Just One Look Ending Explained

The series starts with Greta, blissful in her marriage with Jacek, finding a photo of four youngsters among her vacation pictures. Since one of them seems to be her husband, she innocuously asks him about it, but he immediately seems closed off and disappears without telling his family anything. Worried and questioning his motives, Greta decides to take matters into her own hands and goes to the police after Jacek doesn’t respond to her calls.

Some background — Greta was in a concert fire during her teenage years and was one of the few people who came out alive. She has no recollection of the events before and after the tragedy. One of her old confidants is Karol Wespa, her boyfriend at the time’s father, who continues to mourn the loss of his son 15 years later. She goes to Karol to get more information about Jacek and the photo but doesn’t get too far. He, however, agrees to keep an eye on her and her children using his powers.

In the midst of this, we see a disappeared Jacek being kidnapped by Robert Bonczyk, a gun-for-hire who uses his Tinder dates to do his misdeeds. He has clearly been hired by someone and he abuses Jacek mercilessly, killing a bunch of people as he takes him to his boss. Elsewhere, Greta is approached by a prosecutor in the DA’s office, Borys Gajewicz, who seems to also be looking into this matter. It turns out that he also got the photo that Greta has and the woman beside Jacek, Alex Gajewicz, is his daughter, who mysteriously turned up dead.

Caught in half-truths, Greta starts to go through Jacek’s bank accounts and call logs and finds out that he has been in communication with a lawyer, Sandra Kowalska, and that he has a ton of money stashed away that she was never made aware of. Greta figures out that Sandra is actually Jacek’s sister and her suspicions grow further. In the midst of this, police officer Tomasz grows suspicious of Jacek’s disappearance and decides to investigate after finding out that another husband, Roman Kowalik, is also missing. Only that… Kowalik followed Jacek the night that he disappeared.

With mounting evidence that there’s something out of place, everyone starts to investigate further as Robert tries to hurt Jacek further. In the midst of this, Viktor Lewinski, the man who started the fire 15 years ago, gets out of jail, causing an uproar. Karol is unhappy about his sentencing and has a falling out with Greta, who is more than ready to move on from the tragedy. Unfortunately, the day he is let go, he is killed by unknown forces.

In the end, Greta is kidnapped by Robert but ends up getting the upper hand when she causes an accident and then shoots him in self-defence. Meanwhile, Tomasz and his colleague run into Robert at one of his hideouts as he appears to get some cash and there, Tomasz finds a badly bruised Jacek handcuffed in the cellar. In a cosmic turn of events that ended as suddenly as it began, Jacek is admitted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, Tomasz finds the name Szymon Adamiuk scratched on the wall and looks further into the issue. At home, a traumatised Greta gets a mysterious pendrive delivered to her address by Jimmy, the band vocalist who was singing the night of the fire and finds a video which includes Alex Gajewicz, Jacek, Sylwia and Szymon Adamiuk. As it turns out, Jacek is actually Szymon Adamiuk, which throws poor Greta for a loop. She immediately goes to meet Szymon’s mother, who immediately has a change of heart when she learns about Szymon’s accident. Inside, she finds pictures of her children in Mrs Adamiuk’s home and immediately interrogates her.

However, she only opens up in the hospital and tells Greta that he took on Jacek’s identity to get money and save his sick mother. It was a mistake that he couldn’t back out of eventually and he regretted it, but it was too late. Back at home, she calls Jimmy for answers. He asks her to remember what she saw that night and then tells her that he and the real Jacek got into a fistfight over a stolen song that ended in Jimmy accidentally stabbing Jacek. Greta accuses him of killing the other band members, which he vehemently denies, and he is then run over when he angrily walks outside.

Again, at home, Greta watches the video of the band that Jimmy had left behind for her and finds something curious — the reflection of a woman on the glass. The next day, when Szymon wakes up, he tells her that all of this was Sandra’s plan. She planned to get the song’s royalties but knew that if Jacek died, everything would go to their father. Since they have a terrible relationship, she came up with this scheme with Szymon to keep Jacek alive and continue to cash out the money. However, keeping everything quiet turned out to be more difficult than he expected after he sought Greta out. She had forgotten dating him and he sought her out on purpose.

Unfortunately for Greta, Szymon ends up dying just after finishing telling her the truth. Traumatised and having lost his soulmate, she first goes to meet Tomasz to tell him the truth and then meets Sandra. She confronts her with the facts of the case and although she tries to deny it, she keeps going. She tells her how she knows about manipulating everyone around her to get a ton of money from the song becoming a hit and paying everyone off. Of course, it helps that everyone who knew the truth is now dead. Sandra is quite sure that she can’t be held accountable, but Greta’s words clearly leave an impact. Well, the police think otherwise, obviously, and arrest her.

Two months later, Borys tells Greta that he was the one who planted the photo in her stack and he already knew about Jacek’s identity. He simply wanted to know the truth behind Alex’s death and created this charade. She is left angry at his words and asks him whether it was worth it to him, considering a ton of people died because of him. He, in turn, asks her whether she remembers who took the photo and as it turns out, she does — it was her.
