Kiss Or Die Review

In Kiss or Die, improv actors test their control as well as acting skills opposite popular adult film stars who test them at every turn. As the story goes from insane to even more insane, these actors have to give it their all to stay in character and resist the temptation that is thrown at them at every turn.

The series is… something. It’s hilariously unhinged as the weirdest of things start happening right from the onset. At first, it all feels rather confusing and sudden, but viewers will find themselves getting into the groove of the story and catching its beats. Only after that will you truly be able to enjoy the craziness that is this Japanese variety show.

It’s not every day that I find myself cackling at super sexual Netflix shows because most of them don’t truly get into their own stories. However, Kiss or Die dares to go there and then some, leaving us absolutely shocked at the audacity and cackling at the insanity. The true kudos, though, belong solely to the performers, who give their 100% and bring this crazy concept to life. I mean, who would’ve thought that a survival show based on “cheap kisses” would come with human experiments in a pharmaceutical company headed by Terajima Susumu?

But the artists make it happen and deliver such believable performances, most of which are supposedly improvised, that I couldn’t help but believe them. The kudos also belong to the adult film actresses who are somehow thirsty for a death kiss! Writing down the concept of the series feels surreal and hilarious in equal measures, and Netflix has done a great job of bringing something truly different to the platform. It’s not for everyone, but those who like their improv performances completely crazy, this one will be a good bet.

Lastly, we have the hosts here who provide their feedback to the unfolding story. We all know that this is a skit, and so the hosts’ comments are especially funny as they are left completely baffled by their friends’ and colleagues’ reactions to some of these situations. But, of course, the part that truly sells the series is the performances and the chemistry that the comedians share with the adult actors. As the improvisations get more and more complicated, it’s almost shocking to see both the men and women go off in different directions together without skipping a beat. It’s just so interesting that you can’t help but watch it all unfold.
