Killers of the Flower Moon Ending Explained

The Osage murders are what form the entirety of the movie. Although it is very apparent from the start who the murders are orchestrated by, the clear revelation points towards De Niro’s William King Hale along with his nephew- DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart. Unfortunately, or fortunately (however, you want to look at it), we have Mollie (Gladstone’s character), who is Ernest’s wife finds out about her husband’s wrongdoings.

The ending of Killers of the Flower Moon shows Mollie confronting Ernest about the murders and, how he had been secretly poisoning her. There is no room left for Ernest to defend himself then. Along with being responsible for the death of Mollie’s entire family, Ernest has no ground to stand in front of his wife, which is why the latter ends up leaving him at the end of the film.

However, that is not where the film stops, we have a true-crime radio broadcast taking over the screen to tell us the aftermath of it all. We get to know that Ernest was taken to jail and released on pardon, living the end of his days in a trailer park with his brother. The other perpetrator, William King Hale also received parole before his death. As for Mollie, she remarried but, also died quite young of diabetes.

Martin Scorsese is the radio podcast’s narrator to everyone’s surprise and continues to tell us how Mollie was buried with her family and left Ernest and the Osage murders out of her obituary because she did not want tragedy to define her life. At the end, there is a final shot showing modern-day Osage coming together with dancers all around and the camera pans out.
