receives a consolatory call from Fatima Sana Sheikh but Dhawan had already won the round by then.
Koffee With Karan Season 7 Episode 11: Final Thoughts
More often than not, Johar’s couch is but an excuse to pick up unfiltered sex talks of the glossy Bollywood glam. This episode delves into the same crude practice but on an inflated level by introducing marital advice sessions with cutting tea. The previously initiated talk about nepotism, marriage, and infidelity could’ve easily added depth to the otherwise controversial and superficial visage of the show.
However, as soon as the marital gurus assume their stance, they’re back to the sex talks in an instant. Calling up a veteran actor like Anil Kapoor to the mix (even though he doesn’t like being referred to as a veteran actor) just to discuss sex habits is a lost opportunity. His first reaction to the query raised by the caller is also that of putting off the interaction because he can’t relay a message like that to someone he’s never met.

Kapoor’s insight into the golden years of Bollywood could’ve easily put into motion a contrasting debate on the industry that is currently tanking at the box office. However, no such profound idea is ever hinted at, rather the episode feels like a complete miss as the three stars are seen merely laughing it off.
On the other hand, Varun Dhawan, who’s picked up a witty banter with the absent actor Arjun Kapoor, which feels like an inside joke we’re missing out on, was hilarious to some extent. His peculiar enunciation of the actor’s name lingers even moments after the episode is over.
Proclaimed as the “audience pleaser” by Karan Johar, Dhawan does sport an undeniable charm at certain points. There are flashes of the star maintaining a balance between his jocular and humble side as quite a few of his responses to the earlier conversation of feeling insecure in Bollywood and so on, attempt to break down his one-dimensional perky personality. It’s moments like these that remind you of his much-grounded performances in Badlapur and October.
Finally, going back to the ‘cutting chai’ session, it failed to fit the bill and felt like an unnecessary accessory to the show. It almost feels like the guests have internalized the idiosyncratic face of Koffee With Karan, which it has taken up over the years, and so they emulate the same in their approach to the conversation as well. What could’ve been a weighty exchange dispelling endless misinterpretations surrounding the Indian movie industry, turns out to follow the same coarse trajectory, with a sprinkling of pleasant replies and comebacks from Dhawan.
